Effect of Improving Accuracy for Effective Atomic number (EAN) and Relative Electron Density (RED) extracted with Polynomial-based Calibration in Dual-energy CT

  • The purpose of this study was to improve the accuracy of effective atomic number (EAN) and relative electron density (RED) using a polynomial-based calibration method using dual-energy CT images. A phantom composed of 11 tissue-equivalent materials was acquired with dual-energy CT to obtain low- and high-energy images. Using the acquired dual-energy images, the ratio of attenuation of low- and high-energy images for EAN was calibrated based on Stoichiometric, Quadratic, Cubic, Quartic polynomials. EAN and RED were extracted using each calibration method. As a result of the experiment, the average error of EAN using Cubic polynomial-based calibration was minimum. Even in the RED image extracted using EAN, the error of the Cubic polynomial-based RED was minimum. Cubic polynomial-based calibration contributes to improving the accuracy of EAN and RED, and would like to contribute to accurate diagnosis of lesions in CT examinations or quantification of various materials in the human body.

Dual-Sensitivity Mode CMOS Image Sensor for Wide Dynamic Range Using Column Capacitors

  • A wide dynamic range (WDR) CMOS image sensor (CIS) was developed with a specialized readout architecture for realizing high-sensitivity (HS) and low-sensitivity (LS) reading modes. The proposed pixel is basically a three-transistor (3T) active pixel sensor (APS) structure with an additional transistor. In the developed WDR CIS, only one mode between the HS mode for relatively weak light intensity and the LS mode for the strong light intensity is activated by an external controlling signal, and then the selected signal is read through each column-parallel readout circuit. The LS mode is implemented with the column capacitors and a feedback structure for adjusting column capacitor size. In particular, the feedback circuit makes it possible to change the column node capacitance automatically by using the incident light intensity. As a result, the proposed CIS achieved a wide dynamic range of 94 dB by synthesizing output signals from both modes. The prototype CIS is implemented with $0.18-{\mu}m$ 1-poly 6-metal (1P6M) standard CMOS technology, and the number of effective pixels is 176 (H) ${\times}$ 144 (V).

  • In this paper, a dynamic range(DR) extension technique based on a 3-transistor active pixel sensor(APS) and dual image sampling is proposed. The feature of the proposed APS is that the APS uses two or more photodiodes with different sensitivities, such as a high-sensitivity photodiode and a low-sensitivity photodiode. Compared with previously proposed wide DR(WDR) APS, the proposed approach has several advantages, such as no-external equipments or signal processing, no-additional time-requirement for additional charge accumulation, simple operation and adjustable DR extension by controlling parasitic capacitance and sensitivity of two photodiodes. Approximately 16 dB of DR extension was evaluated from the simulation for the situation of 10 times of sensitivity difference and the same size of parasitic capacitance between those two photodiodes.

Image Translation of SDO/AIA Multi-Channel Solar UV Images into Another Single-Channel Image by Deep Learning

  • We translate Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) ultraviolet (UV) multi-channel images into another UV single-channel image using a deep learning algorithm based on conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs). The base input channel, which has the highest correlation coefficient (CC) between UV channels of AIA, is 193 Å. To complement this channel, we choose two channels, 1600 and 304 Å, which represent upper photosphere and chromosphere, respectively. Input channels for three models are single (193 Å), dual (193+1600 Å), and triple (193+1600+304 Å), respectively. Quantitative comparisons are made for test data sets. Main results from this study are as follows. First, the single model successfully produce other coronal channel images but less successful for chromospheric channel (304 Å) and much less successful for two photospheric channels (1600 and 1700 Å). Second, the dual model shows a noticeable improvement of the CC between the model outputs and Ground truths for 1700 Å. Third, the triple model can generate all other channel images with relatively high CCs larger than 0.89. Our results show a possibility that if three channels from photosphere, chromosphere, and corona are selected, other multi-channel images could be generated by deep learning. We expect that this investigation will be a complementary tool to choose a few UV channels for future solar small and/or deep space missions.

몬테칼로 렌더링 노이즈 제거를 위한 듀얼 신경망 구조 설계 (Design of a Dual Network based Neural Architecture for a Cancellation of Monte Carlo Rendering Noise)

  • 본 논문에서는 레이 트레이싱 그래픽에서 사용되는 몬테칼로 렌더링에 포함되는 잡음을 제거하기 위해 개선된 신경망구조를 설계하였다. 몬테칼로 렌더링은 그래픽의 실감을 높이는데 가장 좋은 방법이지만 픽셀마다 수천 개 이상의 빛 효과를 계산해야 하기 때문에 렌더링 처리시간이 급격히 증가하여 실시간 처리에 큰 문제를 갖고 있다. 이 문제를 개선하기 위해 픽셀에서 사용되는 빛의 수를 줄이게 되는데 이때 렌더링 잡음이 발생하게 되고 이 잡음을 제거하기 위해 다양한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 렌더링 잡음을 제거하는데 딥러닝을 사용하며 특히, 렌더링 이미지를 확산광과 집중광으로 분리하여 이중 신경망 구조를 설계하였다. 설계결과 단일구조 신경망에 비하여 듀얼구조 신경망은 PSNR기준으로 64개 테스트 이미지에 대하여 평균 0.58db가 개선되었으며 reference image에 비하여 99.22% 빛의 수를 줄여 실시간 레이 트레이싱 렌더링을 구현하였다.

머리 MR영상에서 자동화된 뇌영역 추출 (Automated Brain Region Extraction Method in Head MR Image Sets)

  • 본 논문은 인간 뇌의 가시화 및 해석을 위하여 단일 채널 MR영상에서 자동화된 뇌영역 추출 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 쌍곡선 적합을 이용한 자동 문턱치화와 3차원 형태 학적 연산에 의하여 뇌 마스크 볼륨을 생성한다. 쌍곡선 적합은 MR영상의 히스토그램에 곡선을 적합할 때 오차를 줄일 수 있으며, 침식, 연결부위 레이블링, 최대특징 연산, 팽창 등 3차원 형태학적 연산은 문턱치화된 뇌 마스크로부터 생성된 정육각형 볼륨 마스크에 적용된다. 제안한 방법은 SPGR, T1, T2, PD MR영상 세트에서 뇌영역을 자동 추출할 수 있으며, 가장자리 슬라이스에도 적용 가능하고, 영상이 뇌 전체를 포함하지 않아도 된다. 실험에서 20 세트의 MR영상에 적용하여 수동 방법과 비교하여 0.97 이상의 유사도를 보였다.

RGB-D 센서, AR 마커, 색수정 알고리즘을 활용한 매니퓰레이터 투명화 (Transparent Manipulators Accomplished with RGB-D Sensor, AR Marker, and Color Correction Algorithm)

  • The purpose of our sensor system is to transparentize the large hydraulic manipulators of a six-ton dual arm excavator from the operator camera view. Almost 40% of the camera view is blocked by the manipulators. In other words, the operator loses 40% of visual information which might be useful for many manipulator control scenarios such as clearing debris on a disaster site. The proposed method is based on a 3D reconstruction technology. By overlaying the camera image from front top of the cabin with the point cloud data from RGB-D (red, green, blue and depth) cameras placed at the outer side of each manipulator, the manipulator-free camera image can be obtained. Two additional algorithms are proposed to further enhance the productivity of dual arm excavators. First, a color correction algorithm is proposed to cope with the different color distribution of the RGB and RGB-D sensors used on the system. Also, the edge overlay algorithm is proposed. Although the manipulators often limit the operator's view, the visual feedback of the manipulator's configurations or states may be useful to the operator. Thus, the overlay algorithm is proposed to show the edge of the manipulators on the camera image. The experimental results show that the proposed transparentization algorithm helps the operator get information about the environment and objects around the excavator.

멀티모달 다중 카메라의 영상 보정방법 (A Calibration Method for Multimodal dual Camera Environment)

  • 멀티모달 다중 카메라 시스템은 동일 기종이 아닌 적외선 열화상 카메라와 광학 카메라를 이용하여 구성한 스테레오 형태의 시스템이다. 본 논문에서는 열화상 카메라와 광학카메라에서 동시에 인식이 가능한 전용 타겟을 제작하여 스테레오 보정을 진행하였다. 일반적인 스테레오 교정에서는 두 카메라 사이의 내부 파라미터와 외부 파라미터를 이용하여 교정을 진행 하지만, 본 연구에서는 각각의 영상에서 코너점을 검출하고, 검출된 코너점의 좌표를 이용하여 두 영상 사이의 픽셀 오차율, 영상의 회전정도 및 영상의 크기 차이를 구한다. 이를 이용하여 기하학적 변환중 하나인 어파인 변환을 이용하여 보정을 진행 하였으며, 최종적으로 보정된 영상에 매핑되는 영역을 재구성하여 최종 결과 영상을 구했다.

Deriving the Effective Atomic Number with a Dual-Energy Image Set Acquired by the Big Bore CT Simulator

  • Background: This study aims to determine the effective atomic number (Zeff) from dual-energy image sets obtained using a conventional computed tomography (CT) simulator. The estimated Zeff can be used for deriving the stopping power and material decomposition of CT images, thereby improving dose calculations in radiation therapy. Materials and Methods: An electron-density phantom was scanned using Philips Brilliance CT Big Bore at 80 and 140 kVp. The estimated Zeff values were compared with those obtained using the calibration phantom by applying the Rutherford, Schneider, and Joshi methods. The fitting parameters were optimized using the nonlinear least squares regression algorithm. The fitting curve and mass attenuation data were obtained from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The fitting parameters obtained from stopping power and material decomposition of CT images, were validated by estimating the residual errors between the reference and calculated Zeff values. Next, the calculation accuracy of Zeff was evaluated by comparing the calculated values with the reference Zeff values of insert plugs. The exposure levels of patients under additional CT scanning at 80, 120, and 140 kVp were evaluated by measuring the weighted CT dose index (CTDIw). Results and Discussion: The residual errors of the fitting parameters were lower than 2%. The best and worst Zeff values were obtained using the Schneider and Joshi methods, respectively. The maximum differences between the reference and calculated values were 11.3% (for lung during inhalation), 4.7% (for adipose tissue), and 9.8% (for lung during inhalation) when applying the Rutherford, Schneider, and Joshi methods, respectively. Under dual-energy scanning (80 and 140 kVp), the patient exposure level was approximately twice that in general single-energy scanning (120 kVp). Conclusion: Zeff was calculated from two image sets scanned by conventional single-energy CT simulator. The results obtained using three different methods were compared. The Zeff calculation based on single-energy exhibited appropriate feasibility.

대규모 영상처리를 위한 외장 메모리 확장장치의 구현 (Implementation of External Memory Expansion Device for Large Image Processing)

  • 본 연구는 대규모 영상처리를 위한 메모리 확장을 위한 외장 메모리 확장장치 구현에 관련된 내용으로, 이는 영상처리를 위한 그래픽 워크스테이션에 장착되는 PCI(Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express Gen3 x8 인터페이스를 가지는 외장 메모리 어댑터 카드와 외장 DDR(Dual Data Rate) 메모리로 구성된 외장 메모리 보드로 구성되며, 메모리 어댑터 카드와 외장 메모리 보드간의 연결은 광 인터페이스를 통하여 이루어진다. 외장 메모리 억세스를 위해서는 Programmable I/O 방식과 DMA(Direct Memory Access) 방식을 모두 사용할 수 있도록 하여 영상 데이터의 효율적 송수신이 이루어지도록 하였다. 본 연구 결과의 구현은 Altera Stratix V FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array)와 40G 광 트랜시버가 장착된 보드를 사용하였으며, 1.6GB/s의 대역폭 성능을 보여주고 있다. 이는 4K UHD(Ultra High Definition) 영상 한 채널을 담당할 수 있는 규모이다. 향후 본 연구를 계속 진행하여 3GB/s 이상 대역폭을 보이는 연구결과를 보일 예정이다.
