  • The interaction between berberine and tannin in aqueous solution was investigated spectrophotometerically. The dyeing mechanism of silk fabrics (control and tannin treated silk fabrics) with berberine was based on thermodynamic parameters obtained from equilibrium adsorption experiments. In adsorption spectra of aqueous solution of berberine and tannin mixture two isosbestic points (328nm, 357nm) were found and the mole fraction of reaction of components was 1:1. Initial dyeing rates were increased and the diffusion of dye was more effective by tannin treatment. Without regard to tannin treatment the adsorption isotherm of berberine was the langmuir type except high temperature, $80^\circ{C}$. By tannin treatment the saturation dye uptake was increased, the increase of dye uptake appeared to be a result of entropy change rather than enthalpy change. All these results can be interpreted by the hydrophobic interaction between berberine and silk treated with tannin and it is reasonable to conclude that not only the ionic force, but also the hydrophobic interaction contributes to the binding of berberine and tannin treated silk treated with tannin.

  • Dyeing properties of the colorants extracted from pomegranate hull on silk fabric were investigated. Pomegranate colorants were characterized by FT-IR analysis. Effects of dyeing condition and mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Pomegranate colorants showed high affinity to silk fiber and its isotherm adsorption curve was Langmuir type. Therefore, ionic bond was involved in the adsorption of pomegranate colorants on to silk fiber. Mordants except Fe did not significantly increase dye adsorption. Pomegranate colorants produced mainly yellow color on silk fabric, but the silk mordanted with Fe showed yellow red color. Fastness to washing, perspiration, and rubbing was not improved by mordanting treatment, but light colorfastness was increased by Fe mordant.

  • Santa Barbara Amorphous-15(SBA-15) nanoparticles were utilized as the inexpensive and effective adsorbents to remove methylene blue dye from the aqueous solution.SBA-15 was created by Zhao et al method. Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for the evaluated physical properties of SBA-15. The results of diffraction X-ray indicated that was the crystalline structure for it. Also IR spectroscopy indicated was a silica the whole structure of the groups and SEM image verify the structure of relatively identical particles size of SBA-15. Factors affecting adsorption including the amounts of adsorbent, pH and contact time were investigated by a SBA-15 nanomaterial design. The extent of dye removal enhanced with increasing initial dye concentration and pH from 4 to 10. The higher percentage adsorption were obtained under optimum conditions of variables (sorbent dose of 200 mg/liter, initial MB concentration 10 mg/liter, initial pH of 10 and temperature of $25^{\circ}C$). Maximum adsorption happened after the 2 hour and the kinetic processes of the dyes adsorption were described by applying the pseudo-first-order and the pseudo-second-order and the relatively High correlation with the kinetic Ellovich models. It was found that the pseudo-second-order models kinetic equation described the data of dye adsorption with a good correlation (R2>0.999) which indicated chemisorption mechanism. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models were investigated in conditions of variables (adsorbent dose 0.01 gr/liter, MB concentration 10, 20, 30 mg/liter, pH of 4, 7, 10, contact time 90 min and temperature of $27^{\circ}C$). The adsorption data were represented by Langmuir isotherm model. These values are higher than the adsorption capacities of some other adsorbents that have recently been published in the literature.

  • In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO)/iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic microgels were prepared using a microfluidic approach and the dye adsorption capacity of the microgels was confirmed. The adsorption capacity (qe) of the gels was evaluated by varying the dye concentration, pH, and contact time with the microgels. The dyes used in this work were methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and malachite green (MG), and microgels showed the highest adsorption capacity (191.1 mg/g) in methylene blue. The microgels exhibited the highest adsorption capacity in the dye aqueous solution at pH 10 due to the presence of atomic nitrogen ions (N+) on the dye molecules. The adsorption isotherm studies revealed that the Langmuir isotherm is the best fit isotherm model for the dye adsorption on the microgels, indicative of monolayer adsorption. The kinetic analysis exhibited that the pseudo-second order model fits better than the pseudo-first order model, confirming that the adsorption process is chemisorption. In addition, the magnetic microgels showed good reusability and recovery efficiency. It was confirmed that the adsorption capacity of the gels maintains more than 70% of the initial capacity after 5 times of cycle experiments.

  • To enhance the power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), the surface of titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photoelectrode was modified by hydroxylation treatment with $NH_4OH$ solution at $70^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. The $NH_4OH$ solutions of various concentrations were used to introduce the hydroxyl groups on $TiO_2$ surface. As the concentration of $NH_4OH$ was increased, the short-circuit current density ($J_{SC}$) value and conversion efficiency of solar cells were increased because the amount of adsorbed dye molecules on $TiO_2$ surface was increased. As a result of the surface modification to introduce hydroxyl groups, the concentration of adsorbed dye on the $TiO_2$ surface could be improved up to 32.61% without the changes of morphology, surface area and pore volume of particles. The morphology, the specific surface area, the pore volume and the chemical states of $TiO_2$ surface were characterized by using FE-SEM, $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms and XPS measurements. The amount of adsorbed dye and the performance of fabricated cells were analyzed by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and solar simulator.

  • The near infrared ray camouflage fabric has a near infrared ray reluctance similar to the surrounding environment and has a camouflage effect on the surrounding environment. Synthetic fibers used in military uniforms are difficult to have gastrointestinal function as general commercial dyes, unlike cellulose fibers, which use some commercial vat dyes to impart infrared gastrointestinal function. In this study, we optimized the adsorption pH, temperature and time for NIR dye application for polyester fabrics, and established the optimum concentration for the evaluation of adsorption build-up characteristics. In addition, it is difficult to adsorb it since the polyester material has a dense crystal structure and the NIR dye is bulky. Therefore, a swelling agent used for dyeing meta-aramid fibers with high Tg and high crystallinity was introduced as a separate preparation to increase the affinity to polyester, which is a hydrophobic fiber, to thereby obtain an excellent adsorption rate. As a result of comparing before and after using swelling agent, the adsorption rate difference was 10 times or more when compared with before.

  • Adsorption of brilliant blue FCF dye using coal based the granular activated carbon from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out as a function of the adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models. The results indicate that Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated Freundlich constant (1/n = 0.129~0.212), this process could be employed as an effective treatment method. Adsorption data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations. It was shown that the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation could describe well the adsorption kinetics. The negative Gibbs free energy value (-4.81~-10.33 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy value (+78.59 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

  • Batch adsorption studies including equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption of new fuchsin dye using granular activated carbon were investigated with varying the operating variables such as initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherms. Adsorption equilibrium was mostly well described by Langmuir Isotherm. From the estimated separation factor of Langmuir ($R_L$ = 0.023), and Freundlich (1/n = 0.198), this process could be employed as an effective treatment for the adsorption of new fuchsin dye. Also based on the adsorption energy (E = 0.002 kJ/mol) from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm and the adsorption heat constant (B = 1.920 J/mol) from Temkin isotherm, this adsorption is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption reaction processes were confirmed following the pseudo second order model with good correlation. The intraparticle diffusion was a rate controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters including changes of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. The change of enthalpy (92.49 kJ/mol) and activation energy (11.79 kJ/mol) indicated the endothermic nature of adsorption processes. The change of entropy (313.7 J/mol K) showed an increasing disorder in the adsorption process. The change of free energy found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing the adsorption temperature.

  • Dyeing properties of cotton fabrics with green tea colorants were studied by investigating the effects of dyeing conditions such as colorants concentration. pH dyeing temperature and time on dye uptakes effects of mordats on dye uptakes and color change and effects of cationizing agent on dye uptakes. And various colorfastnesses of dyed fabrics were evaluated for practical use. Green tea colorants showed low affinity to cotton and produced yellowish red color. Freundlich adsorption isotherm was obtained thus it is considered that hydrogen bondings are formed between colorants and cotton. Dye uptake was maximum at pH 5 and decreased as pH increased. Mordants especially Cu and Sn were effective for increasing dye uptake. Dye uptakes were improved remarkably by cationizing. Cationized cotton showed Langumuir adsorption isotherm indicating that ionic bondings were formed between colorants and cationized cotton. While mordanting did not affect lightfastness cationizing affected adversely. Colorfastness of cationized sample was generally inferior to that of mordanted samples.
