The gradual desertification in Northeastern China brought about by the industrial development and global warming, has affected the Korean peninsula as evident by the ultrafine dust geographically and seasonally. People with severe respiratory problems, senior citizens and the infants are susceptible to the ill effects of fine dust which could prove fatal to them. Hence, we need to study the root cause of fine dust emergence and the correlation verification between fine dust and its side effects. This study firstly analyzed clean and contaminated areas classified by industrial elements. We utilized air, weather and industrial data in the area. Next, we detected a change of fine dust in terms of weather and climate. We analyzed correlation of air and weather by influence from domestic and neighboring country. The result indicated that China is the culprit of the emergence of fine dust predicament. Consequently, we can prove that fine dust ($PM_{10}$) and ultrafine dust ($PM_{2.5}$) could arise from geographical, seasonal, and pollutant elements. Therefore, we propose the optimum to make countermeasures about fine dust in terms of industry, topography, population and living residence.
EAF's dust has been treated mainly by pyrometallurgical reduction process in rotary kiln furnace to recover valuable metal elements such as Zn and to avoid the disposal of hazardous materials to waste. Recently, hydrometallurgical eletrowinning of zinc from a zinc-amino chloride solution obtained by the leaching of EAF's dust was developed to recover high grade zinc metal from EAF’s dust. But there are some disadvantages in each process such as difficulty of operation condition control and sticking problem in kiln process and low extractability and recovery of zinc owing to insoluble zinc-ferrite in electrowinning process. We propose a new combined process of pyrometallurgical one and hydrometallurgical one to treat EAF's dust efficiently and economically. In this study, ammonium chloride solution leaching of crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust was carried out to find out the efficiency of zinc extraction from it and the possibility for performance of eletrowinning in the proposed process. Effects of various leaching variables ruck as leaching temperature, concentration of leaching solution and leaching time were investigated. And the leaching results of the crude zinc oxide were compared with those of EAF's dust. The extraction percents of zinc in ammonium chloride solution leaching of the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust were above 80% after 60 minutes of leaching under the leaching condition of 4M NH$_4$CI concentration and above leaching temperature of 7$0^{\circ}C$. And the concentrations of zinc in the leached solution were obtained above 50g/$\ell$. The activation energy calculated for zinc extraction in NH$_4$CI leaching was 58.1 KJ/㏖ for EAF's dust and 15.8 KJ/㏖ for the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust.

The author selected 77 dust emissing processes from 71 types of industries which placed in Sasang Industrial Complex in Pusan. The level of total dust was measured as areal concentration and personal exposure concentration by low volume air sampler and personal air sampler, respectively. Collected samples were classified into 5 groups (chemicals and rubber product, metal product, sawmills and wood, foundries and others). Respirable particulate and total dust of areal and personal exposure were analyzed. The results were as follows; 1. All of the respirable dust concentration and total dust of areal and personal concentration were log-normally distributed. 2. Geometric mean of respirable particulate of personal exposure concentration measured $0.55mg/m^3$ in the first group, $0.86mg/m^3$ in the second group, $0.39mg/m^3$ in the third group, $0.81mg/m^3$ in the forth group and $0.52mg/m^3$ in the fifith group. The exceed rates over TLV (thehold limit values) of total dust were 31.3% in the first group, 31.3% in the second group, 70% in the third group, 80% in the forth group and 13.3% in the fifth group. 3. There were singnificant difference between areal and personal exposure concentration and personal exposure concentration was higher than that of area. 4. In the case of high ratio of respirable particulate to total dust, pneumoconiosis incidence was high even though the workshop was opened and emissing dust concentration was low. These findings suggest that it is desirable to measure respirable particulate in environmental assessment of dust emissing workshops.
Environmental factors affect parts of the automobile. When dust particles are embedded, specially, friction and wear of the rubber-seal in automobile chassis system are increased. Increase in friction and wear leads to weakness of component and reduction of mechanical life. In this study, the wear characteristics of rubber-seal for inflow of dust particles are investigated. Silica($SiO_2$) and alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles are used as a dust particle because these particles are main elements of dust particles. The sliding wear tester are used for investigate the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the single dust particle($SiO_2$) is embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of dust particle size is more than that of inflow rate on the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the mixed dust particles are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the wear rate is increased as the rate of alumina that has a bigger hardness is increased. If the mixed dust particles that have different hardness are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of particle size is more than that of particle hardness.
This paper aims to analyze number of Asian dust days and their controlling factors in Korea. Asian dust days, Arctic oscillation index, Antarctic oscillation index and Eurasian snow cover data were used in this study. The number of Asian dust days was increasing after the middle 1980s. The number of Asian dust days was concentrated in April. The number of Asian dust days was increased second half (5.1 days) than first half (3.2 days) of the study period. The number of Asian dust days had positive relationship with winter Arctic oscillation index and Antarctic oscillation index. When the Arctic oscillation index and Antarctic oscillation index is positive, the Asian dust days will be increased. The number of Asian dust days had negative relationship with the Eurasian snow cover. When the Eurasian snow cover will be decreased, the Asian dust days will be increased.
Coal-fired power plants use coal as the main raw material, and when a coal is moved, a dust generation and spontaneous ignition of coal occur. To prevent this, water is sprayed. As a result, wastewater called "coal-dust water" flows out of coal dust and water mixed together, causing environmental pollution. In this study, in order to solve this problem, we developed a natural flocculant that can purify water by aggregating fine dust using chitosan and tried to prove its applicability. It was found that the optimum flocculation concentration was 4 ppm by adding various concentrations of flocculant to the coal-dust water, and it was confirmed that the developed material had very good coal-dust flocculation capacity through permeability and coal-dust removal efficiency. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the flocculant was evaluated through the MTT assay and it was found that there is no toxicity at all. We believe that the flocculant developed in this study can effectively adsorb coal-dust without affecting human and natural ecosystems.

As public concern for fine dust has increased, so too has the interest in fugitive dust. Fugitive dust generated at construction sites, which is then scattered by vehicles moving around the sites, accounts for a significant portion. Small construction sites, which comprise the majority of construction sites, are often not adequately managed, because there are no regulations on fugitive dust for such sites. Therefore, in this study, in order to contribute to the establishment of fugitive dust management regulations on small-scale construction sites and to prepare measures to reduce fugitive dust, we measured and analyzed fugitive dust generated at small-scale building sites in Seoul. The fluctuations of fugitive dust generated at small-scale sites over time were checked, and the relatively low concentration when measured behind fences and railings suggested that fence installation is an appropriate method of reducing fugitive dust.
This study investigated the prediction skill of the Asian dust seasonal forecasting model (GloSea5-ADAM) on the Asian dust and meteorological variables related to the dust generation for the period of 1991~2016. Additionally, we evaluated the prediction skill of those variables depending on the combination of the initial dates in the sub-seasonal scale for the dust source region affecting South Korea. The Asian dust and meteorological variables (10 m wind speed, 1.5 m relative humidity, and 1.5 m air temperature) from GloSea5-ADAM were compared to that from Synoptic observation and European Centre for medium range weather forecasts reanalysis v5, respectively, based on Mean Bias Error (MBE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC) as evaluation criteria. In general, the Asian dust and meteorological variables in the source region showed high ACC in the prediction scale within one month. For all variables, the use of the initial dates closest to the prediction month led to the best performances based on MBE, RMSE, and ACC, and the performances could be improved by adjusting the number of ensembles considering the combination of the initial date. ACC was as high as 0.4 in Spring when using the closest two initial dates. In particular, the GloSea5-ADAM shows the best performance of Asian dust generation with an ACC of 0.60 in the occurrence frequency of Asian dust in March when using the closest initial dates for initial conditions.

Among the many factors that threaten the improvement of public health and quality of life, the proportion of fine dust is not so small, and the kinds and causes of the dust are also diversified. However, the domestic measuring instrument is in the initial stage and the certification system is insignificant. Recognizing the threat of fine dust for a long time, the United States has established a protocol of measurement standards and measurement methods and applied the developed fine dust measuring device authentication system. Through this system, the United States is leading the world's fine dust industry, technology and market. The EPA, FRM and FEM of the fine dust-related protocol were analyzed to reduce the harmful effects of repeated fine dust every year. In addition, light scattering method and spectroscopy method which can measure in real time by measuring method were examined, and the types and characteristics of fine dust measuring instrument of international certification level were analyzed. Finally, development and service plan of the domestic fine dust measuring instrument are presented.

In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of big data-based fine dust anomaly detection machine learning system. The proposed is system that classifies the fine dust air quality index through meteorological information composed of fine dust and big data. This system classifies fine dust through the design of an anomaly detection algorithm according to the outliers for each air quality index classification categories based on machine learning. Depth data of the image collected from the camera collects images according to the level of fine dust, and then creates a fine dust visibility mask. And, with a learning-based fingerprinting technique through a mono depth estimation algorithm, the fine dust level is derived by inferring the visibility distance of fine dust collected from the monoscope camera. For experimentation and analysis of this method, after creating learning data by matching the fine dust level data and CCTV image data by region and time, a model is created and tested in a real environment.
