  • Color removal of dyeing wastewater is becoming more important due to intensive limitation on color unit of effluent water, so this study was to investigate an efficient color removal of dyeing wastewater. We found that bittern+iron chloride(II) inorganic coagulant developed by Kabool research center is much higher than any other inorganic coagulants for color removal. Optimum pH of this coagulant was 10.5 and removed more than 90% for color removal efficiency. The results showed that COD and color unit of effluent water was average 60mg/L and 200~250 units when continuous activated sludge test after coagulation with this coagulant has done. From the results of the experiments, the application of bittern+iron chloride(II) inorganic coagulant can save the operating cost of wastewater treatment plants.

  • For the effective operation of complex dyeing wastewater treatment plant, the biodegradability of various dyeing agents were investigated. For experiments in biodegradability, activated sludge from aeration tank of wastewater treatment plant was used. Biodegradability of dyeing agents were compared by measuring the $BOD_5/COD_{Cr}$ ratios and $BOD_5$ removal efficiency. $COD_{Cr}$. removal efficiency of dyeing agents was less than 80% , while $BOD_5$ removal efficiency was less than 60% after of days. Therefore, biodegradation by activated sludge were found very difficult. Judging from this, it is necessary to isolate strains biodegrading dyeing agents in order to operate activated sludge process safely.

  • A great deal of energy is necessary with emission of lots of wastewater in dyeing and finishing process, but heat recovery from wastewater is not introduced since is technology is not developed yet. In order to obtain the method utilizing hot water produced by heat source, that is, dyeing wastewater it was investigated the characteristics of dyeing and finishing process and energy basic unit. Energy basic unit of polyester/cotton (T/C), polyester/rayon (T/R) and polyester dyeing process are higher than that of the other process. The average quantity of wastewater for each dyeing company is 20,470 ton/month, the average temperature of wastewater is about 41$^{\circ}C$. Because the SS solution of wastewater in polyester dyeing process is lower than that of the other process, the effect of corrosion in heat recovery system is low. Since the energy price for 1000 kcal produced by vapor compression heat pump is presumed to be 22.50 won, it is found to be very economic heat recovery system, and its payback is 2.09 years for the factory with LNG boiler.

  • Oxygen uptake rate (OUR) was used as an indicator of microbial activity. In this study OUR at dyeing wastewater in the pilot plant was monitored to examine biological activity. Correlation between inlet COD concentration and maximum OUR showed that maximum OUR was proportional to inlet COD concentration. Changes in the OUR values reflected the changing waste load in the reactor. Consequently, OUR can be used to estimate biological activity of inlet COD concentration. This study showed that biodegradable COD at dyeing wastewater could be calculated from OUR and yield coefficient. Non-biodegradable COD was able to be calculated from a difference between initial COD concentration and biodegradable COD.

  • For the effective treatment of dyeing-complex wastewater, the most effective chemical coagulation method was studied. For the chemical coagulation of dyeing-complex wastewater, polyferric sulfate, $4Al_2(SO_4)_3$, PAC, ferrous sulfate, ferric sulfate, $FeCl_2$ and lime were used. It was investigated that polyferric sulfate was the most efficient coagulant. The optimal conditions and results for polyferric sulfate include the followings. When initial $COD_{Mn}$ concentration was 600mg/L, the optimal initial pH, dosage of coagulant, dosage of lime and PAA for $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiency were 5, 1,200mg/L, 500mg/L and lmg/L, respectively. The optimal dosage of polyferric sulfate was increased proportionally to the influent $COD_{Mn}$ concentration.

  • This study deals with an investigation on low cost adsorbents locally available n dyeing wastewater treatment of color removal. Peat, bentonite, slag and fly ash were utilized for this study. Considering that low cost adsorbents contained in $SiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ compositions, and coagulants were mainly used aluminate and ferrate in color removal. Color of dyeing wastewater was high removed in peat, berntonite and slag except for fly ash with passed time. It could be known that color removal of peat and slag were increased to pH 4, but was hardly changed with advancing to alkaline. Color intended to be high removed with increasing of agitation speed but to be almost slow after 150rpm. As a result on the experiment of Freundlich adsorption isotherms, adsorption intensity(l/n) appeared to be peat>fly ash>slag>bentonite and adsorption capacity(k) came out peat>bentonite>slag>fly ash. Therefore, if low cost adsorbents substituted for existing adsorbents, peat, bentonite and slag could look forward to an expected economical effect.

  • The main purpose of this work is to investigate the performance of membranes for treatment of dyeing wastewater. The microfiltration (MF) membranes (titania-blended polysulfone & alumina) were prepared. The nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were kindly supplied by the Sae-Han. In order to reuse the wastewater for dyeing, the effluents were treated by the high flux RO and the fouling resistant RO (FRM) membranes. Also, the NF membrane was used for water reuse in rinsing.

  • Genetically engineered strains of Pseudomonas, which could degrade the various aromatic hydrocarbons, were acclimated to the synthetic wastewater with increasing substrate concentration. All of the tested strains except KUD101 showed 70-90% of the COD removal efficiencies. Acclimated strains, Pseudomonas putida KUD106, KUD107 and KUD108 were inoculated into the ordinary activated sludge and these sludges were used in the dyeing or alkylbenzene wastewater treatment system. In the case of the wastewater containing alkylbenzene compounds, COD removal efficiency was 12-14% higher than that of the ordinary activated sludge, while it was not effective for dyeing wastewater. On the other hand, the floc formation of the activated sludge inoculated with genetically engineered strains was more rapid in both wastewaters tested than that of the activated sludge by the ordinary natural strains.

  • The purposes of this work were suggested and validated the methods of heat recovery from dyeing wastewater exhausted in Sihwa and Banwol dyeing industrial park. We analyzed the present conditions of heat supplies and demands. So it was made a selection of the system combined heat exchanger for waste heat recovery and the high temperature heat pump. We decided the specifications of the heat recovery facilities. After this, economical assessment is performed to this system. The payback periods are within 4 years, 20 years and 5 years in case of K company, S company and A company. In addition, when they are produced the heat of same capacity, quantities of pollutants from used fuels were calculated.

  • In this study, reuse of biologically treated wastewater of denim washing and dyeing industry has been evaluated by membrane technologies. After that experiments were carried out at laboratory scale in textile dyeing unit by using obtained permeate water samples on 100% cotton based raw fabric belonging to examined industry. During membrane experiments, two different UF (UC100 and UC030) and two different NF (NP010 and NP030) were evaluated under alternative membrane pressures. In permeate water obtained on selected samples, conductivity at the range of $1860-2205{\mu}S/cm$, hardness at the range of 60 to 80 mg/L, total color at the range of 2.4 to 7.6 m-1 and COD at the range of 25-32 mg/L was determined. The following analyzes were performed for the dyed fabrics: perspiration fastness, rub fastness, wash fastness, color fastness to water, color fastness to artificial light, color measurement through the fabric. According to analysis results, selected permeate water have no negative impact on dyeing quality. The study showed that membrane filtration gave good performance for biologically treated textile wastewater, and NF treatment with UF pre-treatment was suitable option for reuse of the effluents.
