To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams(4 NU-beams without U-shaped band and 4 U-beams with U-shaped band) are tested. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of carbon fiber sheets and the existence of U-shaped band, etc. The experimental results showed that the strengthening system with U-shaped band controls the premature debonding and provides a more ductile failure mode than the strengthening system without U-shaped band. It can be found from the load-deflection curves that as the number of fiber sheets is increased, the maximum strength and the flexural rigidity is increased. The experimental results are compared with the analytical results of nonlinear flexural behaviors for strengthened RC beam. The proposed analytical method for strengthened beams is proved to be accurate by an experimental investigation of load-deflection curve, yield load, maximum load, and flexural rigidities in the pre- and post-yielding stages.
To investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with glass fiber sheets, 1 control beam and 8 strengthened beams (4 NU-beams without U-shaped band and 4 U-beams with U-shaped band) are tested. The variables of experiment are composed of the number of glass fiber sheets and the existence of U-shaped band, etc. The maximum load was increased by 48% and 34%, and the flexural rigidity by 920% and 880% for NU-beam and U-beam, respectively, compared with those of the control beam. The ductility ratios were 1.43$\sim$2.60 for NU-beam and U-beam. The experimental and analytical results were well agreed.
In order to experimentally investigate the effect of Ni or Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high Si Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile cast Iron (SSF DI), a series of lab-scale sand casting experiment were conducted by changing initial concentration of Ni up to 3.0wt% or Cu up to 0.9wt% in the alloy. It was found that increase in Ni or Cu content in the alloy leads to increase in strength properties and hardness as well as decrease in ductility. The higher Ni or Cu content the SSF DI has, the higher fraction of pearlite was observed. At similar levels of Ni or Cu contents in the alloy, higher pearlite area fraction was observed in the Cu-containing SSF DI than that in the Ni-containing SSF DI. When the effect of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Ni-containing SSF DI was considered, Ni-containing SSF DI was found to have excellent strength and hardness as well as good elongation when the pearlite fraction was controlled less than 10%. As the pearlite fraction in the Ni-containing SSF DI exceeds 10%, however, it shows drastic decrease in elongation. Meanwhile, gradual increase in strength and hardness, and decrease in elongation with respect to increase in pearlite fraction were observed in Cu-containing SSF DI. The different microstructure-mechanical property relationships between Ni-containing and Cu-containing SSF DI were due to the combined effect of the relatively weak pearlite stabilizing effect of Ni compared to that of Cu in high Si SSF DI, and matrix strengthening effect caused by the different amounts of those alloying elements required for similar pearlite fraction.
Steel plate or FRP materials have been typically used for the seismic retrofit of civil infrastructures. In order to overcome the limitation of each retrofitting material, a composite material, which takes advantages from both metal and fiber polymer materials, has been developed. In the study herein, the composite retrofitting material consists of metal part(steel or aluminum) and FRP sheet part(glass or carbon fiber). The metal part can enhance the ductility and the FRP part the ultimate strength. As a preliminary study to investigate the fundamental mechanical characteristics of the metal-FRP laminated composite material this study performed the flexural fracture test with various experimental variables including the number, the angle and the combination of FRP laminates. From the aluminum-FRP composite tests no great increase in flexural strength and flexural toughness were observed. However, flexural toughness of steel-FRP laminate composite was increased so that its behavior can be considered in the retrofit design. In addition, the angle and the kind of fibers should be carefully considered in conjunction with the expected loading conditions.

Steel fibers are recently well recognized for good composite/strengthening materials because of their ductile behavior and good performance on crack control and shear behavior compared to concrete materials. Especially, the great improvement in shear strength by steel fibers led researchers to be involved in many experimental studies. However, our understanding on the complex shear behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) members are still very limited, and the fundamental test data are also not enough. In this study, therefore, 4 SFRC specimens were fabricated and tested, from which the effectiveness of steel fibers as shear reinforcement were evaluated. The test results shows that the shear strength of SFRC members increases as the amount of steel fibers increases.

A convenient method for enhancing the strength and stiffness of existing reinforced concrete beams is to bond adhesively steel plates to their tension faces. However, there is a limit to the applicability of tension face plating as the tension face plates are prone to premature debonding and, furthermore, the addition of the plate reduces the ductility of the beam. An alternative approach to tension face plating is to bond adhesively steel plates to the sides of reinforced concrete beams, as side plates are less prone to debonding and can allow the beam to remain ductile. Debonding at the ends of the side plates due to flexural forces, that is flexural peeling, is studied in this paper. A fundamental mathematical model for flexural peeling is developed, which is calibrated experimentally to produce design rules for preventing premature debonding of the plate-ends due to flexural forces. In the companion paper, the effect of shear forces on flexural peeling is quantified to produce design rules that are applied to the strengthening and stiffening of continuous reinforced concrete beams.
Nowadays, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are widely used for rehabilitation, repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Also, recent advances in concrete technology have led to the production of high strength concrete, HSC. Such concrete due to its very high compression strength is less ductile; so in seismic areas, ductility is an important factor in design of HSC members (especially FRP strengthened members) under flexure. In this study, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and multiple regression analysis are used to predict the curvature ductility factor of FRP strengthened reinforced HSC (RHSC) beams. Also, the effects of concrete strength, steel reinforcement ratio and externally reinforcement (FRP) stiffness on the complete moment-curvature behavior and the curvature ductility factor of the FRP strengthened RHSC beams are evaluated using the analytical approach. Results indicate that the predictions of ANFIS and multiple regression models for the curvature ductility factor are accurate to within -0.22% and 1.87% error for practical applications respectively. Finally, the effects of height to wide ratio (h/b) of the cross section on the proposed models are investigated.

This paper describes an analytical study on seismic performance of domestic reinforced concrete (RC) school building not designed by seismic provision. The seismic index and the seismic performance of the building were evaluated through Japanese standard and Midas Gen, respectively. Seismic index (Is) of the RC school buildings in the X-direction is below 0.4. Based on the seismic index, for seismic-strengthening the building, infill shear wall or steel brace with a capacity of 1,300 kN was used. According to nonlinear static analysis results, the contribution of the seismic-strengthening to the shear resistance of the school building was measured to be greater than 30%. However, as expected, shear strength of school building strengthened with infill wall dropt rapidly after peak load and much narrower ductile behavior range was observed compared to steel brace strengthened building. Also, the building strengthened with steel brace showed 30% larger spectral displacement than that strengthened with infill shear wall. In nonlinear dynamic analysis, for the time history analysis, the maximum displacement showed tendency to decrease as amount of reinforcement increased, regardless of strengthening method. It was recommended that variable soil properties and earthquake record should be considered for improving seismic performance of buildings in seismic zone.

Particle-reinforced metal matrix composites exhibit a strengthening effect due to the particle size-dependent length scale that arises from the strain gradient, and thus from the geometrically necessary dislocations between the particles and matrix that result from their CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and elastic-plastic mismatches. In this study, the influence of the size-dependent length scale on the particle-matrix interface failure and ductile failure in the matrix was examined using finite-element punch zone modeling whereby an augmented strength was assigned around the particle. The failure behavior was observed by a parametric study, while varying the interface failure properties such as the interface strength and debonding energy with different particle sizes and volume fractions. It is shown that the two failure modes (interface failure and ductile failure in the matrix) interact with each other and are closely related to the particle size-dependent length scale; in other words, the composite with the smaller particles, which is surrounded by a denser dislocation than that with the larger particles, retards the initiation and growth of the interface and matrix failures, and also leads to a smaller amount of decrease in the flow stress during failure.
A simple unbonded-type shear strengthening technique for reinforced concrete beams using wire rope units is developed. Six two-span continuous T-beams externally strengthened with wire rope units and an unstrengthened control beam were tested. The main variables investigated were the amount and prestressing force of wire rope units. All specimens had the same geometrical dimension and arrangement of internal reinforcement. Influence of the distribution of vertical stresses in beam web owing to the prestressing force of wire rope units on the diagonal shear cracking load and the ultimate shear capacity of beams tested is presented. Based on the current study, it can be concluded that the amount and initial prestress of wire rope should be limited to be above 2.5 times the minimum shear reinforcement ratio specified in ACI 318-05 and below 0.6 times its own tensile strength, respectively, to ensure the enhancement of shear capacity and ductile failure mode of the strengthened beams. A numerical analysis based on the upper-bound theorem is developed to assess the shear capacity of continuous T-beams strengthened with wire rope units. From the comparisons of measured and predicted shear capacities, a better agreement is achieved in the proposed numerical analysis than in empirical equations recommended by ACI 318-05.
