The objective of this study was to link conformational changes of proteins at a water/methylene chloride interface to their destabilization upon emulsification. When 4 aqueous protein solutions (bovine serum albumin, $\beta$-lactoglobulin, ovalbumin, or ribonuclease) were emulsified in methylene chloride, considerable proportions of all the proteins became water insoluble aggregates. There were also noticeable changes in the compositions of their water-soluble species. A series of water/methylene chloride interfacial reactions upon the proteins was considered a major cause of the phenomena observed. Based on this supposition, the interfacial tension was determined by a Kruss DVT-10 drop volume tensiometer under various experimental conditions. It substantiated that the interfacial tension was high enough to cause the adsorption of all the proteins. Under our experimental conditions, their presence in the aqueous phase resulted in reductions of the interfacial tension by the degrees of 8.5 - 17.1 mN $m^{-1}$. In addition, dynamic changes in the interfacial tension were monitored to compare relative rates at which the adsorbed proteins underwent conformational, structural rearrangements at the interface. Such information helped make a prediction about how easily proteins would denature and aggregate during emulsification. Our study indicated that emulsifying aqueous protein solutions in organic solvents should be handled with care, due to adverse interfacial effects.

The embedded atom method (EAM) of Daw and Baskes as a semiempirical method, has been successfully applied to the fcc or nearly filled d-band transition metals due to its computational feasibility and its methodological simplicity. Then Baskes modified the EAM (MEAM) to include directional bonding and applied it to metals, semiconductors, and diatomic gases, all of which have different types of bondings. Here, we present a detailed study of the energetics of adsorption on the fcc(111) surfaces and binary system within the framework of MEAM. In adsorption on fcc(111) surfaces, there are two energetically favored sites, so called, fcc site and hcp site, which may trigger stacking fault in the growth of films and might switch growth mode between 3D growth and layer by layer growth. We scrutinized the role of the hcp sites, which would offer dynamic growth pathways although the dynamics are not yet clear within the limited experimental resolution. Featuring these transient motions in the atomic level should contribute to the understanding the growth mechanisms on fcc(111) surface. And we also applied MEAM for initial stage energetics at the Cr coverage of sub- monolayer on W(110). We hope that recently observed extraordinary growth behavior at the Cr coverage of 0.7 monolayer, self- organized nano-scale lines, can be resolved in this MEAM binary system calculation.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG1K) and sulfonated PEG (PEG1K-SO$_3$) methacrylate (MA) copolymers have been prepared and characterized. The structures of the synthesized copolymers were confirmed by $^1$H and $^{13}$ C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The bulk characteristics of the copolymers were evaluated by viscosity and thermal analysis. The surface properties of the copolymers were investigated using dynamic contact angle measurements and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The hydrophilicity of the surfaces modified with PEG1KMA or PEG1K-SO$_3$MA increased, possibly as a result of the orientation of the hydrophilic PEG1KMA/PEG1K-SO$_3$MA chains into the water phase. Platelets adhered less to the surfaces of the copolymers than they did to a polyurethane control. In addition, adhesion of platelets to the copolymer surfaces decreased upon increasing the chain density of PEG1KMA and sulfonated PEG1KMA in the copolymers. Both bacterial adhesion and protein adsorption were significantly reduced on the copolymer surfaces and their levels differ depending on the kind of surface or media.
The objective of this study is the removal of chromium from tannery wastewater by electrosorption on carbon prepared from lignocellulosic natural residue "peach stones' thermally treated. The followed steps for obtaining coal in chronological order were: cleaning, drying, crushing and finally its carbonization at $900^{\circ}C$. The characterization of the carbon material resulted in properties comparable to those of many coals industrially manufactured. The study of the dynamic adsorption of chromium on the obtained material resulted in a low removal rate (33.7%) without applied potential. The application of negative potentials of -0.7 V and -1.4 increases the adsorption of chromium up to 90% and 96% respectively. Whereas a positive potential of +1.4V allows desorption of the contaminant of 138%.
This study was designed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of phages against Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium ATCC 19585 (STWT), S. Typhimurium KCCM 40253 (STKCCM), ciprofloxacin-induced S. Typhimurium ATCC 19585 strains (STCIP), and S. Typhimurium CCARM 8009 (STCCARM). Phages, including PBST-10, PBST-13, PBST-32, PBST-35, P-22, and P-22 B1 had narrow host ranges. The adsorption rates of all phages ranged from 47 to 85%, 58 to 95%, and 61 to 93%, respectively, against STWT, STKCCM, and STCIP, while the lowest adsorption rates ranged from 14 to 36% against STCCARM. The phage burst sizes were from 43 to 350, 37 to 530, 66 to 500, and 24 to 500 plaque-forming units (PFUs) per infected STWT, STKCCM, STCIP, and STCCARM, respectively. The STCIP strain was effectively inhibited by all phages at the early of incubation period. These results provide useful information for better understanding the phage behaviors against antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-sensitive pathogens.
To investigate dimensional responses of wood under dynamic temperature condition, poplar (populous euramericana Cv.) specimens, 20 mm in radial (R) and tangential (T) directions with two thicknesses of 4 and 10 mm along the grain, were exposed to cyclic temperature changes in square wave between $25^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$ at 60% relative humidity (RH) for three different cycling periods of 6 h, 12 h and 24 h. R and T dimensional changes measured during the cycling gave the following results: 1) Transverse dimensional changes of the specimens were generally square but at an opposite phase and lagged behind the imposed temperature changes. The phase lag was inversely correlated with cycling period, but positively related to specimen thickness, while the response amplitude was directly proportional to cycling period, but in a negative correlation with specimen thickness. 2) The specimens showed swelling hysteresis behavior. The heat shrinkage coefficient (HSC) became greater as cycling period increased or specimen thickness decreased. 3) Dimensional changes of the specimens produced deformation accumulation during repeated adsorption and desorption. The deformation accumulating ratio decreased with an increase in cycling period and specimen thickness. 4) Wood suffered 1.5 times as many dimensional changes per unit temperature variation as per unit humidity variation, and this deformation behaved even more seriously under static condition.

Based on solid phase extraction, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry procedure for determining phenol and its derivatives in natural water was presented. In solid phase extraction, three types of techniques using solid phase adsorption material were treated with acid and salt, and converted second portion of acetyl derivatives. Under the these condition, extraction efficiency and detection ability dependent on extraction methods were discussed. Obtained results using optimized solid phase extraction techniques showed more convenience, simplifier and lower cost than the conventional analytical methods with holding wide dynamic range and lower detection limits.
Protein affinity membrane was prepared via the coating of chitosan gel on the porous flat polysulfone membrane surface, followed by the immobilization f the reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) to the chitonsan gel. The maximum protein binding capacity of affinity membrane was about 70${\mu}g/cm^2$ determined by the batch adsorption experiments of human serum albumin (HSA). Using module of this membrane, the characteristics of protein chromatography were investigated through the experiments of elution and frontal chromatography of HSA. This membrane module promises as a chromatography column, since it represented a lower pressure drop and a greater reproducibility. The protein separation ratio was significantly influenced by the flow rate of mobile phase and the injection quantity of HSA. The dynamic protein binding capacity of module decreased from the equilibrium binding capacity with increasing flow rate and approached the value of 15 - 20 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for flow rates above 6 mL/min.

Integrin αvβ3 is one of the receptors expressed in cancer cells. RGD peptides have the potential to target integrin αvβ3 (receptor), which can increase drug delivery efficiency. In this study, 55 different RGD dimer motifs were investigated. At first, the binding energy between RGD peptides and the receptor was calculated using molecular docking. Then, three RGD peptides with the strongest binding energy with the receptor were selected, and their dynamic adsorption on the receptor was simulated by molecular dynamics (MD). The obtained results showed that a sequence that has RGD at the beginning and end with tryptophan (TRP) has strong Lennard-Jones (LJ) and electrostatic interactions with Integrin αvβ3 and has changed the conformation of receptor significantly, which analyzed by root mean square deviation (RMSD) and radius of gyration.
The CMCs of LA and LA3 nonionic surfactants obtained from the reaction between glycidol and lauryl alcohol were found to be $0.97{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ and $1.02{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ respectively and the surface tensions for 1 wt% surfactant were 26.99 and 27.48 mN/m respectively. Dynamic surface tension measurements using a maximum bubble pressure tensiometer showed that the adsorption rate of surfactant molecules at the interface between the air and the surfactant solution was found to be relatively fast in both surfactant systems, presumably due to the high mobility of surfactant molecules. The contact angles of LA and LA3 nonionic surfactants were 27.8 and $20.9^{\circ}$ respectively and the dynamic interfacial tension measurement by a spinning drop tensiometer showed that interfacial tensions at equilibrium condition in both systems were almost the same. Also both surfactant systems reached equilibrium in 2~3 min. Both surfactant solutions showed high stability when evaluated by conductometric method and the LA nonionic surfactant system provided the higher foam stability than the LA3 nonionic surfactant system. The phase behavior experiments showed a lower phase or oil in water (O/W) microemulsion in equilibrium with an excess oil phase at all temperatures studied. No three-phase region was observed including a middle-phase microemulsion or a lamellar liquid crystalline phase.
