This study was focused on the effect of concrete strength and lateral ties of concrete columns using high-strength concrete. Thirty-six concrete columns with 20cm square cross-section were tested. Experimental parameters included the concrete strength, the distribution of longitudinal bars and the volumetric ratio, yield strength, spacing of lateral ties. From the experiments, we found that: 1) the increasing rate of the strength and ductility of concrete columns caused by confinement of lateral ties was decreasing, as the concrete strength increased. 2) The high volumetric ratio and the reduction of tie spacing had a tendency to enhance the strength and improve the ductility. 3) The high-strength concrete columns required high volumetric ratio of lateral ties to maintain the proper strength and ductility. It was observed that the current AIK design code to specify the maximum tie spacing of high-strength concrete columns led to the poor strength and ductility for seismic design.
With the increase in the use of High-Strength Concrete(HSC) despite the its weakness like brittle characteristic, it is important to improve the performance of HSC columns, nowadays. Therefore, it is common to use higher strength steel in HSC for the purpose of ductility and strength improvement. This experimental study was set up to investigate the inelastic behavior of HSC(700kg/$cm^{2}$) columns subjected to combined axial and repeated lateral loads. Effects of key variables such as the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement, tie configuration and tie yield strength are studied in this research program. Test results indicate that inelastic response of HSC columns improve with proper confinement of core concrete. Increasing the amount of transverse reiuorement results in increased ductility.
In common structural systems, there are some limitations to provide adequate lateral stiffness, high ductility, and architectural openings simultaneously. Consequently, the concept of T-Resisting Frame (TRF) has been introduced to improve the performance of structures. In this study, Configuration of TRF is a Vertical I-shaped Plate Girder (V.P.G) which is placed in the middle of the span and connected to side columns by two Horizontal Plate Girders (H.P.Gs) at each story level. System performance is improved by utilizing rigid connections in link beams (H.P.Gs). Plastic deformation leads to tension field action in H.P.Gs and causes energy dissipation in TRF; therefore, V.P.G. High plastic deformation in web of TRF's members affects the ductility of system. Moreover, in order to prevent shear buckling in web of TRF's members and improve overall performance of the system, appropriate criteria for placement of web stiffeners are presented in this study. In addition, an experimental study is conducted by applying cyclic loading and using finite element models. As a result, hysteresis curves indicate adequate lateral stiffness, stable hysteretic behavior, and high ductility factor of 6.73.
The frame structures investigated in this paper is composed of Concrete encased columns with L-shaped steel section and steel beams. The seismic behavior of this structural system is studied through experimental and numerical studies. A 2-bay, 3-story and 1/3 scaled frame specimen is tested under constant axial loading and cyclic lateral loading applied on the column top. The load-displacement hysteretic loops, ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness and strength degradation are investigated. A typical failure mode is observed in the test, and the experimental results show that this type of framed structure exhibit a high strength with good ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Furthermore, finite element analysis software Perform-3D was conducted to simulate the behavior of the frame. The calculating results agreed with the test ones well. Further analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of parameters including concrete strength, column axial compressive force and steel ratio on the seismic performance indexes, such as the elastic stiffness, the maximum strength, the ductility coefficient, the strength and stiffness degradation, and the equivalent viscous damping ratio. It can be concluded that with the axial compression ratio increasing, the load carrying capacity and ductility decreased. The load carrying capacity and ductility increased when increasing the steel ratio. Increasing the concrete grade can improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the structure, but the ductility of structure decreases slightly.

Strenght and ductility are major factors in the aseismic design of a bridge pier. In spite of good performance in both steel piers have not been used widely due to high cost. But with the filled-in concrete the steel pier have advantages compare to the steel pier only such as improved strength ductility fast construction small section and reasonable cost. In this paper concrete-filled steel piers are tested using quasi-static cyclic lateral load with constant axial load to evaluate the performance. The secondary reinforcement devices such as bolts corner plate and turn buckle are used inside of the piers to improve the ductility with minimum additional cost. Test results shows filled-in concrete and secondary reinforcement devices increase the strength and the ductility of the steel pier.
Strength of reinforced concrete beams can easily be increased by the use of externally bonded CFRP composites. However, the mode of failure of CFRP strengthened beam is usually brittle due to tension-shear failure in the concrete substrate or bond failure near the CFRP-Concrete interface. In order to improve the ductility of CFRP strengthened concrete beams, critical variables need to be investigated. This experimental and analytical research focused on a series of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP composites to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility. The main variables were the amount of CFRP composites, the amount of longitudinal and shear reinforcement, and the effect of CFRP end diagonal anchorage system. Sixteen full-scale beams were investigated. A new design guideline was proposed according to the effects of the above-mentioned variables. The experimental and analytical results were found to be in good agreement.
A seismic strengthening method using Velcro is proposed to improve the seismic performance of columns in RC frame structures. The proposed method was evaluated experimentally using three fabricated RC specimens. Velcro was wrapped around the columns of the RC-frame specimen to prevent concrete spall falling. The reinforcing performance of the Velcro was determined from comparison of results on seismic performance (i.e., strength, displacement, failure mode, displacement ductility capacity and amount of dissipated energy). As the displacement of the reinforced specimens was increased, the amount of dissipated energy increased drastically, and the displacement-ductility-capacity of the reinforced specimens also increased. The final failure mode of RC frame structure was changed. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed seismic strengthening method using Velcro could be used to increase the displacement ductility of RC columns, and could be used to change the final failure mode of RC-frame structures.
High-strength concrete(HSC) is a new construction material with enormous potential. Structures using high-strength concrete are to be coming more and more popular. But high-strength reinforced concrete columns show brittle behavior. It, therefore, is necessary to improve the ductility of HSC members. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ductility and strength of high-strength columns with variable lateral confinement under concentric axial load. Five HSC columns with compressive strength 68㎫ are designed with variable lateral confinements such as carbon fiber sheet(CFS), glass fiber sheet(GFS), and metal lath. Test results indicate that specimen confined by CFS show 11% higher maximum strength, 2.74 times ductility than A specimen using hoop. On comparing with the specimen A and B confined metal lath instead of hoop, strength decrease of 3%, and ductility increase of 1.21 times were observed.
In flexural strength design of normal-strength concrete (NSC) beams, it is commonly accepted that the distribution of concrete stress within the compression zone can be reasonably represented by an equivalent rectangular stress block. The stress block it governed by two parameters, which are normally denoted by ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ to stipulate the width and depth of the stress block. Currently in most of the reinforced concrete (RC) design codes, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ are usually taken as 0.85 and 0.80 respectively for NSC. Nonetheless, in an experimental study conducted earlier by the authors on NSC columns, it was found that ${\alpha}$ increases significantly with strain gradient, which means that larger concrete stress can be developed in flexure. Consequently, less tension steel will be required for a given design flexural strength, which improves the ductility performance. In this study, the authors' previously proposed strain-gradient-dependent concrete stress block will be adopted to produce a series of design charts showing the maximum design limits of flexural strength and ductility of singly-and doubly-NSC beams. Through the design charts, it can be verified that the consideration of strain gradient effect can improve significantly the flexural strength and ductility design limits of NSC beams.
To improve the low ductility and high strain-rate sensitivity in Sn-Bi based solder alloys, the influences of the minor additions of alloying elements (Ag, Mn, In) were investigated. The strain-stress curves of various Sn-40Bi(-X) alloys, including a pre-suggested Sn-40Bi-0.1Cu composition were measured using a tensile testing machine. As a result, the elongation and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) values were compared. The small addition (0.5 wt.%) of Ag significantly enhanced the ductility and high strain-rate sensitivity of the alloys at strain rates of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ mainly due to the increase and refinement of eutectic lamellar structures. The microstructure change increased the area of grain boundaries, thus ameliorating the grain boundary sliding mode. It was also found that Mn is an effective element in enhancing the ductility, especially at the strain rates of $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ The enhancement is likely attributed to the fine and homogeneous microstructure in the alloys containing Mn.
