  • We present an interactive cloth simulation method based on the mass-spring model, which is the most widely used one in the field of cloth animation. We focus especially on the case where relatively strong forces are applied on relatively small number of mass-points. Through distributing the forces on some specific points to the overall mass-points, our method simulates the cloth in pseudo-real time. Given a deformed cloth, we start from resolving the super-elasticity effect using Provot's dynamic inverse method [9]. In the next stage, we adjust the angles between neighboring mass-points, to finally remove the unexpected zigzags due to the previous super-elasticity resolving stage.

  • Structural integrity can be accessed from dynamic deformations of structures. Moreover, dynamic deformations can be acquired from non-contact sensors such as video cameras. Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) algorithm is one of the commonly used methods for motion tracking. However, averaging throughout the extracted features would induce bias in the measurement. In addition, pixel-wise measurements can be converted to physical units through camera intrinsic. Still, the depth information is unreachable without prior knowledge of the space information. The assigned homogeneous coordinates would then mismatch manually selected feature points, resulting in measurement errors during coordinate transformation. In this study, a two-stage optimization method for video-based measurements is proposed. The manually selected feature points are first optimized by minimizing the errors compared with the homogeneous coordinate. Then, the optimized points are utilized for the KLT algorithm to extract displacements through inverse projection. Two additional criteria are employed to eliminate outliers from KLT, resulting in more reliable displacement responses. The second-stage optimization subsequently fine-tunes the geometry of the selected coordinates. The optimization process also considers the number of interpolation points at different depths of an image to reduce the effect of out-of-plane motions. As a result, the proposed method is numerically investigated by using a truss bridge as a physics-based graphic model (PBGM) to extract high-accuracy displacements from recorded videos under various capturing angles and structural conditions.

  • This paper adopts the system configuration to assess the reliability instead of making a fault tree (FT), which is a traditional method to analyze reliability of a certain system; this is the reliability block diagram (RBD) method. The RBD method is a graphical presentation of a system diagram connecting the subsystems of components according to their functions or reliability relationships. The equipment model for the reliability simulation is modeled based on the discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism. In order to make various alternatives of target system, this paper also adopts the system entity structure (SES), an ontological framework that hierarchically represents the elements of a system and their relationships. To enhance the calculation time of reliability analysis, GPU-based accelerations are adopted to the reliability simulation.

  • In order to improve user accessibility and interactivity, system scalability, service speed, and a non-standard internet web environment, we developed a Web-based geovisualization system of oceanographic information using HTML5 and dynamic particles. In particular, oceanographic and meteorological data generated from a satellite remote sensing and radar measurement and a 3-dimensioanl numerical model, has the characteristics of a heterogeneous large-capacity multi-dimensional continuous spatial and temporal variability, based on geographic information. Considering those attributes, we applied dynamic particles represent the spatial and temporal variations of vector type oceanographic data. HTML5, WebGL, Canvas, D3, and Leaflet map libraries were also applied to handle various multimedia data, graphics, map services, and location-based service as well as to implement multidimensional spatial and statistical analyses such as a UV chart.

  • Despite of the rich literature in discriminant analysis, this complicated subject remains much to be explored. In this article, we study the theoretical foundation that supports Fisher's linear discriminant analysis (LDA) by setting up the classification problem under the dimension reduction framework as in Li(1991) for introducing sliced inverse regression(SIR). Through the connection between SIR and LDA, our theory helps identify sources of strength and weakness in using CRIMCOORDS(Gnanadesikan 1977) as a graphical tool for displaying group separation patterns. This connection also leads to several ways of generalizing LDA for better exploration and exploitation of nonlinear data patterns.

  • This paper describes a robot simulator which enables a user to model a robot geometrically, and to evaluate performances of various robot control algorithms as well as to obtain physical understanding of robot and acruator dynamics. To achieve these goals, the kinematics and dynamics of a robot and interactive 3-D computer graphics which visulaize the motion of the robot were studied. The developed robot simulator consists of two parts:a dynamic simulator and a graphic simulator. To evaluate the robot simulator PUMA-560, Stanford arm, and RHINO robot were considered and a DG MV/10000 super mini-computer and an IBM-PC/XT personal computer were used.

  • Since 1960s, in which the computer graphics system first appeared, various graphical techniques have been introduced for regression diagnostics and they have been remarkably developed. In particular, animation, one of the dynamic graphical methods which Cook and Weisberg (1989) proposed helps to show the effect of adding variables or observations to a model, or removing them from a model on the regression results. We present the added variable plots (AVP) with animation, which can be used as an optical tool of understanding the affect of some variables or observations on other variables, and the detrended added-variable plots (DAVP) with animation, through which it is possible to find out whether specific variables or observations have an effect on the nonlinearity of other variables or not.

  • Collision is a brief dynamic event consisting of the close approach of two or more objects or particles resulting in an abrupt change of momentum or exchange of energy because of interaction. Collisions play very important role in computer graphics, computer games and animations fields. Collisions can supply active interaction between cyberspace and real world and give much interests for making nice games so reasonable collision detection algorithms are needed. Collision detection algorithms should satisfy being fast and accuracy. In this paper, we survey the 2D collision detection algorithms between geometric models. We present several methods and system available for collision detection.

  • Ray-tracing algorithm can synthesize photo-realistic image, but its computational cost is high. Fast image synthesis based on ray-tracing is one of the most important topics in computer graphics. There are two methods for high speed ray-tracing. First this paper discusses various load distribution and scheduling of multiprocessor for high sped ray-tracing. Then this paper proposes load distribution strategies based on them, implements and evaluates it on multiprocessor. The experiment results show that the proposed method can solve the unbalanced load problem of dynamic load distribution, and scan line method and dot method among a kind of static load distribution strategies disperse the load efficiently.
