An elasto-dynamic model for pile-soil-pile interaction together with a simple plate model is used in this study to assess the effect of flexible foundation slabs on the dynamic response of pile groups. To this end, different pile configurations with various slab thicknessesare considered in two soil media with low and high elastic moduli. The analyses include dynamic impedances and seismic responses of pile-group foundations. The presented results indicate that the stiffness and damping of pile foundations increase with thickness of the foundation slab; however, the results approach those for rigid slab as the slab thickness approaches twice the pile diameter for the cases considered in this study. The results also reveal that pile foundations with flexible slabs may amplify the earthquake motions by as much as 10 percent in the low to intermediate frequency ranges.
In this paper the overall dynamic response of simple railway bridges subjected to high-speed trains is investigated numerically based on the mechanical models of simply supported single-span and continuous two-span Bernoulli-Euler beams. Each axle of the train, which is composed of rail cars and passenger cars, is considered as moving concentrated load. Distance, magnitude, and maximum speed of the moving loads are adjusted to real high-speed trains and to load models according to Eurocode 1. Non-dimensional characteristic parameters of the train-bridge interaction system are identified. These parameters permit a spectral representation of the dynamic peak response. Response spectra assist the practicing engineers in evaluating the expected dynamic peak response in the design process of railway bridges without performing time-consuming time history analyses.
This paper presents a method for assessing the dynamic responses of gravity-based structures (GBS) under various seismic loads, with a focus on fluid-structure-ground interactions. Models of GBSs and their surrounding environments were developed, incorporating interaction effects among the structure, seawater, and seabed. Dynamic responses of the GBS subjected to three seismic loads-Chi-Chi, Northridge01, and Northridge02-were calculated, with consideration of both horizontal and vertical accelerations, as well as displacements. Parametric studies indicated that the primary factors affecting the dynamic responses of GBS were seismic loads characterized by significant input forces and accelerations. The frictional force on the ground had minimal impact on the horizontal and vertical displacements of the GBS. Weight emerged as a critical factor in anchoring the GBS to the ground and minimizing vertical accelerations and displacements.
Flow-induced vibration in heat exchanger (or fuel rod) in nuclar power plant can cause dynamic interactions between tubes and tube supports resulting in fretting-wear. To increase the reliability and design life of heat exchanger components, design criteria that establish acceptable limits of vibration and minimize fretting wear are necessary. The fretting-wear rate is dependent upon material combination, contact configuration, environmental conditions and tube-to tube support dynamic interaction. It is demostrated that the fretting -wear rate correlates well with tube-to-support contact force or work rate. The tube-to-support dynamic interaction, which consists of dynamic contact forces and tube motion, is used to relate single-span wear data to real heat exchanger configurations consisting of multi-span tube bundles. This paper describes the test facility to measure tube-to-support dynamic impact force and reports its dynamic characteristics through the four impact tests - a force transduces independent and external impact tests, central ring inside impact test and additional cylinder impact test. Through the tests the impact parameter change dependent upon the material difference of impacting ball is studied, and the impact parameters of Force Transducer Assembly components are measured. And also the dynamic behavior of Force Transducer Assembly is analyzed. The force measurement technique herein is shown to provide a reasonable measure of dynamic contact forces.
In this paper, a three dimensional soil-structure interaction (SSI) is numerically simulated using finite element method in order to analyse the foundation moments in annular raft of tall slender chimney structures incorporating the effect of openings in the structure and the effect of soil flexibility, when the structure-soil system is subjected to El Centro (1940) ground motion in time domain. The transient dynamic analysis is carried out using LS-DYNA software. The linear ground response analysis program ProShake has been adopted for obtaining the ground level excitation for different soil conditions, given the rock level excitation. The radial and tangential bending moments of annular raft foundation obtained from this SSI analysis have been compared with those obtained from conventional method according to the Indian standard code of practice, IS 11089:1984. It is observed that tangential and radial moments increase with the increase in flexibility of soil. The analysis results show that the natural frequency of chimney decreases with increase in supporting soil flexibility. Structural responses increase when the openings in the structure are also considered. The purpose of this paper is to propose the need for an accurate evaluation of the soilstructure interaction forces which govern the structural response.
This study is devoted to developing many new substructure models for ballasted railway track by using the pyramid model philosophy. As the effect of railway embankment has been less considered in the previous studies in the field of vehicle/track interaction, so the present study develops the pyramid models in the presence of railway embankment and implements them in vehicle/track interaction dynamic analyses. Considering a moving car body as multi bodies with 10 degrees of freedom and the ballasted track including rail, sleeper, ballast, subgrade and embankment, two categories of numerical analyses are performed by considering the new substructure systems including type A (initiation of stress overlap areas in adjacent sleepers from the ballast layer) or type B (initiation of stress overlap areas in adjacent sleepers from the subgrade layer). A comprehensive sensitivity analyses are performed on effective parameters such as ballast height, sleepers spacing and sleeper width. The results indicate that the stiffness of subgrade, embankment and foundation increased by increasing the ballast height. Also, by increasing the ballast height, rail and ballast vertical displacement decreased.

This paper presents a dynamic association and natural interaction method for multi-displays composed of smart devices. Users can intuitively associate relations among smart devices by shake gestures, flexibly modify the layout of the display by tilt gestures, and naturally interact with the multi-display by multi-touch interactions. First of all, users shake their smart devices to create and bind a group for a multi-display with a matrix configuration in an ad-hoc and collaborative situation. After the creation of the group, if needed, their display layout can be flexibly changed by tilt gestures that move the tilted device to the nearest vacant cell in the matrix configuration. During the tilt gestures, the system automatically modifies the relation, view, and configuration of the multi-display. Finally, users can interact with the multi-display through multi-touch interactions just as they interact with a single large display. Furthermore, depending on the context or role, synchronous or asynchronous mode is available to them for providing a split view or another UI. We will show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach by demonstrating implementation results and evaluating the method by the usability study.

Railway bridges are subject to dynamic loads generated by the interaction between moving vehicles and the bridge structures. These dynamic loads result in response fluctuations in bridge members. To investigate the real dynamic behavior of the bridge, therefore, a number of analytical and experimental Investigations should be carried out. In this paper, a train/track/bridge interaction analysis program for evaluating the dynamic characteristics of bridges due to KTX operation in terms of structural safety, operational safety and passenger comfort is developed. To build a practical model of train/track/bridge, Hertzian spring for wheel/rail contact modeling and Winkler element for ballast are applied. This program also used torsional degree of freedom and constraint equation based on geometrical relationship in order to take into consideration three-dimensional eccentricity effect due to the operation on double track through quasi-three dimensional analysis. To verify the developed Program, comparison has been made between the measured results and those of simulation of the typical PSC box bridge(2@40m=80m) of the KHSR bridges.

This study aims to investigate the dynamic interaction characteristics between Maglev vehicles and an elevated guideway. A more detailed model for the dynamic interaction of the vehicle/guideway is proposed. The proposed model incorporates a 3D full vehicle model based on prototyping, flexible guideway by a modal superposition method, and levitation electromagnets including the feedback controller into an integrated model. The proposed model was applied to an urban transit Maglev developed for a commercial application to analyze the dynamic response of the vehicle and guideway, and the effect of the surface roughness of the rail, mid-span guideway deflections, and air gap variations are then investigated from the numerical simulation.

CWR (Continuous Welded Rail) may be broken when a temperature drop below the neutral temperature changes in axial force, causing tensile fracture and rail gap, in winter. Rail-breaks may lead to the damage of the rail and wheel by dynamic load, and the reduction of running safety if not detected before the passage of a train. In this study, the track and train coupled model with open gap for dynamic interaction analysis, is proposed. Linear track and train systems is coupled by the nonlinear Herzian contact spring and the complete system matrices of total track-train system is constructed. And the interaction phenomenon considering open gap, was defined by assigning the irregularity functions between the two sides of a gap. Time history analysis, which have an iteration scheme such as $Newmark-{\beta}$ method based on Modified Newton-Raphson methods, was performed to solve the nonlinear equation. Finally, numerical studies are performed to assess the effect of various parameters of system, apply to various speeds, open gap size and the support stiffness of rail.
