As the use of mobile devices such as smartphones increases, there is growing interest on the benefits of virtualization in embedded systems. Full virtualization has the advantage of running the guest virtual machine without modifying the guest operating system. However, full virtualization suffers slow execution speed due to the cost of context switching between the virtual machines and the virtual machine monitor. In this paper, we propose a translated block and context switching optimization to improve the guest execution speed in the embedded system. As a result, the improved dynamic binary translator is up to 5.95 times faster than the native execution. Performance degradation is less than that of the other virtualization system.
The systematic optimal tuning of power system stabilizers (PSSs) using the dynamic embedded optimization (DEO) technique is described in this paper. A hybrid system model which has the differential-algebraic-impulsive-switched (DAIS) structure is used as a tool for the DEO of PSSs. Two numerical optimization methods, which are the steepest descent and Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) algorithms, are investigated to implement the DEO using the hybrid system model. As well as the gain and time constant of phase lead compensator, the output limits of PSSs with non-smooth nonlinearities are considered as the parameters to be optimized by the DEO. The simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of the PSSs tuned by the proposed DEO technique on the IEEE 39 bus New England system to mitigate system damping.
In order to reduce the expensive CPU time for design sensitivity analysis in dynamic response optimization, this study introduces the design sensitivities approximated within estimated confidence radius in dynamic response optimization with ALM method. The confidence radius is estimated by the linear approximation with Hessian of quasi-Newton formula and qualifies the approximate gradient to be validly used during optimization process. In this study, if the design changes between consecutive iterations are within the estimated confidence radius, then the approximate gradients are accepted. Otherwise, the exact gradients are used such as analytical or finite differenced gradients. This hybrid design sensitivity analysis method is embedded in an in-house ALM based dynamic response optimizer, which solves three typical dynamic response optimization problems and one practical design problem for a tracked vehicle suspension system. The optimization results are compared with those of the conventional method that uses only exact gradients throughout optimization process. These comparisons show that the hybrid method is more efficient than the conventional method. Especially, in the tracked vehicle suspension system design, the proposed method yields 14 percent reduction of the total CPU time and the number of analyses than the conventional method, while giving similar optimum values.
Based on the value of the Lagrange multiplier and the degree of constraint activeness, a new update rule is proposed for penalty parameters of the ALM method. The theoretical exposition of this suggested update rule is presented by using the algorithmic interpretation and the geometric interpretation of the augmented Lagrangian. This interpretation shows that the penalty parameters can effect the performance of the ALM method. Also, it offers a lower limit on the penalty parameters that makes the augmented Lagrangian to be bounded. This lower limit forms the backbone of the proposed update rule. To investigate the numerical performance of the update rule, it is embedded in our ALM based dynamic response optimizer, and the optimizer is applied to solve six typical dynamic response optimization problems. Our optimization results are compared with those obtained by employing three conventional update rules used in the literature, which shows that the suggested update rule is more efficient and more stable than the conventional ones.

The embedded processor market has grown rapidly and consistently with the appearance of mobile devices. In an embedded system, the power consumption and execution time are important factors affecting the performance. The system performance is determined by both hardware and software. Although the hardware architecture is high-end, the software runs slowly due to the low quality of codes. This study compared the performance of two major compilers, LLVM and GCC on a32-bit EISC embedded processor. The dynamic instructions and static code sizes were evaluated from these compilers with the EEMBC benchmarks.LLVM generally performed better in the ALU intensive benchmarks, whereas GCC produced a better register allocation and jump optimization. The dynamic instruction count and static code of GCCwere on average 8% and 7% lower than those of LLVM, respectively.

Nowadays, the broad availability of cameras and embedded systems makes the application of computer vision very promising as a supporting technology for intelligent transportation systems, particularly in the field of vehicle tracking. Although there are several existing trackers, the limitation of using low-cost cameras, besides the relatively low processing power in embedded systems, makes most of these trackers useless. For the tracker to work under those conditions, the video frame rate must be reduced to decrease the burden on computation. However, doing this will make the vehicle seem to move faster on the observer's side. This phenomenon is called the fast motion challenge. This paper proposes a tracker called dynamic swarm particle (DSP), which solves the challenge. The term particle refers to the particle filter, while the term swarm refers to particle swarm optimization (PSO). The fundamental concept of our method is to exploit the continuity of vehicle dynamic motions by creating dynamic models based on PSO. Based on the experiments, DSP achieves a precision of 0.896 and success rate of 0.755. These results are better than those obtained by several other benchmark trackers.
In this paper, we describe the development and optimization of an embedded Biuetooth solution on an SoC platform for real-time audio streaming over a Bluetooth wireless link. The solution includes embedded Bluetooth protocol stack and profile simplemented on a virtual operating system for portability, and other optimization techniques to fully exploit the benefits of multimedia-oriented SoC. The optimization techniques implemented in this paper are memory access minimization by using on-chip scratch pad memory, codec library optimization with DSP and parallel memory access instruction set, and dynamic audio quality adjustment regarding current wireless link status. Experimental results show that the optimized solution presented in this paper can support high-qualify audio streaming without the support of external memory.
Interest is increasing in electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis for embedded devices, creating the need to develop an algorithm suitable for a low-power, low-memory embedded device. Linear approximation of the ECG signal facilitates the detection of fiducial points by expressing the signal as a small number of vertices. However, dynamic programming, a global optimization method used for linear approximation, has the disadvantage of high complexity using memoization. In this paper, the calculation area and memory usage are improved using a linear approximated template. The proposed algorithm reduces the calculation area required for dynamic programming through local optimization around the vertices of the template. In addition, it minimizes the storage space required by expressing the time information using the error from the vertices of the template, which is more compact than the time difference between vertices. When the length of the signal is L, the number of vertices is N, and the margin tolerance is M, the spatial complexity improves from O(NL) to O(NM). In our experiment, the linear approximation processing time was 12.45 times faster, from 18.18 ms to 1.46 ms on average, for each beat. The quality distribution of the percentage root mean square difference confirms that the proposed algorithm is a stable approximation.

RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power Lossy Network) is a standardized routing protocol for LLNs (Low power and Lossy Networks) by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). RPL creates routes and builds a DODAG (Destination Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph) through OF (Objective Function) defining routing metrics and optimization objectives. RPL supports a leaf mode which does not allow any child nodes. In this paper, we propose INFRA-RPL which provides a dynamic leaf mode functionality to a leaf node with the mobility. The proposed protocol is implemented in the open-source IoT operating system, Contiki-NG and Cooja simulator, and its performance is evaluated. The evaluation results show that INFRA-RPL outperforms the existing protocols in the terms of PDR, latency, and control message overhead.
The optimization for dynamic response associated with a cylindrical shell which is made of laminated composites embedded in a piezoelectric layer which is subjected to temperature rises and is resting on an elastic foundation is investigated for the first time. The first shear order theory (FSDT) is utilized in order to obtain the strain relations of the shell. Then, using the energy method, the equations of motions as well as boundary condition of the problem are attained. The formulation of this study together with the solution procedure which is a numerical solution method, differential quadrature method (DQM) is validated using other researches. This paper presents a thorough study on the parameters which impacts the vibration frequency of the laminated shell. The results of this paper shows that any type of laminated composite shell can reduce the vibration frequency providing that the angle related to layer are higher than 85 degrees. Also, in order to reduce the effect of temperature rises, the laminated composites instead of orthotropic one can be used.
