  • The effect of $0.01{\sim}0.10%$ Sb and Sn on the wear resistance of ductile cast iron was investigated. The hardness was increased with Sb to 0.10%, but the elongation and the impact value were decreased. The tensile strength was increased with up to 0.05% Sb, however decreased with $0.05{\sim}0.10%$ Sb. The hardness and the tensile strength were increased and the elongation was decreased with up to 0.10% Sn. The nodularity of graphite was decreased with above 0.08% Sb however Sn had no effect on that. When the maximum compressive stress was low ($42kg.f/mm^2$), the weigth loss was decreased with increased hardness and when that was high ($54kg.f/mm^2$ and $65kg.f/mm^2$), the weight loss did not depend upon the hardness. The pearlite stabilization with Sb and Sn increased with the wear resistance of ductile cast iron.

  • The effects of Si content on the variation of microstructure and processing window of austempered ductile cast iron were investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.42 and 3.37 wt.% were used. The influence of silicon on the microstructure and processing window of these materials were studied. Austenitizing was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ for 60min and austempering temperature were both $340^{\circ}C$ and $360^{\circ}C$ and austempering time were for 4min upto 119min and for 5min upto 160min respectively. After heat treatment, the evolution of stage I and stage II were performed by optical metallography, XRD, hardness test. The results showed that $t_2$ was delayed as Si contents was increased due to the fact that Si retarded the formation of cementite ($Fe_3C$). The high silicon content promoted the stability of the metastable two-phase combination of austenite and ausferrite.

  • This study was investigated the effect of carbon on the micro-structure and hardness of ductile cast iron roll with internal curing capacity. Spheroidal graphite existed at roll body with rapid cooling, but granular graphite existed at roll neck with slow cooling. The volume fraction of graphite increased at roll body with rapid cooling, That of roll neck with slow cooling decreased, but graphite size increased. The volume fraction of cementite decreased, but volume fraction increased. The cementite size was larger at roll neck than roll body. The hardness was decreased at roll body and roll neck due to volume fraction of cementite. The hardness of roll body was higher than roll neck.

  • It is very important to obtain high performance ductile iron by addition a small amount of alloying elements. In this study, to improve the characteristics of small piston ring casted from ductile iron melt a small amount of boron($0{\sim}0.008wt.%$) that is powerful carbide stabilizer was added in ductile iron, and inspected it`s effects on the microstructure, wear resistance, machinability and mechanical properties. The results obtained from this study are as follows. 1. As the amount of boron increased to 0.04wt.%, the machinability of ductile iron is increased, and if the amount is in excess of 0.04wt.% the machinability is decreased conversely. 2. The wear resistance of ductile iron is improved by boron addition. 3. The recommended ladle addition of boron amount ranges from 0.04wt.% to 0.06wt.% for the use of small piston ring.

  • In this study, the physical properties and fracture characteristics according to the tensile load are evaluated on the materials of the polymeric filler and carbon fiber-based composite sleeve technique. The polymeric filler and the composite sleeve technique are applied to areas where the pipe body thickness is reduced due to corrosion in large-diameter water pipes. First, the tensile strength of the polymeric filler was 161.48~240.43 kgf/cm2, and the tensile strength of the polyurea polymeric filler was relatively higher than that of the epoxy. However, the tensile strength of the polymeric filler is relatively very low compared to ductile cast iron pipes(4,300 kgf/cm2<) or steel pipes(4,100 kgf/cm2). Second, the tensile strength of glass fiber, which is mainly used in composite sleeves, is 3,887.0 kgf/cm2, and that of carbon fiber is up to 5,922.5 kgf/cm2. The tensile strengths of glass and carbon fiber are higher than ductile cast iron pipe or steel pipe. Third, when reinforcing the hemispherical simulated corrosion shape of the ductile cast iron pipe and the steel pipe with a polymeric filler, there was an effect of increasing the ultimate tensile load by 1.04 to 1.06 times, but the ultimate load was 37.7 to 53.7% compared to the ductile cast iron or steel specimen without corrosion damage. It was found that the effect on the reinforcement of the corrosion damaged part was insignificant. Fourth, the composite sleeve using carbon fiber showed an ultimate load of 1.10(0.61T, 1,821.0 kgf) and 1.02(0.60T, 2,290.7 kgf) times higher than the ductile cast iron pipe(1,657.83 kgf) and steel pipe(2,236.8 kgf), respectively. When using a composite sleeve such as fiber, the corrosion damage part of large-diameter water pipes can be reinforced with same level as the original pipe, and the supply stability can be secured through accident prevention.

  • The effect of different kinds of steel scraps, the raw material in the manufacturing of nodular cast iron, on the microstructures and mechanical properties has been investigated Different grades were produced by changing the steel scraps. When nodular graphite cast iron was produced by using Zn rich steel scrap, such as galvanized steel sheet and auto body sheet, mechanical properties were deteriorated due to the decomposition of graphite, so close control must be maintained over this element. Tensile strength and hardness of nodular graphite cast iron which were manufactured by using Sb rich steel scrap were increased while elongation was decreased due to the increased amounts of pearlite within matrix. Mn and Cr contents in the structural steel sheet scrap or malleable iron scrap increased tensile strength and hardness of nodular graphite cast iron by facilitating the formation of pearlite.

  • The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of 3.6wt%C-2.6wt%C ductile cast iron poured into shell stack molds were investigated. The strength and hardness of the specimens obtained from the center layer in the 5-story stack mold were the lowest and those for other specimens were increased with increased distance from the center. The strength and hardness of the specimens obtained from the center layer were decreased with increased number of layers of the shell stack mold. The strength and hardness of the smaller specimens with the diameter of 9.5 mm were higher than those of 17.5 mm. On the other hand, the elongation of the former was lower than that of the latter. The strength and hardness were increased and the elongation was decreased roughly with the increased amounts of manganese and copper added, respectively. The strength and hardness were increased with the incrcased amount of molybdenum added to 0.40wt% and rather decreased with that to 0.80wt%. Those were greatly increased with the increased amount of tin added and the elongation was roughly decreased with it.

  • Non-alloyed and 1.0%Ni alloyed ductile cast iron were cast into the sand mold and metal mold, and finer graphite size was obtained in case of metal mold casting. Direct tempering after casting showed the slight increase of absorbed energy, which is largely due to the relieving of residual stress that is developed during casting. After austempering heat treatment, higher impact energy was obtained in case of metal mold casting than sand mold casting, which is due to the finer graphite size.

  • Fatigue tests were performed to examine the 4 parameter method for specimens prepared by various heat treatment which resulted in different mechanical properties. Obtained main results are as follows. (1) Samples treated by austempering did not show the expected improvement of fatigue limit although hardness and strength increased. This is attributed to the fact that defect sensitivities of materials increase as increasing of hardness and tensile strength, it is also shown that the graphites acting as stress concentration place become larger by austempering heat treatment than by normal annealing. (2) It is very reasonable to predict the fatigue limit of ductile irons with 4 parameter method based on ${\sigma}_{TS}$, $H_v$, ${\Delta}K_{th}$ and ${\sqrt{area}}_{max}$. (3) The half-austempering treatment appeared to be more useful than the full-austempering method to improve the fatigue limit in the spheroidal graphite cast iron with multi defective material.
