  • The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility utilizing Metasequoia(Metasequoia glyptostroboides) cone as a new natural dye resource. Dyeing onto cotton fiber was carried out to study the effect of dyeing conditions and mordanting effect on dye uptake, color change, and colorfastness. FT-IR analysis supported that hydrolyzable tannins were contained in the extracted colorant. Metasequoia cone colorant showed low affinity to cotton fiber and maximum dye uptake was obtained at pH 3.5 showing YR Munsell color. Mordanting improved dye uptake regardless of mordant type, especially Fe($C_5H_{10}FeO_6$) mordant was effective as much as 2 times higher dye uptake comparing with un-mordanted sample. The color of dyed fabric with mordanting showed YR Munsell color except of the Fe($FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) mordanted sample showing Y Munsell color. Colorfastness to rubbing and washing was relatively good, whereas lightfastness of the dyed fabrics was above grade 3/4 except that the dyed samples with Fe mordanting showed grade 2. It is necessary to apply Metasequoia cone colorant onto other fibers, especially protein fibers, for evaluating its efficacy as a new natural dye resource.

  • We studied absorbance of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses by Spectrophotometric method. Used lenses and tinted dye were CR-39 plastic optical lenses and Ons & $Lavas^{(R)}$ Blue, respectively. Absorbance values of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses were obtained from the differences of absorbance values between tinted lenses and CR-30 lenses. Average concentrations of tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses were obtained from the mass differences between tinted lenses and CR-30 lenses. The relationship between absorbance and average concentration for tinted dye absorbed into tinted lenses was also confirmed to follow Beer’s law. The absorption coefficient calculated from the tangent of the calibration curve was determined to be a=0.983 $Lg^{-1}cm^{-1}$.

  • A POM-membrane was fabricated by immobilizing a keggin type polyoxometalate (POM) H5PV2Mo10O40 onto the surface of microporous flat-sheet polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) membrane using a chemical deposition method. The POM-membrane was characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDX to confirm existing of the POM onto the membrane surface. The POM-membrane was used to remove an anionic textile dye (Reactive Black 5 named as an RB5) from aqueous phases with a cross-flow membrane filtration and a batch adsorption system. The dye removal efficiency of the POM-membrane using the cross-flow membrane filtration system and the batch adsorption system was about 88% and 98%, respectively. The influence factors such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial dye concentration were investigated to understand the adsorption mechanism of the RB5 dye onto the POM-membrane. To find the best fitting isotherm model, Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Harkins-Jura isotherm models were used to analyze the experimental data. The isotherm analysis showed that the Langmuir isotherm model was found to the best fit for the adsorption data (R2 = 0.9982, qmax = 24.87 mg/g). Also, adsorption kinetic models showed the pseudo second order kinetic model was found the best model to fit the experimental data (R2 = 0.9989, q = 8.29 mg/g, C0 = 15 ppm). Moreover, after four times regeneration with HNO3 acid, the POM-membrane showed high regenerability without losing dye adsorption capacity.

  • In a research on the practical dye-sensitized solar cell, a study on a large module have preference because module must be able to generate the proper current that is possible to convert electrically. So the parallel connection of dye-sensitized solar cells which outputs a large current easily is essential. However, there is a current loss in a paralle connection of dye-sensitized solar cells and the loss becomes larger according to increasing the number of parallel connection. In this study, we analyzed the cause of the current loss in the parallel connection by using the equivalent circuit analysis. One DSC used in this experiment had an active area $8cm^2$(4.62cm$\times$1.73cm) and it attained a conversion efficiency of 5.43% under 1 sun illumination ($P_{in}$ of 100 mW/$cm^2$) using a solar simulator.

  • With the development of synthetic dyes, excellent dyeing properties and massive production became possible. On the other hand, natural dyeing technology has gradually disappeared. However, the international environmental and human safety requirements of the apparel and textile industry are increasing, and there is a growing interest in safer and more environmentally friendly products. Accordingly, the public's interest in natural dyeing is increasing. To meet these demands, it is first necessary to clarify the stages of production and distribution of natural dyes. It is necessary to evaluate whether the product is a natural dye product and study the suitability of the natural dye product through qualitative and quantitative assessment of the indicator components of the natural dye. Typical of three natural dyes did qualitative and quantitative analysis by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MS. Products dyed using natural dye three products were analyzed, and the presence or absence of detection of each indicator components was confirmed to confirm whether the product was dyed using natural dyes.

  • The effects of boronic acid on the fluoride-selective chemosignaling behavior of a merocyanine dye were investigated. In the presence of phenylboronic acid (PBA), N-methylquinolinium-based merocyanine dye displayed fluoride-selective chromogenic signaling behavior over other commonly coexisting anions in the micromolar concentration range. Signaling is produced by a fluoride-induced displacement of the dye from its complex with PBA, resulting in a significant chromogenic signal for the fluoride ion. This signaling was successfully analyzed using a ratiometric analysis of the UV-vis absorption in response to changes in fluoride ion concentration. A PBA substituted with an electron withdrawing group was found to exhibit a more pronounced signal. Polymer-bound PBA also exhibited useful fluoride-selective signaling behavior.

  • The applicability of the ultrafiltration process for color removal from dye-containing water has been examined in this study. The optimization of major process variables, such as dye concentration, chitosan concentration and transmembrane pressure on permeate flux and color removal efficiency was investigated. To find the most appropriate results for the experiment, the Box-Wilson experimental design method was employed. The results were correlated by a response function and the coefficients were determined by regression analysis. Permeate flux variation and color removal efficiency determined from the response functions were in good agreement with the experimental results. The optimum conditions of chitosan concentration, dye concentration and pressure were 50 mg/l, 50 mg/l and 3 bars, respectively for the highest permeate flux. On the other hand, optimum conditions for color removal efficiency were determined as 50 mg/l of dye concentration, 50 mg/l of chitosan concentration and 1 bar of pressure.

  • The enhancement of the solar energy conversion efficiency into the electrical energy by the dye sensitization with a photoelectrochemical cell was studied. The magnitude of the rose bengal sensitized photocurrent containing the supersensitizer, thiourea was five times greater than that in the absence of thiourea. It was observed, however, that the long time span of irradiation causes the decrease in the photocurrent. Spectroscopic analysis of the dye solution showed that the dye molecule was photobleached and the insoluble aggregate which settles down in the solution, was formed as a result of the possible photocatalytic reaction and the disappearance of dye from the solution was the cause of the decreased photocurrent in the sensitization run.

  • We have investigated the output characteristics and optimal conditions of a multi-stage amplifier system of Rhodamine 6G dye laser. The parameters in this simulation work were the beam diameter of the dye laser oscillator, the size of dye cell, the dye concentration, the number of stages in the amplifier system, and the pumping energy ratio of each amplifier at given pump energy. As a result, the output energy 10 mJ and the conversion efficiency of 40% in the two stage amplifier system were obtained with the pumping energy of 25mJ and the oscillator energy of 0.01 mJ.
