  • The reinforcing effects of ductile short-fiber reinforced brittle matrix composites are studied by, measuring flexural strength, fracture toughness and impact energy as functions of fiber volume fraction and length. The parameters of fracture mechanics, K and J are applied to assess fracture toughness and bridging stress. It is found that fracture toughness is greatly, influenced by the bridging stress ill which fiber pull-out is occur. For the reinforcing effects as functions of fiber volume fraction($V_f$ = 1, 2, 3 %) and length(L = 3, 6. 10cm), the flexural strength is maximum at $V_f$ = 1% and both fracture toughness.

  • Critical erosion kinetic energy models for radial/median cracks and lateral cracks in a workpiece are established in this study. We used experimental results to demonstrate that the fracture erosion resistance and erosion machining number could be used to evaluate the brittle fracture resistance and machinability of a workpiece. Erosion kinetic energy models were developed to predict brittle fracture and ductile shear, and a critical erosion kinetic energy model was developed to predict the transition from brittle fracture to ductile shear. These models were verified experimentally.

  • By using the finite element method, the Oyane's ductile fracture integral I was calculated from the histories of stress and strain according to every element and then the forming limit of hydroforming process could be evaluated. The fracture initiation site and the forming limit fer two typical hydroforming processes, tee extrusion and bumper rail under different forming conditions are predicted in this study. For tee extrusion hydroforming process, the pressure level has significant influence on the forming limit. When the expansion area is backed by a supporter and bulged, the process would be more stable and the possibility of bursting failure is reduced. For bumper rail, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by the shape of preforming blank. Due to no axial feeding on the end side of the blank, the possibility of cracking in hydroforming of the bumper rail is influenced by the friction condition more strongly than that of the tee extrusion. All the simulation results show reasonable plastic deformation, and the applications of the method could be extended to a wide range of hydroforming processes.

  • The forming failure of AZ31 alloy sheet during deep drawing processes was predicted by the FEM and ductile fracture criteria. Uniaxial tensile tests of round-notched specimens and FE simulations were performed to calculate the critical damage values for three ductile fracture criteria. The critical damage values for each criterion were expressed as a function of strain rate at various temperatures. In order to determine the best criterion for failure prediction, Erichsen cupping test under isothermal conditions at $250^{\circ}C$ were conducted. Based on the plastic deformation histories obtained from the FE analysis of the Erichsen cupping tests and the critical damage value curves, the initiation time and location of fracture were predicted under bi-axial tension deformation. The results indicate that the Cockcroft-Latham criterion had good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the FE analysis combined with the criterion was applied to another deep drawing process using an irregular shaped blank and these additional results were verified with experimental tests.

  • The loading capacity of engineering structures/components reduces after the initiation and propagation of crack eventually leads to the final failure. Hence, it becomes essential to deal with the crack and its effects at the design and simulation stages itself, by detecting the prone area of the fracture. The phase-field (PF) method has been accepted widely in simulating fracture problems in complex geometries. However, most of the PF methods are formulated with second order continuity theoryinvolving C0 continuity. In the present study, PF method based on fourth-order (i.e., higher order) theory, maintaining C1 continuity has been proposed for ductile fracture simulation. The formulation includes fourth-order derivative terms of phase field variable, varying between 0 and 1. Applications of fourth-order PF theory to ductile fracture simulation resulted in novelty in this area. The proposed formulation is numerically solved using a two-dimensional finite element (FE) framework in 3-layered manner system. The solutions thus obtained from the proposed fourth order theory for different benchmark problems portray the improvement in the accuracy of the numerical results and are well matched with experimental results available in the literature. These results are also compared with second-order PF theory and a comparison study demonstrated the robustness of the proposed model in capturing ductile behaviour close to experimental observations.

  • A study of the damage evolution laws for ductile materials was carried out to predict the ductile fracture behavior of a marine structural steel (EH36). We conducted proportional and non-proportional stress tests in the experiments. The existing 3-D fracture strain surface was newly calibrated using two fracture parameters: the average stress triaxiality and average normalized load angle taken from the proportional tests. Linear and non-linear damage evolution models were taken into account in this study. A damage exponent of 3.0 for the non-linear damage model was determined based on a simple optimization technique, for which proportional and non-proportional stress tests were simultaneously used. We verified the validity of the three fracture models: the newly calibrated fracture strain model, linear damage evolution model, and non-linear damage evolution model for the tensile tests of the asymmetric notch specimens. Because the stress evolution pattern for the verification tests remained at mode I in terms of the linear elastic fracture mechanics, the three models did not show significant differences in their fracture initiation predictions.

  • Several cell models, so-called local approach, have been proposed as engineering approaches to numerically simulate ductile fracture characteristics. In this paper, two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses incorporating both modified GTN and Rousselier models were carried out. Smooth and notched bars and CT25 specimens were assessed for StE460 and DIN22NiMoCr37 materials which were quoted from previous researches. Micro-mechanical parameters used in the assessment were established by fitting the numerical results with the experiments, and J-R curves derived from the simulations were found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental results.
