In this paper, transparent dynamic photoelastic experimental hybrid method for propagating cracks in orthotropic material was developed. Using transparent dynamic photoelastic experimental hybrid method, we can obtain stress intensity factor and separate the stress components from only isochromatic fringe patterns without using isoclinics. When crack is propagated with constant velocity, the contours of stress components in the vicinity of crack tip in orthotropic material are similar to those of isotropic material or orthotropic material with stationary crack under the static load. Dynamic stress intensity factors are decreased as crack growths. It was certified that the dynamic photoelastic experimental hybrid method was very useful for the analysis of the dynamic fracture mechanics.

Interfacial cracks between an isotropic and orthotropic material, subjected to static far field tensile loading are analyzed using the technique of photoelasticity. The fracture parameters are extracted from the full-field isochromatic data and the same are compared with that obtained using boundary collocation method. Dynamic Photoelasticity combined with high-speed digital photography is employed for capturing the isochromatics in the case of propagating interfacial cracks. The normalized stress intensity factors for static crack is greater when $\alpha=90^{\circ}C$ (fibers perpendicular to the interface) than when $\alpha=0^{\circ}C$ (fiber parallel to the interface) and those when $\alpha=90^{\circ}C$ are similar to ones of isotropic material. The dynamic stress intensity factors for interfacial propagating crack are greater when $\alpha=0^{\circ}C$ than $\alpha=90^{\circ}C$. The relationship between complex dynamic stress intensity factor $|K_D|$ and crack speed C is similar to that for isotropic homogeneous materials, the rate of increase of energy release rate G or $|K_D|$ with crack speed is not as drastic as that reported for homogeneous materials.

In this paper, the dynamic stress intensity factors of fracture mechanics are numerically computed in time domain using the FEM. For which the finite element formulations are derived applying the Galerkin method to the equations of motion in convolution integral as has been presented in the previous paper. To assure the strain fields of r$^{-1}$ 2/ singularity near the crack tip, the triangular quarter-point singular elements are imbedded in the finite element mesh discretized by the isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral elements. Two-dimensional problems of the elastodynamic fracture mechanics under the impact load are solved and compared with the existing numerical and analytical solutions, being shown that numerical results of good accuracy are obtained by the presented method.

The optical method of reflected and transmitted caustics has been utilized in mechanics investigations. This relatively new experimental technique has been successfully applied on various fracture analysis such as static and dynamic c rack propagation studies, some elasticity problems and contact stress, etc, In this study, the stress intensity factors in thin polycarbonate specimens, a kind of optically anisotropic material, under Mode I loading condition are estimated by the method of caustics. The values of stress intensity factors obtained from theoretical caustics shape are compared by the experiment. It is confirmed that the two stress intensity factors agree well with Srawley's solution.

A solution is given for the elastodynamic problem of a crack perpendicular to the graded interfacial zone in bonded materials under the action of anti plane shear impact. The interfacial zone is modeled as a nonhomogeneous interlayer with the power-law variations of its shear modulus and mass density between the two dissimilar, homogeneous half-planes. Laplace and Fourier integral transforms are employed to reduce the transient problem to the solution of a Cauchy-type singular integral equation in the Laplace transform domain. Via the numerical inversion of the Laplace transforms, the values of the dynamic stress intensity factors are obtained as a function of time. As a result, the influences of material and geometric parameters of the bonded media on the overshoot characteristics of the dynamic stress intensities are discussed. A comparison is also made with the corresponding elastostatic solutions, addressing the inertia effect on the dynamic load transfer to the crack tips for various combinations of the physical properties.

The dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF ; $K_{I}$$^{dyn}$) were studied in some polymeric materials using caustics method with a high speed camera system. Also crack tip propagation speed was measured by dynamic crack propagation velocity measuring device. To calculate DSIF a finite element analysis program-INha Stress Analysis Moving CRack(INSAMCR) was utilized. Dynamic fracture characteristics were investigated to verify a relationship between DSIF and crack tip propagation speed and acceleration in PMMA, Homalite-100 and Polycarbonate. The relationship between dynamic stress intensity factor and crack tip velocity revealed typical shapes. Measured crack tip acceleration data envelope converges to the zero level with increasing DSIF. Equivalently crack tip velocities show a wide spread range at low values of DSIF, but become a constant with a higher DSIF. $1.2MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, $1.4MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ and $1.3 MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ were obtained as $K_{I}$$^{dyn}$ values to arrest the dynamic crack for PMMA, Homalite-100 and Polycarbonate, respectively. INSAMCR was run to verify experimental results in PMMA and shows good agreementment.

The stress field around the dynamically propagating interface crack tip under a remote mixed mode loading condition has been studied with the aid of dynamic photoelastic method. The variation of stress field around the dynamic interface crack tip is photographed by using the Cranz-Shardin type camera having $10^6$ fps rate. The dynamically propagating crack velocities and the shapes of isochromatic fringe loops are characterized for varying mixed load conditions in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. The dynamic interface crack tip complex stress intensity factors, $K_1\;and\;K_2$, determined by a hybrid-experimental method are found to increase as the load mixture ratio of y/x (vertical/horizontal) values. Furthermore, it is found that the dynamically propagating interface crack velocities are highly dependent upon the varying mixed mode loading conditions and that the velocities are significantly small compared to those under the mode I impact loading conditions obtained by Shukla (Singh & Shukla, 1996a, b) and Rosakis (Rosakis et al., 1998) in the USA.

In this paper, the dynamic response of a piezoelectric layer with a penny-shaped crack is investigated. The piezoelectric layer is subjected to an axisymmetrical action of both mechanical and electrical impacts. Two kinds of crack surface conditions, i.e., electrically impermeable and electrically permeable, are adopted. Based upon integral transform technique, the crack boundary value problem is reduced to a system of Fredholm integral equations in the Laplace transform domain. By making use of numerical Laplace inversion the time-dependent dynamic stress and electric displacement intensity factors are obtained, and the dynamic energy release rate is further derived. Numerical results are plotted to show the effects of both the piezoelectric layer thickness and the electrical impact loadings on the dynamic fracture behaviors of the crack tips.

Using the theory of linear piezoelectricity, the dynamic response of a central crack in a functionally graded piezoelectric ceramic under anti-plane shear impact is analyzed. We assume that the properties of the functionally graded piezoelectric material vary continuously along the thickness. By using the Laplace and Fourier transform, the problem is reduced to two pairs of dual integral equations and then into Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic stress intensity factors are presented to show the dependence of the gradient of material properties and electric loading.
