New technologies or improvement of the existing technologies are required to enhance the efficiency of removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study we attempted to produce and test the activated carbon produced from the refused tea waste for the removal of dyes from wastewater. The objectives of this investigation were to produce activated carbon from refused tea waste by chemical activation, evaluate its performance for the removal of color produced from Acid Yellow 36, and the modeling of its dye removal with the kinetic study. The activation was performed in two steps namely carbonization at $375{\pm}25^{\circ}C$ and chemical activation with HCl at $800^{\circ}C$ under the absence of Oxygen. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed with a textile dye, Acid Yellow 36, at different concentrations (20-80 mg/L). The maximum dye removal (~90%) observed at 80 mg/L dye concentration and it reduced at low dye concentrations. Maximum adsorption (71.97 mg/g) was recorded at 96 h at $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Low pH increased the dye adsorption (pH=2; 78.27 mg/g) while adsorption reduced at high pH levels indicating that the competition occurs in between OH- ions and AY36 molecules for the adsorption sites in RTAC. The Langmuir isotherm model clearly explained the dye adsorption, favorably, by RTAC. Moreover, kinetic studied performed showed that the pseudo second order kinetic model clearly describes the dye adsorption. Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that RTAC can be used for the removal of textile dyes.
The stability of yellow and red dyes prepared from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in aqueous solution and in solid state was investigated. External factors such as light irradiation and temperature on the stability were examined during storage. Changes in absorbance of dye solutions and the color changes of fabrics dyed after long time storage were measured. Also, color reproducibility during storage was investigated by dyeing test on various fabrics. Red colorant in aqueous solution was very unstable to light, resulting that about 40% of absorbance were lost in 12hrs. The absorbance of yellow dye solutions was not decreased within 84hrs. In aqueous medium, yellow dye was much more stable than carthamin. Both dyes are relatively stable for long storage when they are stored in solid state compared to when in aqueous solution. Color changes are marginal in both dyes.
The objective of this study was to examine the infiltration pattern in a soil developed from granite using tile nonfluorescent and nontoxic food dye, Brilliant Blue FCF (C$_{37}$$H_{34}$$N_2$Na$_2$$O_{9}$S$_3$) as the dye tracer. A homogeneous matrix flow occurred in the A horizon with weak, medium granular structure and fingering at the interface of finer-textured A horizon and coarser-textured C horizon. Pegmatitic vein originated from the granite and plant root in C horizon induced preferential flow.w.
The wood veneers were clearly rainbow-colored with natural dyes. As shown through Korean-style jacket with stripes of multi-colors beyond traditional obang colors (red, blue, yellow, black and white colors), eco-friendly coloring methods representing Korean colors familiar from old times could be used nobly by coloring natural wood veneer being raw material of wood products. In terms of industrialization, the study to manifest korean color, substituting chemical stains such as dye and pigment, would be necessary. In order to realize this purpose, the study about economical dyeing materials and characteristics, that is, mordant, dyeing and drying techniques showing environment-friendly coloring and high coloration level ought to be followed. In addition to this, investigating discoloration transition by fading test for interior and exterior uses would have to be carried out.
In order to remove the pollutants effectively in the dye-processing wastewater by chemical precipitation, coagulation and flocculation test was carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferric sulfate was best coagulant for the treatment of mixed dye-processing wastewater. When the Ferric sulfate dosage was 1,100mg/$\ell$, the COD removal rate was very high(50%), and the color was removed very effectively. The COD was decreased relatively well up to 40%, when Alum was dosed as coagulant. But it was difficult to remove the color effectively. Test results about COD removal for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric chloride used were mostly same as those of the Alum used. However, the color removal by the Ferrous sulfate was much better than the case of the Alum or the Ferric chloride. It was found that the COD removal was increased and the sludge yield was decreased by pH control before polymer flocculant addition, during the jar test for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric sulfate as a coagulant.
Recently, composite hollow bushings have been increasingly employed mainly from the various characteristics. Composite bushings are superior to porcelain bushings in several respects, including lighter weight, better anti-pollution and anti-explosion properties, and easer manufacturing. Filament wound GRP tubes which have various winding angle were manufactured by using a filament winding machine. This paper will show some design issues and winding condition for composite bushing. And, results show that the winding condition of composite GRP tubes can be used to improved their bending strength and pressure, For bending and pressure tested, tubes with the hybrid winding pattern show higher strength than those of unit winding pattern. Also, the influence of absorption was evaluated through such as measurement of the dye penetration test and water diffusion test, also aspects of surface state using scanning electron microscopy.
In this study, the deriving optimum conditions for decolorization of Acid Orange II solution was carried using $TiO_2$ advanced oxidation process. After that, on base of the deriving results, the range of dye concentration was estimated. In addition, acute toxicity test was also carried to assess toxicity unit according to decolorization and TOC removal. In case of the blockage of light, 20 mg/L of dye solution, and 0.5 g $TiO_2$, the effect of decolorization at pH 3 was larger than at pH 6 and 10, so it was shown that decolorization is dependent on pH. The use of 5 g $TiO_2$ showed best performance of decolorization, but that of 3 g $TiO_2$ was chosen to optimum condition in considering of economical aspects. Four light sources, sun, fluorescent lamp, BLB lamp, and UV-B lamp, were used and decolorization was 99.4% and 100% at 50 mg/L, 98.6% and 99.7% at 100 mg/L for sun and UV-B lamp, respectively. In spite of the optimum condition of decolorization at pH 3, the evaluation of acute toxicity test showed highly toxic. In conclusion, although the optimum treatment of dye solution is performed, water ecology can be polluted in discharging it into water system. Therefore, it is needed to study of water ecological system with dye water treatment, and it takes all the circumstances into consideration.
This study was performed to evaluate the sealing ability of various retrograde filling materials by using bacterial penetration and dye penetration test. One hundred and forty extracted human teeth with single, straight canals and mature apiece were collected and used for this study. All canals were instrumented using an engine driven Ni-Ti file (ProFile). After removing 3mm from the apex of tooth, a standardized 3mm root end cavity was prepared using an ultrasonic instrument. The 70 teeth were randomly divided into 7 groups : 6 groups for retrograde filling using Super-EBA, ZOE, Chelon-Silver, IRM, ZPC and amalgam. The 7th group was used as a negative control. Nail varnish was applied to all external root surfaces to the level of the reseated root ends to prevent lateral microleakages. The specimens were then sterilized in an ethylene oxide sterilizer for 24 hours. 2 mm of the reseated root was immersed in a culture chamber containing a Tripticase Soy Broth with a phenol red indicator. The coronal access of each specimen was inoculated every 72 hours with suspension of Proteus vulgaris. The culture media were observed every 24hours for color change indicating bacterial contamination. The specimens were observed for 4weeks. The remaining 70 teeth were submitted to a dye penetration test. The canals of all teeth were first sealed with AH26 and obturated using an Obtura II system. Root resection, root end preparation and retrograde filling was performed as above. All specimens were suspended in 2% methylene blue dye for 72 hours before being ion gitudinally split. The degree of dye penetration was then measured using a stereomicroscope at 10 magnification and evaluated. The results were as floows : 1. In the bacterial penetration, the degree of leakage was the lowest in the Super-EBA, followed by, in ascending order, ZOE, Chelon-Silver IRM and ZPC. The amalgam showed highest bacterial leakage of all(p<0.01). 2. In the dye penetration, the degree of microleakage was the lowest in the Chelon-Silver and Super-EBA, followed by, in ascending order, IRM, ZPC. The ZOE and amalgam showed the highest microleakage of all (p<0.05). These results suggested that the eugenol based cement, Super-EBA, have excellent sealing ability as a retrograde filling material.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of smear layer and dentin primers on the sealing ability of root canals. 126 extracted human teeth with single, straight canals and mature apices were used. The Samples were first classified into six groups as follows: presence of smear layer; absence of smear layer; Scotchbond Bond Multi-Purpose; All Bond 2; Mac Bond 2; Clearfil Liner Bond 2. A Positive control was also established. All teeth except the control group were then obturated with thermoplasticized gutta-percha and AH26. Electrochemical and dye penetration technique were later used to evaluate the degree of micro leakage through the root canal. Seventy teeth were then immersed in a 1% potassium chloride solution and An external power supply(DC 10 V) was then applied to the circuit for the electrochemical microleakage test. The degree of Microleakage was determined over period of 28 days before being evaluated. In total, 48 teeth were submitted to the dye infiltration technique. All specimen were suspended in 2% methylene blue dye for 1 week before being longitudinally split. The degree of dye infiltration was measured under a stereo microscope at ${\times}10$ magnification and evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. Apical microleakage increased throughout the test period in all group and one group having a smear layer showed a dramatic increase under electrochemical test (p<0.05). In the group having smear layer, the degree of apical microleakage was the highest, and the micro leakage was much higher than in the smear layer removed group in electrochemical test (p<0.05). Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, All Bond 2, Mac Bond 2 and Clearfil Liner Bond 2 showed lower micro leakage than one group having smear layer. The All Bond 2 and Clearfil Liner Bond 2 treated groups showed the lowest microleakage in electrochemical test (p<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between the experimental groups in dye penetration technique. These results suggested that the removal of the smear layer from root canal and concomitantly the application of dentin primer into root canal could improve the sealing ability of root canal obturation.
Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), which is one of the contending renewable energy sources, have the problem of low efficiency. To improve the efficiency, the fast electron transport and long electron lifetime are required. In this study, one-dimensional sodium hexatitanate, which is expected to have an advantageous structure for electron transports, was synthesized and the feasibility of the material on DSSC was tested. Its physical properties were characterized by the SEM, XRD, and BET method. The dye adsorption and solar cell properties were also characterized. In addition to the expectation of fast electron transport, sodium hexatitanate showed longer electron lifetime: This means sodium hexatitanate can improve the DSSC efficiency. However, it showed low current and voltage because of the low surface area leading to the low amount of dye adsorbed. Therefore, it should be mixed with titanium oxide with high surface area for the optimal performance.
