  • Smart farm is a breakthrough technology that can maximize crop productivity and economy through efficient utilization of space regardless of external environmental factors. This study was conducted to investigate the optimal growth and physiological conditions of Chinese matrimony vine (Lycium chinense) with LED light sources in a smart farm. The light source was composed of red+blue and red+blue+white mixed light using a LED system. In the red+blue mixed light, red and blue colored LEDs were mixed at ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 5:1, and 10:1, with duty ratios varied to 100%, 99%, and 97%. The experimental results showed that the photosynthetic rate according to the types of light sources did not show statistically significant differences. Meanwhile, the photosynthetic rate according to the mixed ratio of the red and the blue light was highest with the red light and blue LED ratio of 1:1 while the water use efficiency was highest with the red and blue LED ratio of 2:1. The photosynthetic rate according to duty ratio was highest with the duty ratio of 99% under the mixed light condition of red+blue+white whereas the water use efficiency was highest with the duty ratio of 97% under the mixed light of red+blue LED. The results indicate that the light source and light quality for the optimal growth of Lycium chinense in the smart farm using the LED system are the mixed light of red+blue (1:1) and the duty ratio of 97%.

  • Conductive metal matrix composite(MMC) material of 30% silicon carbide particulated based on aluminum matrix was machined by die sinking electrical discharge machining(EDM) process according to different current and duty factor for reverse polarity of electrode. Material removal rate(MRR) was examined by process under various operation conditions. The surface morphology was evaluated by surface roughness parameter and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) research. The MRR was suddenly increased over 11 ampere of current, and it was slightly changed over 0.3 of duty factor. The maximum surface roughness of EDMed surface was affected by the duty factor. The SEM photograghs of EDMed surface showed wide recast distribution region of melting materials as increased of current and duty factor.

  • Purpose - This paper describes the use of trade preferences under the EU-Korea free trade agreement (FTA) and empirically examines potential reasons for the less than full use, using data on daily EU imports from Korea at the product level. Design/methodology - We employ a probit model to analyse the relationship between the use of trade preferences on the one hand and variables such as potential duty savings, rules of origin and the characteristics of the good traded (intermediate input or final product) on the other. Findings - The paper finds that EU imports from Korea make good use of trade preferences with an overall preference utilisation rate of close to 90% in 2016, which is up from about 80% in 2012. It further shows that potential duty savings influence preference utilisation positively and that more than one quarter of the observations in our sample made use of preferences under EU-Korea FTA in 2012, despite duty savings standing at €10 or less. Originality/value - The finding that a non-negligible share of observations use preferences even when the duty savings are low has not yet figured in the literature. We further show how preference utilisation rates differ by importing EU Member State and by section of the Harmonised System and estimate the marginal impact of an increase in potential duty savings on the preference utilisation rate by broad product group, which is novel.

  • Because the wage of railway crews is based on the duty hour rather than the working hour, most researches have focused on the balance of duty hour for the crews. In this paper, the structure of duty hour and its relationship to the crew wage are analyzed and some issues are identified. The duty hour consists of several different jobs which are weighed equally in calculating the crew's wage. Also, the difference between the working hour and duty hour is inconsistent with the train routes; i.e., the difference of a long distance train is larger than that of a small or medium distance train. To solve the problems, possible ways to link the duty hour to the wage better are proposed and exemplified

  • Smart farm is a high-tech type of plant factory that artificially makes environmental conditions suitable for the growth of plants and manages them to automatically produce the desired plants regardless of seasons or space. This study was conducted by identifying the effects of Hertz and Duty ratio on the photosynthetic rate of ginseng, a medicinal crop, to find the optimal conditions for photosynthetic responses in smart farms. The light sources consisted of a total of 10 chambers using LED system, with 4 R+B(red+blue) mixed lights and 6 R+B+W (red+blue+white) mixed lights. In addition, the Hertz of the R+B mixed light was treated at 20, 60, 180, 540, 1620 and 4860 hz respectively. The R+B+W mixed light was treated with 60, 180, 540, and 1620 hz. Afterwards, experiments were conducted with the duty ratio of 30, 50, and 70%. As a result, the photosynthetic rate of ginseng according to duty ratio and Hertz was the highest at 60 hz when duty ratio was set to 50%. On the other hand, that was the lowest when the duty ratio was 30% at the same 60 hz. In addition, the photosynthetic rates were highest in the R+B mixed light and R+B+W mixed light at 60 hz. Therefore, the condition with the highest photosynthetic rate of ginseng in smart farms is 60 hz when the duty ratio in R+B mixed light is 50%.

  • There is a growing interest in EH-WSN (energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks) that can solve power problems in wireless sensor networks. In EH-WSN, on-off duty cycling is being studied in order to balance energy harvesting and consumption. However, the urgency of the sensed data and the energy harvesting rate in the environmental monitoring EH-WSN are important factors to determine the network performance. Therefore, it is necessary to control the duty-cycle period according to the importance of the sensed data and the energy harvesting rate in addition to simply maintaining the balance of the power. In this paper, we analyze the problem of on-off duty cycling in EH-WSN for environmental monitoring and propose an adaptive duty-cycle scheduling scheme considering the priority of sensed data and energy harvesting rate, where the priority of sensed data determined by sensed value and changing rate. The performance of scheduling scheme was analyzed by computer simulations.

  • Background: The sunfleck is an important light environmental factor for plants that live under the shade of trees. Currently, the smartfarm has a system that can artificially create these sunfleks. Therefore, it was intended to find optimal light conditions by measuring and analyzing photosynthetic responses of Eutrema japonica (Miq.) Koidz., a plant living in shade with high economic value under artificial sunflecks. Results: For this purpose, we used LED pulsed light as the simulated sunflecks and set the light frequency levels of six chambers to 20 Hz, 60 Hz, 180 Hz, 540 Hz, 1620 Hz, and 4860 Hz of a pulsed LED grow system in a plant factory and the duty ratio of the all chambers was set to 30%, 50%, and 70% every 2 weeks. We measured the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and substomatal CO2 partial pressure of E. japonica under each light condition. We also calculated the results of measurement, A/Ci, and water use efficiency. According to our results, the photosynthetic rate was not different among different duty ratios, the transpiration rate was higher at the duty ratio of 70% than 30% and 50%, and stomatal conductance was higher at 50% and 70% than at 30%. In addition, the substomatal CO2 partial pressure was higher at the duty ratio of 50% than 30% and 70%, and A/Ci was higher at 30% than 50% and 70%. Water use efficiency was higher at 30% and 50% than at 70%. While the transpiration rate and stomatal conductance generally tended to become higher as the frequency level decreased, other physiological items did not change with different frequency levels. Conclusions: Our results showed that 30% and 50% duty ratios could be better in the cultivation of E. japonica due to suffering from water stress as well as light stress in environments with the 70% duty ratio by decreasing water use efficiency. These results suggest that E. japonica is adapted under the light environment with nature sunflecks around 30-50% duty ratio and low light frequency around 20 Hz.

  • A novel structure of phase locked loop (PLL) which has small size and fast locking time with Early-late detector, Duty-rate modulator, and Lock status indicator (LSI) is proposed in this paper. The area of loop filter usually occupying the larger portion of the chip is minimized using a single small capacitor. While the conventional PLL with a single capacitor loop filter cannot work stably, the proposed PLL with two charge pumps works stably because the output voltage waveform of the proposed a single capacitor loop filter is the same as the output voltage waveform of the conventional 2nd-order loop filter. The two charge pumps are controlled by the Early-late detector which detects early-late status of UP and DN signals, and Duty-rate modulator which generates a steady duty-rate signal. Fast locking time is achieved using LSI. It has been simulated and proved by HSPICE in a CMOS $0.18{\mu}m$ 1.8V process.

  • In order to increase network lifetime, duty-cycle MAC protocols which can reduce energy consumption caused by idle listening is proposed for WSNs. In common duty-cycle MAC protocols, each sensor node calculates its duty-cycle interval based on the current amount of residual energy. However, in WSNs with the capability of energy harvesting, existing duty-cycle intervals based on the residual energy may cause the sensor nodes which have high energy harvesting rate to suffer unnecessary sleep latency. Therefore, a duty-cycle scheduling scheme which adjust the duty-cycle interval based on both of the residual energy and the energy harvesting rate was proposed in our previous work. However, since this duty-cycle MAC protocol overlooked the performance variation according to the change of duty-cycle interval and adjusted the duty-cycle interval only linearly, the optimal duty-cycle interval could not be obtained to meet application requirements. In this paper, we propose three methods which calculate the duty-cycle interval and analyse their results. Through simulation study, we verify that network lifetime, end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio can be improved up to 23%, 44% and 31% as compared to the existing linear duty-cycle scheduling method, respectively.

  • This paper studied the effects of anti-dumping measures on the imports to investigate whether the trade restriction effect of an anti-dumping duty is dominant. Our results indicate that a 1% increase in the anti-dumping duties decreases the import of the targeted product by about 0.43~0.51%. The actual statistics, however, show that the total import of the targeted products increased by about 30 percent while an anti-dumping duty was in force. That indicates that an anti-dumping duty is just a temporary import relief. This paper also investigated whether an anti-dumping duty is terminated in the case that the injury would not be likely to continue or recur if the duty were removed. The hazards model estimates show that increase in market share, MFN tariff rate, and dumping margin decrease the hazard of termination of an anti-dumping duty, but the increase in value added increases the hazard of termination. Generally speaking, this result indicates that the WTO member countries have regulated the overuse of an anti-dumping measure. The findings of this paper show that there is a country- and industry-wise heterogeneous characteristic in the effect as well as termination of an anti-dumping duty.
