  • This paper suggests the development of dynamic forecasting model for short-term power demand based on Radial Basis Function Network and Pal's GLVQ algorithm. Radial Basis Function methods are often compared with the backpropagation training, feed-forward network, which is the most widely used neural network paradigm. The Radial Basis Function Network is a single hidden layer feed-forward neural network. Each node of the hidden layer has a parameter vector called center. This center is determined by clustering algorithm. Theatments of classical approached to clustering methods include theories by Hartigan(K-means algorithm), Kohonen(Self Organized Feature Maps %3A SOFM and Learning Vector Quantization %3A LVQ model), Carpenter and Grossberg(ART-2 model). In this model, the first approach organizes the load pattern into two clusters by Pal's GLVQ clustering algorithm. The reason of using GLVQ algorithm in this model is that GLVQ algorithm can classify the patterns better than other algorithms. And the second approach forecasts hourly load patterns by radial basis function network which has been constructed two hidden nodes. These nodes are determined from the cluster centers of the GLVQ in first step. This model was applied to forecast the hourly loads on Mar. $4^{th},\;Jun.\;4^{th},\;Jul.\;4^{th},\;Sep.\;4^{th},\;Nov.\;4^{th},$ 1995, after having trained the data for the days from Mar. $1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Jun.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Jul.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Sep.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;and\;from\;Nov.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},$ 1995, respectively. In the experiments, the average absolute errors of one-hour ahead forecasts on utility actual data are shown to be 1.3795%.

  • Alignments of railways recently constructed in Korea have been straightened due to the advent of high-speed rail, which means increasing the numbers of tunnels and bridges. Overbreak during tunnel construction may be unavoidable, and is very influential on overall stability. Over-excavation in tunneling is also one of the most important factors in construction costs. Overbreak problems around crown areas have decreased with improvements of excavation methods, but overbreak problems around bottom areas have not decreased because those areas are not very influential on tunnel stability compared with crown areas. The filling costs of 10 cm thickness of overbreak at the bottom of a tunnel are covered under construction costs by Korea Railway Authority regulations, but filling costs for more than the covered thickness are considered losses of construction cost. The filling material for overbreak bottoms of tunnels should be concrete, but concrete and mixed granular materials with fractured rock are also used for some sites. Tunnels in which granular materials with fractured rock are used may have a discontinuous section under the concrete slab track. The discontinuous section influences the propagation of waves generated from train operation. When the bottom of a tunnel is filled with only concrete material, the bottom of the tunnel can be considered as a continuous section, in which the waves generated from a train may propagate without reflection waves. However, a discontinuous section filled with mixed granular materials may reflect waves, which can cause resonance of vibration. The filled materials and vibration propagation characteristics are studied in this research. Tunnel bottom filling materials that have ratios of granular material to concrete of 5.0 %, 11.5 %, and 18.0 % are investigated. Samples were made and tested to determine their material properties. Static numerical analyses were performed using the FEM program under train operation load; test results were found to satisfy the stability requirements. However, dynamic analysis results show that some mixed ratios may generate resonance vibration from train operation at certain speeds.

  • We have used a nonlinear quasi-geostrophic model to study effects of lateral friction and bottom topography on the motion of warm eddies. The two empirical orthogonal functions of the stream function, accounting for the vertical structure, represent the barotropic and first baroclinic dynamic modes. This model is integrated 360 days on a 1000 km ${\times}$ 1000 km domain with a resolution of 10 km ${\times}$ 10 km including both the thermocline and idealized topography of the East Sea. Prescribed inflow through the Korea Strait is compensated by outflow through the Tsugaru Strait. The balance between the nonlinear advection term and the planetary ${\beta}$-effect tends to make northward movement of warm eddy over a flat bottom. The motion of a warm eddy over a sloping topography can be dominated by the nonlinear advection, while nonlinearity plays a secondary role over a flat topography. For eddies dispersing over topography, the nonlinear tendency is a function of time. For a strong warm eddy, northward propagation can occur. For intermediate strength of eddies one might expect a balance between the nonlinear term and the topographic ${\beta}$-effect. As nonlinearity decreases with eddy dispersion, southward motion along the slope may occur by such as a topographic Rossby wave. Our numerical simulations have confirmed the importance of lateral friction on eddy motions, in such a way that the northward penetration of the warm eddy increases drastically by the decrease of the lateral friction. The northward motion of warm eddy can be prevented by reducing the Reynolds number sufficiently. We have also demonstrated the crucial role of topographic effects in the eddy motion process.

  • Nowadays calligraphy technique is widely utilized in diverse areas throughout the world. It is adopted in the visual environment of modern people comprehending from graphic design areas such as advertisement, package, symbol marks, logotypes, and movie posters to modern abstract paintings. It is because its dynamic and suggestive power of expression as symbolic and kinetic representation has been appreciated anew. In response to modern people's aversion from the mechanical and artificial digital environment as well as from the uniform, official, and modernistic trend, calligraphy technique is attracting people's attention as a new expressive style with oriental mysticism and emotional intimacy. Therefore, this study aims at illuminating the history of calligraphy, understanding its characteristics, searching for the expanded value of modern paintings and graphic designs, and ultimately contributing to the propagation of visual languages and expressive styles. In addition, this study attempted to establish the concept of Calli-Illust, which combines oriental painting techniques and materials and calligraphy techniques, and to explore for its potential uses in order to expand the area of illustration. According to the results of this study, calligraphy technique is a painting style of abstract expressionism, contributing to the expansion of the territory of a new formative area. Furthermore, this study proved that it is necessary to develop new expressive styles to overcome the limitation of design styles based on western rational, logical, and geometric functionalism, which have been received uncritically in the design environment of diversity. What is more, the concept and definition of calli-illust, which has been understood as a part of the concept of calligraphy so far, were clarified Research on calli-illust is just in its beginning stage. • The IEEE 802.11 standard has been used for wireless data networks such as wireless LAN, ad-hoc network, and vehicular ad-hoc network. Thus, the performance analysis of the IEEE 802.11 specification has been one of the hottest issues for network optimization and resource management. Most of the analysis studies were performed in a data plane of the IEEE 802.11 unicast. However, IEEE 802.11 broadcast is widely used for topology management, path management, and data dissemination. Thus, it is important to understand the performance of the broadcast scheme for the design of efficient wireless data network. In this contort, we analyze the IEEE 802.11 broadcast scheme in terms of the broadcast frame reception probability according to the distance from a sending node. Unlike the other works, our analysis framework includes not only the system parameters of the IEEE 802.11 specification such as transmission range, data rate, minimum contention window but also the networking environments such as the number of nodes, network load, and the radio propagation environments. Therefore, our analysis framework is expected to be used for the development of protocols and algorithms in a dynamic wireless data network.

  • In this study, we introduce a concept of advanced neurofuzzy polynomial networks(ANFPN), a hybrid modeling architecture combining neurofuzzy networks(NFN) and polynomial neural networks(PNN). These networks are highly nonlinear rule-based models. The development of the ANFPN dwells on the technologies of Computational Intelligence(Cl), namely fuzzy sets, neural networks and genetic algorithms. NFN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the rule-based structure of the ANFPN. The consequence part of the ANFPN is designed using PNN. At the premise part of the ANFPN, NFN uses both the simplified fuzzy inference and error back-propagation learning rule. The parameters of the membership functions, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted with the use of genetic optimization. As the consequence structure of ANFPN, PNN is a flexible network architecture whose structure(topology) is developed through learning. In particular, the number of layers and nodes of the PNN are not fixed in advance but is generated in a dynamic way. In this study, we introduce two kinds of ANFPN architectures, namely the basic and the modified one. Here the basic and the modified architecture depend on the number of input variables and the order of polynomial in each layer of PNN structure. Owing to the specific features of two combined architectures, it is possible to consider the nonlinear characteristics of process system and to obtain the better output performance with superb predictive ability. The availability and feasibility of the ANFPN are discussed and illustrated with the aid of two representative numerical examples. The results show that the proposed ANFPN can produce the model with higher accuracy and predictive ability than any other method presented previously.

  • Cryogenic spray characteristics of a nitrogen swirl injector operating in supercritical environment have been numerically investigated. By comparing the equation of states(EOS) used for supercritical condition, SRK EOS was applied to predict the nitrogen thermodynamic property under supercritical environment. A Chung's method was implemented for the calculation of viscosity and conductivity and Takahashi's correlation based on Fuller's Theorem was implemented for the calculation of diffusion coefficient. By injecting the nitrogen with 5 bar differential pressure into 50 bar chamber filled with nitrogen, numerical simulation has been conducted. The dynamic Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model has been compared with the algebraic Smagorinsky SGS model using FFT frequency analysis. The instability at the liquid film and gas core inside injector and the propagation of pressure oscillation into the injector has been investigated. The spreading angle of swirl injector obtained by numerical calculation has been validated with experimental result.

  • Evaluating stiffness of near-surface materials has been one of the critically important tasks in many civil engineering works. It is the main goal of geotechnical characterization. The so-called deflection-response method evaluates the stiffness by measuring stress-strain behavior of the materials caused by static or dynamic load. This method, however, evaluates the overall stiffness and the stiffness variation with depth cannot be obtained. Furthermore, evaluation of a large-area geotechnical site by this method can be time-consuming, expensive, and damaging to many surface points of the site. Wave-propagation method, on the other hand, measures seismic velocities at different depths and stiffness profile (stiffness change with depth) can be obtained from the measured velocity data. The stiffness profile is often expressed by shear-wave (S-wave) velocity change with depth because S-wave velocity is proportional to the shear modulus. that is a direct indicator of stiffiiess. The crosshole and downhole method measures the seismic velocity by placing sources and receivers (geophones) at different depths in a borehole. Requirement of borehole installation makes this method also time-consuming, expensive, and damaging to the sites. Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) method places both source and receivers at the surface, and records horizontally-propagating surface waves. Based upon the theory of surfacewave dispersion, the seismic velocities at different depths are calculated by analyzing the recorded surface-wave data. This method can be nondestructive to the sites. However, because only two receivers are used, the method requires multiple measurements with different field setups and, therefore, the method often becomes time-consuming and labor-intensive. Furthermore. the inclusion of noise wavefields cannot be handled properly, and this may cause the results by this method inaccurate. When multi-channel recording method is employed during the measurement of surface-waves, there are several benefits. First, usually single measurement is enough because multiple number (twelve or more) of receivers are used. Second, noise inclusion can be detected by coherency checking on the multi-channel data and handled properly so that it does not decrease the accuracy of the result. Third, various kinds of multi-channel processing techniques can be applied to f1lter unwanted noise wavefields and also to analyze the surface-wavefields more accurately and efficiently. In this way, the accuracy of the result by the method can be significantly improved. Fourth, the entire system of source, receivers, and recording-processing device can be tied into one unit, and the unit can be pulled by a small vehicle, making the survey speed very fast. In all these senses, multi-channel recording of surface waves is best suited for a routine method for geotechnical characterization in most of civil engineering works.

  • Because of structural changes in the international oil market and the economy, it is widely recognized that the impact of oil shocks on the economy has weaken since the mid-1980s. This study tries to examine the validity of the recent perception about the relationship between oils shocks and the economy, estimating the time-varying effects of oil shocks on the Korean economy. The results show that the dynamic effects of oil shocks normalized to a one standard deviation has been relatively constant, in contrast to the recent perception and a number of existing studies. In addition, because the shape of impulse response functions at each point in time spanning from 1984:II to 2017:IV has not been changed significantly, it seems that the propagation mechanism of oil shocks also has not been substantially altered. These findings indicate that even though structural changes of the economy, such as the reduction in the share of oil consumption and the spread of high-efficiency energy technologies, have been rapidly progressed, it is not still enough to offset the negative effects of oil shocks. Rather, it seems that the recent perception about the shrinking effects of oil shocks is mainly due to the assumptions that do not reflect changes in the size of oil shocks. In particular, this problem appears more pronounced in the case of the typical a one standard deviation increase oil shock under homoskedasticity assumption, which is widely adopted in the most VAR analyses. Therefore, in estimating the effects of oil shocks on the economy, it is important to specify the correct model and normalization method, to reflect changes in the size of oil shocks.

  • The novel integrated device, 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ DR-LD(distrbuted reflector laser diode) integrated EA-MOD (electro-absorption modulator) as light source, is proposed to improve the device yield and its operational performances. This device can be easily fabricated by the selective MOVPE technique and its fabrication processes are almost the same as the reported 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ DFB-LD(distributed feedback laser diode) integrated EA-MOD except the asymmetric gratings. The static and dynamic properties are investigated simultaneously by solving the transfer matrix method for light propagation, the time-dependent rate equation for carrier change and schr$\"{o}$dinger equation for QCSE (Quantum-Confined Stark Effect). The performances of the proposed device such as output power, chirp, and extinction ratio are compared with those of DFB-LD integrated EA-MOD. Under 10Gb/s NRZ modulation, we obtain that DR-LD integrated EA-MOD. is 30% higher in output power on the on-state, about 50% lower in chirp, and slightly larger in extinction ratio than DFB-LD integrated EA-MOD.-MOD.
