  • Human beings usually absorb a shock from terrain during walking through the damping effects of joints, muscles and skin. With this analogy, a robot-leg with a shock absorber is built to absorb the impact forces at its foot during high-speed walking on irregular terrain. To control the hip position while walking, the dynamic controller suitable for high speed walking is designed and implemented based on a dynamic model by Kane's equation. The hip position tracking performances of various controllers (PID controller, computed torque controller and feedforward torque controller) are compared through the experiments of the real robot-leg.

  • Generally, underwater gliders do not have separate propellers for their forward movement. They derive a propulsive force due to the difference between their buoyancy and gravity. The attitude of an underwater glider is controlled by changing the relative position of the buoyancy center and mass center. In this study, we derived nonlinear 6-DOF dynamic and mathematical models for the motion controller and buoyancy controller. Using these equations, we performed dynamic underwater glider simulations and verified the suitability of the design and dynamic performance of the proposed underwater glider.

  • There have been many researches for optimal controllers in multivariable systems, and they generally use accurate linear models of the plant dynamics. Real systems, however, contain nonlinearities and high-order dynamics that may be difficult to model using conventional techniques. Therefore, it is necessary a PID gain tuning method without explicit modeling for the multivariable plant dynamics. The PID tuning method utilizes the sign of Jacobian and gradient descent techniques to iteratively reduce the error-related objective function. This paper, especially, focuses on the role of I-controller when there is a steady state error. However, it is not easy to tune I-gain unlike P- and D-gain because I-controller is mainly operated in the steady state. Simulations for an overhead crane system with dynamic friction show that the proposed PID-LC algorithm improves controller performance, even in the steady state error.

  • A design of controller for vehicle dynamic control(VDC) and its implementation on the real vehicle were introduced. The controller has been designed using a three-degrees-of-freedom(3DOF) yaw plane vehicle, and the control algorithm was implemented on the vehicle by control prototyping system dSPACE. A hybrid control algorithm, which makes full use of the advantages of robust and fuzzy control, was adopted in the control system. Field test results show that the performance of the vehicle handling dynamics with hybrid controller is improved obviously compared to that without VDC and with simple robust controller on skiddy roads(friction coefficients lower than 0.3).

  • In this paper, the hybrid-type current controller for inverter TIG systems was implemented and it was shown that the low-current pulse wave forms with high dynamic performance could be obtained. It is not sri easy to obtain the optimum gain tuning of PID controllers in digital PWM control methods. Hybrid control methods which uses automatic tuning techniques after adding fuzzy control methods to traditional PID controllers are chosen to improve the dynamic performance of PID controller's. To demonstrate the practical significance and dynamic performance improvement of the results, some simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • Dynamic behaviour of a slider-crank mechanism associated with a smart flexible connecting rod is investigated. Effect of various mechanisms' parameters including crank length, flexibility of the connecting rod and the slider's mass on the dynamic behaviour is studied. Two control schemes are proposed for elastodynamic vibration suppression of the flexible connecting rod and also obtaining a constant angular velocity for the crank. The first scheme is based on feedback linearization approach and the second one is based on a sliding mode controller. The input signals are applied by an electric motor located at the crank ground joint, and two layers of piezoelectric film bonded to the top and bottom surfaces of the connecting rod. Both of the controllers successfully suppress the vibrations of the elastic linkage.

  • Designing a feedback controller requires a dynamic model of the process to be controlled. But the GMA welding process models have not been fully developed for many reasons such as complexity of the welding process and lack of reliable sensors. Because of the complexity of the welding system, we obtained a dynamic model for control using system identification routines, rather than derived a model from fundamental physical laws. The controller was designed based on the experimentally derived linear dynamic model of the welding process. In order to demonstrate application of the designed controller, the simulation was carried out.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. After calculating the natural vibration characteristics, the positive position feedback controller was designed to cope with the first two modes. To this end, the equations of motion were reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The theoretical results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.
