  • Long-term durability of the reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment deteriorates seriously by the attack of the chloride ion from see water results in corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. Their coating effect is aluminum oxide-isocyanate-based coating material, resistance of chloride penetration, carbonation and freezing and thawing resistance were compared to acryl-based coating material and sealer type o waterproofing material. Aluminum oxide-isocyante-based and acryl-based coating material show higher resistance to chloride penetration and carbonation than the sealer type do waterproofing material and aluminum oxide-isocyanate-based coating resist about 99% of chloride penetration. Resultants to the accelerated test for freezing and thawing, coating concrete show higher resistance than non-coating concrete, respectively.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of frost durability characteristics including freezing-thawing and de-icing salt scaling of the concrete used for gutter of the road. Mixtures were proportioned with the three level of water-binder ratio (W/B), 0.58, 0.53, and 0.48, and two binder compositions corresponding to Type I cement without any supplementary cementitious materials (OPC) and Type I cement with 30% blast-furnace slag replacement (Slag30). Also, two different solutions of calcium chloride and water that contains 0 and 8g of anhydrous calcium chloride in each 100 mL of solution, respectively, were used to evaluate their effect on the frost durability resistance. Test results showed that the Slag30 mixture exhibited higher durability factor and lower mass loss values than those made with OPC. Among the mixture tested in this work, the mixtures (OPC and Slag30) made with a relatively higher W/B of 0.58 exhibited large amount of the de-icing salt scaling regardless of calcium chloride concentration. Finally, the use of slag can be used effectively in terms of economy and frost durability of the concrete designated for gutter.

  • PURPOSES : Durability of concrete is traditionally based on evaluating the effect of a single deterioration mechanism such as freezing & thawing action, chloride attack, carbonation and chemical attack. In reality, however, concrete structures are subjected to varying environmental exposure conditions which often results in multi-deterioration mechanism occurring. This study presents the experimental results on the durability of concrete incorporating air-cooled slag(AS) and/or water-cooled slag(WS) exposed to multi-deterioration environments of chloride attack and freezing & thawing action. METHODS : In order to evaluate durable performance of concretes exposed to single- and multi-deterioration, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, mass ratio and compressive strength measurements were performed. RESULTS :It was observed that multi-deterioration severely affected durability of concrete compared with single deterioration irrespective of concrete types. Additionally, the replacement of cement by AS and WS showed a beneficial effect on enhancement of concrete durability. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that resistance to single- and/or multi-deterioration of concrete is highly dependent on the types of binder used in the concrete. Showing the a good resistance to multi-deterioration with concrete incorporating AS, it is also concluded that the AS possibly is an option for concrete materials, especially under severe environments.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the workability, strengths and durability of polymer concrete using oyster shell that are reclaimed at public shore illegally or leaved on the surroundings of shore to prevent the environmental pollution. We investigated the effect of oyster shell powder (OSP) and $CaCO_3$. on the slump, compressive strength, flexural strength, acid sulfuric and freezing and thawing resistance as a filler of polymer concrete. Modified OSP obtained by crushing oyster shell (less than 0.15 mm size) consists of 60.47 wt% of $SiO_2$ and 39.5 wt% of $CaCO_3$. As a result of slump test by OSP and $CaCO_3$. contents, it is found that slump of specimen used OSP is lower than that used $CaCO_3$. and the more OSP contents are, its slump is increased. Compressive and flexural strength of polymer concrete using OSP are similar or slightly lower than that using $CaCO_3$. In acid sulfuric test for 5 % $H_2SO_4$ and freezing thawing test, regardless of kinds of fillers and contents are not found fatal defects in weight change, falling-off in surface and durability factor.

  • Durability characteristics of controlled low strength material(flowable fill) with high volume fly ash content was examined. The mix proportions used for flowable fill are selected to obtain low-strength material in the 10 to 15kgf/㎥ range. The optimized flowable fill was consisted of 60kgf/㎥ cement content, 280kgf/㎥ fly ash content, 1400kgf/㎥sand content, and 320kgf/㎥water content. Subsequently, durability tests including permeability warm water immersion, repeated wetting & drying, freezing & thawing for high volume fly ash-flowable fill are conducted The test results indicated that flowable fill has has acceptable durability characteristics.

  • This study presents the experimental results of frost durability including resistance to freezing-thawing and surface scaling of concrete. Mixing design was proportioned with the various water-binder ratio between 0.37 and 0.47 and three different binder compositions corresponding to Type I cement without any supplementary cementitious materials(OPC), Type II cement with 50% blast-furnace slag replacement(BFS50), and ternary cement with Type III cement, 15% fly ash, and 35% slag replacement (BFS35%+FA15%). Test results showed that the mixing design with BFS50% and BFS35%+FA15% exhibited higher durability factor than that made with OPC only. Finally, the use of blend cement containing slag can be used effectively in terms of frost durability of the concrete exposed to severe condition under coastal environment like as flying salt, sea water spray, etc.

  • Recently, the corrosion of concrete structures has received great attention related with the deterioration of sea-side structures, such as new airport, bridges, and nuclear power plants. In this regards, many studies have been done on the chloride attack in concrete structures. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration due to chloride only, although actual environment is rather of combined type. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to explore the influences of carbonation and freezing-thawing action to chloride attack in concrete structures. The test results indicate that the chloride penetration is more pronounced than the case of single chloride attack when the carbonation process is combined with the chloride attack. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts. Though the use of fly ash pronounces the chloride ion concentration in surface, amounts of chloride ion penetration into deep region decreases with the use of fly ash. The small reduction of relative dynamic elastic modulus induced from freezing-thawing increases the chloride ion penetration depths much. The present study allows more realistic assessment of durability for such concrete structures which are subjected to combined attacks of both chlorides and carbonation or freezing-thawing but the future studies for combined environment will assure the precise assessment.

  • High durabitiy concrete increasingly sutudied in various countries. This report presents the data on durability related properties such as the chloride ion permeability, the resistance to freezing-thawing, the corrosion of steel and the resistance attack. To promote the actual application of high durability concrete, several series of high durability concrete have been made and applied to actual structures.
