Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) is being developed to do maritime survey and maritime surveillance at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean engineering (KRISO). The goal is that USV should be operated at the maximum speed of 45 knots and it should be operated at sea state 4. Therefore the planing hull of USV should be excellent in resistance performance and manoeuvring performance. It is needed to check its performance using Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or analytic method before designing the hull. In this study, resistance performance was analyzed by EFD and CFD. EFD with heave and pitch was performed at high speed towing system in Seoul National University. CFD was performed using SNUFOAM based on openFOAM with dynamic mesh to calculate running attitudes. The results of CFD were compared with EFD results. The results of CFD were resistance, running attitudes and wave height. The flow distribution and pressure distribution were also analyzed. The results of numerical resistance was under estimated than EFD. Even though the results of CFD have a slight limitation, it can be successfully used to estimate the resistance performance of planing hull. In addition it can be used as a supplement for EFD results.

Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations have been carried out to study how coolant injection conditions influence the cooling efficiency and projectile ejection performance in a mixture-gas ejection system (or gas-steam launch system). The 3D single-phase computational model was verified using a 1D model constructed with reference to the previous research and then a two-phase flow computation simulating coolant injection on to hot gas was performed using a DPM (Discrete Phase Model). As a result of varying the coolant flow rate and number of injection holes, cooling efficiency was improved when the number of injection holes were increased. In addition, the change of the coalescence frequency and spatial distribution of coolant droplets caused by the injection condition variation resulted in a change of the droplet diameter, affecting the evaporation rate of coolant. The evaporation was found to be a critical factor in the design optimization of the ejection system by suppressing the pressure drop while the temperature decreases inside the breech.

Gait kinematics and kinetics have a similar tendency between men and women, yet it remains unclear how walking while carrying a load affects the gait mechanism. Twenty adults walked with preferred velocity on level ground of 20 m relative to change of a load carriage (no load, 15%, 30% of the body weights) aimed to observe gait mechanism. We measured gait posture using the three-dimensional image analysis and ground reaction force system during stance phase on left foot. In main effect of gender difference, men showed increased displacement of center of gravity (COG) compared to women, and it showed more extended joint angle of hip and knee in sagittal plane. In main effect of a load difference, knee joint showed more flexed postuel relative to increase of load carriage. In main effect of load difference on the kinetic variables, medial-lateral force, anterior-posterior force (1st breaking, 2nd propulsive), vertical force, center of pressure (COP) area, leg stiffness, and whole body stiffness showed more increased values relative to increase of load carriage. Also, men showed more increased COP area compared to women. Interaction showed in the 1st anterior-posterior force, and as a result of one-way variance analysis, it was found that a load main effect had a greater influence on the increase in the magnitude of the braking force than the gender. The data in this study explains that women require little kinematic alteration compared to men, while men in more stiff posture accommodate an added load compared to women during gait. Additionally, it suggests that dynamic stability is maintained by adopting different gait strategies relative to gender and load difference.
To improve the heat transfer efficiency of the reactor fuel assembly, it is necessary to accurately calculate the two-phase flow boiling characteristics and the critical heat flux (CHF) in the fuel assembly. In this paper, a Eulerian two-fluid model combined with the extended wall boiling model was used to numerically simulate the 5 × 5 fuel rod bundle with spacer grids (four sets of mixing vane grids and four sets of simple support grids without mixing vanes). We calculated and analyzed 11 experimental conditions under different pressure, inlet temperature, and mass flux. After comparing the CHF and the location of departure from the nucleate boiling obtained by the numerical simulation with the experimental results, we confirmed the reliability of computational fluid dynamic analysis for the prediction of the CHF of the rod bundle and the boiling characteristics of the two-phase flow. Subsequently, we analyzed the influence of the spacer grid and mixing vanes on the void fraction, liquid temperature, and secondary flow distribution. The research in this article provides theoretical support for the design of fuel assemblies.
To investigate the non-Gaussian properties of fluctuating wind pressures and the error margin of extreme wind loads on a long-span curved roof with matching and mismatching ratios of turbulence integral scales to depth (Lux/D), a series of synchronized pressure tests on the rigid model of the complex curved roof were conducted. The regions of Gaussian distribution and non-Gaussian distribution were identified by two criteria, which were based on the cumulative probabilities of higher-order statistical moments (skewness and kurtosis coefficients, Sk and Ku) and spatial correlation of fluctuating wind pressures, respectively. Then the characteristics of fluctuating wind-loads in the non-Gaussian region were analyzed in detail in order to understand the effects of turbulence integral-scale. Results showed that the fluctuating pressures with obvious negative-skewness appear in the area near the leading edge, which is categorized as the non-Gaussian region by both two identification criteria. Comparing with those in the wind field with matching Lux/D, the range of non-Gaussian region almost unchanged with a smaller Lux/D, while the non-Gaussian features become more evident, leading to higher values of Sk, Ku and peak factor. On contrary, the values of fluctuating pressures become lower in the wind field with a smaller Lux/D, eventually resulting in underestimation of extreme wind loads. Hence, the matching relationship of turbulence integral scale to depth should be carefully considered as estimating the extreme wind loads of long-span roof by wind tunnel tests.

The present study introduces a calibration method of the CSC model implemented in the LS-DYNA program for considering the material properties of ultra-high performance concrete(UHPC). Based on previous experimental studies, various parameters, which constitute three shear failure surfaces, pressure-volumetric strain curve, fracture energy, dynamic increase factor(DIF), and so on, are modified. Then, the proposed calibration method is verified by comparing the numerical result with the experimental data through the single element analysis. In addition, based on the established finite element models, the applicability of the calibrated CSC model is examined for UHPC structures subjected to impact and blast loadings.
To obtain the seismic response of lead-cored rubber, shape memory alloy (SMA)-rubber isolation Plate-shell Integrated Concrete Liquid-Storage Structure (PSICLSS), based on a PSICLSS in a water treatment plant, built a scale experimental model, and a shaking table test was conducted. Discussed the seismic responses of rubber isolation, SMA-rubber isolation PSICLSS. Combined with numerical model analysis, the vibration characteristics of rubber isolation PSICLSS are studied. The results showed that the acceleration, liquid sloshing height, hydrodynamic pressure of rubber and SMA-rubber isolation PSICLSS are amplified when the frequency of seismic excitation is close to the main frequency of the isolation PSICLSS. The earthquake causes a significant leakage of liquid, at the same time, the external liquid sloshing height is significantly higher than internal liquid sloshing height. Numerical analysis showed that the low-frequency acceleration excitation causes a more significant dynamic response of PSICLSS. The sinusoidal excitation with first-order sloshing frequency of internal liquid causes a more significant sloshing height of the internal liquid, but has little effect on the structural principal stresses. The sinusoidal excitation with first-order sloshing frequency of external liquid causes the most enormous structural principal stress, and a more significant external liquid sloshing height. In particular, the principal stress of PSICLSSS with long isolation period will be significantly enlarged. Therefore, the stiffness of the isolation layer should be properly adjusted in the design of rubber and SMA-rubber isolation PSICLSS.

Pre-stressed concrete circular spun piles are widely used in various infrastructure projects around the world and offer an economical deep foundation system with consistent and superior quality compared to cast in-situ and other concrete piles. Conventional methods for measuring the lateral response of piles have been limited to conventional instrumentation, such as electrical based gauges and pressure transducers. The problem with existing technology is that the sensors are not able to assist in recording the lateral stiffness changes of the pile which varies along the length depending on the distribution of the flexural moments and appearance of tensile cracks. This paper describes a full-scale bending test of a 1-m diameter spun pile of 30 m long and instrumented using advanced fibre optic distributed sensor, known as Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA). Optical fibre sensors were embedded inside the concrete during the manufacturing stage and attached on the concrete surface in order to measure the pile's full-length flexural behaviour under the prescribed serviceability and ultimate limit state. The relationship between moments-deflections and bending moments-curvatures are examined with respect to the lateral forces. Tensile cracks were measured and compared with the peak strains observed from BOTDA data which corroborated very well. By analysing the moment-curvature response of the pile, the structure can be represented by two bending stiffness parameters, namely the pre-yield (EI) and post-yield (EIcr), where the cracks reduce the stiffness property by 89%. The pile deflection profile can be attained from optical fibre data through closed-form solutions, which generally matched with the displacements recorded by Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers (LVDTs).
The present study aims to investigate the influence of the water to binder ratio of finishing mortar on the floor impact sound of apartments. For this, same resilient materials Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) with constant dynamic stiffness and different mortar layers with 52 %, 66 % and 72 % water to binder ratio respectively were used to build floating floor structures on which floor impact sounds were measured in standard testing facilities. As a result, it was found that light-weight floor impact sound was transmitted well when the water to binder ratio was 52% due to the high density. In case of heavy-weight floor impact sounds, since water to binder ratio of finishing mortar becomes higher as the weight of upper layer of resilient material lighter, it was shown that the natural frequency of floating floor structure moves to 63 Hz bandwidth which eventually cause a higher sound pressure level of floor impact sound. Thus, effect of water to binder ratio of mortar on the heavy-weight floor impact sounds was investigated.

Background: Individuals with Down syndrome present with several impairments such as hypotonia, ligament laxity, decreased muscle strength, insufficient muscular cocontraction, inadequate postural control, and disturbed proprioception. These factors are responsible for the developmental challenges faced by children with Down syndrome. These individuals also present with balance dysfunctions. Purpose: This systematic review aims to describe the motor dysfunction and balance impairments in children and adolescents with Down syndrome. Methods: We searched the Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, Wiley, and EBSCO databases for observational studies evaluating the motor abilities and balance performance in individuals with Down syndrome. The review was registered on PROSPERO. Results: A total of 1,096 articles were retrieved; after careful screening and scrutinizing against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were included in the review. Overall, the children and adolescents with Down syndrome showed delays and dysfunction in performing various activities such as sitting, pulling to stand, standing, and walking. They also presented with compensatory mechanisms to maintain their equilibrium in static and dynamic activities. Conclusion: The motor development of children with Down syndrome is significantly delayed due to structural differences in the brain. These individuals have inefficient compensatory strategies like increasing step width, increasing frequency of mediolateral center of pressure displacement, decreasing anteroposterior displacement, increasing trunk stiffness, and increasing posterior trunk displacement to maintain equilibrium. Down syndrome presents with interindividual variations; therefore, a thorough evaluation is required before a structured intervention is developed to improve motor and balance dysfunction.
