  • Objective: An experiment was conducted to determine the nutrient intake, digestibility, microbial protein synthesis, haemato-biochemical attributes, immune response and growth performance of Gaddi kids fed with oat fodder based basal diet supplemented with either tea seed or tea seed saponin (TSS) extract. Methods: Eighteen male kids, $7.03{\pm}0.16$ months of age and $19.72{\pm}0.64kg$ body weight, were distributed into three groups, $T_0$ (control), $T_1$, and $T_2$, consisting of 6 animals each in a completely randomized design. The kids were fed a basal diet consisting of concentrate mixture and oat fodder (50:50). Animals in group III ($T_2$) were supplemented with TSS at 0.4% of dry matter intake (DMI), and group II ($T_1$) were supplemented with tea seed at 2.6% of DMI to provide equivalent dose of TSS as in $T_2$. Two metabolism trials were conducted, 1st after 21 days and 2nd after 90 days of feeding to evaluate the short term and long term effects of supplementation. Results: The tea seed ($T_1$) or TSS ($T_2$) supplementation did not affect DMI as well as the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre. Nutritive value of diet and plane of nutrition were also comparable for both the periods. However, the average daily gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were improved (p<0.05) for $T_1$ and $T_2$ as compared to $T_0$. The microbial protein supply was also higher (p<0.05) for $T_1$ and $T_2$ for both the periods. There was no effect of supplementation on most blood parameters. However, the triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased (p<0.05) and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol level increased (p<0.05) in $T_2$ as compared with $T_0$ and $T_1$. Supplementation also did not affect the cell mediated and humoral immune response in goats. Conclusion: Tea seed at 2.6% of DMI and TSS at 0.4% DMI can be fed to Gaddi goats to improve growth rate, FCR and microbial protein synthesis.

  • To suggest ecological management plans for invasion of Salix gracilistyla, stepwise environmental sieve of seed dispersal, germination, seedling and juvenile stages were investigated. About 84% of total seeds were released between May 6 and 10. Germination rates significantly declined with decrease of light intensity from 100% to 30% and 0% (p<.001), but above 60% of seeds germinated in all treatments. Difference of germination rates with 0 and 2cm water level was not significant (p = .571). With increase of elapsed time after seed dispersal, germination rates significantly decreased (p<.001), and seed viability was lost within 16 days. Considering both germination rate of seed and survival rate of seedling, survival rate of all dispersed seeds was only 5% when 8 days passed after seed dispersal. All 22-day-old seedlings (height: 1cm) died under flooding of twice level as its height. With decrease of light intensity from 100% to 30%, survival rates of seedling decreased from 90% to 33% (p<.001). In the case of 45-day-old juvenile (height: 20cm), survival rate was 70% under the water level same as its height. There was significant interactive effect of water level and light intensity on the growth of juvenile (height: p<.001, dry weight: p<.01), and survival rate of juvenile was 10% under +20cm-water level and 30%-light intensity condition. The following management plans for invasion of S. gracilistyla are recommended from these results. (1) Dry condition should be maintained at fringe of wetlands for about two weeks at seed dispersal and germination stage (early May~mid May). (2) Water level should be raised to about 5cm at fringe of wetlands for about two weeks at seedling stage (mid May~early June). (3) Water level should be raised to over 20cm at fringe of wetlands for a long time at juvenile stage. Planting trees for shading can raise management effectiveness (mid June~). (4) As water level manipulating is performed as fast as possible for controlling seedling and juvenile, management become easier and more effective.

  • The effects of temperature and day length during seed formation on the morphogenesis of lettuce seed were investigated using two cultivars of MSU 15 and MSU 16. Seed size and weight, and thickness of seed coat o f both cultivars greatly influenced by temperature, but fresh weights and dry matter weights of mother plants were influenced by day length, not by temperature. Interactions between the adaptive polymorphism and climatic conditions were also discussed. Environmental conditions affected the morphology of lettuce seed and this variation of seed morphology resulted from interaction between genetic potentialities and environmental conditions.

  • From September 1994 to April 1996, we observed the suspending time dependant meat increase (dry weight) for oysters at Pukman Bay in Korea. The oysters which suspended in September increased to 5 g in meat weight (dry weight) by January. Ones in June increased rapidly but lessened during summer and this stagnation of meat increase extended to autumn. It took long time to compensate for the loss of meat weight owing to spawning. Oysters suspended in July or August showed low growth or stagnation due to the high water temperature and spawning activities after suspending. However, meat weight showed sudden increasement after December and achieved 5 g at the late farm period. The meat increase of oysters suspended in October or November was very slow during entire growing period. Most of them did not achieved 5 g during farm period. The negative correlation was observed between meat growth and water temperature in September. Also, there was a high correlation between meat growth and chlorophyll-a. It was believed that deficiency of food organisms in the water column lead slow growth in terms of meat growth, particularly right after transplanting seed oysters to the farm. Our study suggests that proper time for transplanting oysters is between August and mid-September. However, the data indicate that good growth of oysters is depending upon amount of food available in the water column.

  • The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to study the response of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) to dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza, poultry litter, nitrogen, and phosphorus on spore population and colonization, nodulation, growth, yield attributes, and yield. The performance of Rhizobium inoculant alone was superior to control in all the parameters of the crop studied. Among the treatments dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of poultry litter performed best in recording number and dry weight of nodules, dry weight of shoots and roots, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, and seed yields of chickpea. The highest seed yield of 3.96g/plant was obtained by inoculating chickpea plants with dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in association with poultry litter. Treatments receiving dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus, Rhizobium inoculant in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus, and that of arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus were similar as that of treatment receiving dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of poultry litter. From the view point of nodulation, growth, yield attributes, and yields of chickpea, dual inoculation of Rhizobium inoculant and arbuscular mycorrhiza along with poultry litter was considered to be the balanced combination of nutrients for achieving the maximum output from cultivation of chickpea in Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soil of Bangladesh.

  • A radioimmunoassay technique has been developed for the determination of abscisic acid (ABA) in crude extracts from germinating rice (Oryza sativa L.). By this method, the changes in ABA level of rice during germination was investigated. The ABA content in rice seeds was found to be 76.5ng/g dry weight in Dong-jin variety and 91.1ng/g dry weight in Sam-gang variety. A rapid decrease in ABA content of rice occurred during germination within 24 hours after seed imbition. The decreasing rate of ABA content during germination showed a significant direct proportion to the imbibition temperature and water-absorbing rate of rice. The decrease in ABA content during germination was found to be caused partly by an elution of ABA from the tissue to the imbibing fluid, and partly by a metabolic conversion of ABA to another compounds. The germination process of rice occurred only when the tissue ABA level decreased below a certain level, and the decreasing rate of ABA level during germination correlated with the ability for germination at low temperature of rice.

  • Objective: A study was conducted to evaluate the varietal differences among faba bean straws and also to assess the potentials of faba bean straws supplemented with concentrate fed at the rate 70% straws and 30% concentrate mixture on feed intake, digestibility, body weight gain and carcass characteristics of the animals. Methods: Forty yearling Arsi-Bale sheep with initial body weight of $19.85{\pm}0.29kg$ (mean${\pm}$standard deviation) were grouped in a randomized complete block design into eight blocks of five animals each based on their initial body weight. Straws included in the study were from Mosisa (T1M), Walki (T2W), Degaga (T3D), Shallo (T4S), and local (T5L) varieties of faba bean and concentrate (2:1 ratio of wheat bran to "noug" seed cake). The experiment consisted of seven days of digestibility and 90 days of feeding trials followed by evaluation of carcass parameters at the end. Results: Local variety had lower (p<0.05) in grain and straw yield compared to improved varieties but higher in crude protein, metabolizable energy contents and in vitro organic matter digestibility. The apparent digestibility of dry matter and crude protein of sheep fed Walki and Mosisa straws were higher than (p<0.05) straws from Shallo varieties. Sheep fed Walki straw had greater (p<0.05) dry matter intake, average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency than sheep fed local and Shallo straws. Slaughter body weight and empty body weight were higher (p<0.05) for sheep fed Mosisa and Walki straws as compared to sheep fed Shallo straws. Apart from this, the other carcass components were not affected (p>0.05) by variety of the faba bean straws. Conclusion: There is significant varietal differences between faba bean straws both in quality and quantity. Similarly, significant variation was observed in feed intake, digestibility, body weight gain and feed conversion efficiency among sheep fed different straws of faba bean varieties with concentrate supplement. Based on these results, Walki and Mosisa varieties could be recommended as pulse crop rotation with cereals in the study area.

  • Field experiments were carried out to improve the cultural practice of potato by analysing its tuberization patterns. Tuberization patterns affected by different altitudes was analyzed at two potato cultivation regions, Jinbu (600 m) and Daegwallyung (800 m) using two potato cultivars, 'Superior' and 'Atlantic'. To analyse tuberization patterns affected by different planting time, seed potatoes were planted at every 10 days from April 19 to May 19 in Daegwallyung. Total dry weight was greater in plant grown at the altitude of 800 m than 600 m during the entire growth period and the highest increase was observed at the early growth period, July 6, comparing to other growth period. The total dry weight was the greatest at 110~112 days after planting (DAP) at the altitude of 800 m and 108~111 DAP at 600 m. There was no significant differences between altitudes and between cultivars. Tuber dry weight per plant at the altitude of 600 m was lower than 800 m on July 6 (58 DAP), but it increased rapidly from July 21 (73 DAP). At both altitudes, the increase of tuber dry weight per plant from July 6 to August 8 was higher than the other growth period. The time of growth period at which tuber dry weight per plant was the highest was similar at both altitudes that was 118~125 DAP at the altitude 800 m and 118~124 DAP at the altitude 600 m. Dry weight per tuber at the altitude 800m was higher than 600 m due to the number of tubers per plant. A higher increase of crop growth rate (CGR) was shown at the altitude 600 m on July 6 (58 DAP), comparing to at 800 m. The highest tuber dry weight per plant of each cultivar was shown when the planting time was April 29 for 'Superior' and was April 19 for 'Atlantic'. Both the tuber dry weight of plant and the total dry weight were lower at a later planting time. Dry weight per tuber increased quickly during the period between June 30 to August 8. Tuberization period was shortened as the planting time was delayed.

  • Terminal bud removal has been thought as a useful practical management of soybean cultivation in Korea, and such cultivating method has been recommended till recent times. Many experiments about the effect of bud removal have been made, but it is not certain yet. This study was conducted to determine if source potential and seed yield would be affected by bud removal in 4 determinate soybean varieties. Terminal bud was removed by hand at the 5 trifoliolate stage of growth. Data were collected on leaf area and leaf dry matter weight from 58 to 101 DAP by nearly every 10 days and some agronomic characteristics and seed yield after maturity. Removing the apical bud did not increased leaf area and leaf dry matter. Number of modes and pods per a plant was increased by bud removal, but number of seeds per a pod was decreased, and seed yield was unchanged by such offsets. From the data, we concluded the source potential of soybean plants was not increased by terminal bud removal under the planting density, 22,000 pit/l0a, however it would be a useful way to reduce the lodging or over-growth.

  • Application of phosphate and silicate at the seed bed stage of rice seedlings was investigated to improve nutritional condition and rooting capability at low temperature. The amounts of applied phosphate were 15kg/10a with or without 200 kg/10a of silicate, and 30 kg/10a without silicate. Seeding dates were March 31, April 9 and April 19. The dry weight of the seedlings seeded earlier date under low temperature was lower than that of the seedlings seeded later dates. The application of phosphate and silicate increased the dry weight of newly developed roots after trasplanting, and increased the number of tillers. Therefore, heavy application of phosphate and silicate is recommendable to improve the predisposition of the rice seedlings grown under the low temperature condition for early transplanting.
