  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of the fist harvesting times (vegetative, stem elongation and heading stage) and regrowth periods (20, 30 and 40 days) after the first harvest on dry matter (DM) productivity, crude protein (CP), CP yield and cell wall constituents of gasses during 1987 and 1988. Although the dry matter productivity of grasses at the first was decreased with earlier cutting, the regrowth DM productivity after the first harvest was increased significantly with earlier cutting (p < 0.05). Also the 30 days of regrowth periods was contributed greatly to the DM productivity p <0.05). The percentage of leaf in the leaf: stem ratio was increased with earlier initial harvest and shorter regrowth period after first harvest. The nutritive value of grasses was increased with earlier initial harvest and the 30 days of regrowth period after fist harvest. Based on the results, it is suggested that good grass DM productivity and nutritive value could be achieved by the earlier harvest at first and the regrowth period of 30 days after first harvest in spring.

  • Objective: The study was aimed to investigate the rules of postprandial changes in intestine digesta dry matter (DM) flow and amino acid digestibility of growing pigs fed low-protein (LP) diets made of different starch. Methods: Eight barrows (28.8±2.1 kg) with a T-cannula at the distal ileum were randomly allotted to an 8×3 Youden square design. Treatments included: waxy corn starch LP (WLP); corn starch LP (CLP) and pea starch LP (PLP). Diets were given at 08:00 and 20:00. Digesta samples were collected in six 2-h stages from 08:00 to 20:00. Results: The Cr concentrations of ileal digesta increased and then decreased in WLP and CLP, while increased continuously in PLP as time passed after postprandial (p<0.05). Higher average Cr concentrations (0.78% and 0.84% vs 0.70%; p<0.05) and lower average DM flow (181.1 g/kg and 166.3 g/kg vs 240.3 g/kg; p<0.001) were observed in WLP and CLP, compared with PLP. The apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of most amino acids in WLP and CLP increased compared with that in PLP. No difference in lysine or methionine digestibility was observed. When digesta were collected in 2-h periods, the apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of amino acids did not change over time. When digesta was collected in 4-h periods from 16:00 to 20:00 and 6-h periods from 14:00 to 20:00 (p<0.05), WLP and CLP showed markedly higher amino acid digestibility than PLP Conclusion: High-amylose slowly digested starch can increase the DM flow at the distal ileum and reduce the apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of amino acids of pigs fed LP diets. Compared with waxy corn starch and corn starch, pea starch reduced the digestibility of amino acids in digesta collected after 4 h postprandial.

  • In order to determine the potential for reduction of nitrite levels and ripening period with heat treatment, the effects of ripening period (1-13 days), nitrite level (45-195 ppm), and heat treatment (30-$90^{\circ}C$) on lipolysis, peroxide, TBA, proteolysis, and residual nitrite values of sucuk were investigated using response surface methodology. The ripening period significantly (p<0.01) increased lipolysis, peroxide, TBA, and proteolysis values and decreased residual nitrite values. The effects of additional nitrite levels were found to significantly affect peroxide and residual nitrite values. Significant amounts of the additional nitrite levels were reduced during processing and on the first day of ripening periods.

  • A grid-based hydrological model, CELTHYM, capable of estimating base flow and surface runoff using only readily available data, was used to assess hydrologic impacts caused by land use change on Little Eagle Creek (LEC) in Central Indiana. Using time periods when land use data are available, the model was calibrated with two years of observed stream flow data, 1983-1984, and verified by comparison of model predictions with observed stream flow data for 1972-1974 and 1990-1992. Stream flow data were separated into direct runoff and base flow using HYSEP (USGS) to estimate the impacts of urbanization on each hydrologic component. Analysis of the ratio between direct runoff and total runoff from simulation results, and the change in these ratios with land use change, shows that the ratio of direct runoff increases proportionally with increasing urban area. The ratio of direct runoff also varies with annual rainfall, with dry year ratios larger than those for wet years shows that urbanization might be more harmful during dry years than abundant rainfall years in terms of water yield and water quality management.

  • The Korean trident goby, Tridentiger brevispinis, lives in adverse habitats that can easily become hypoxic due to low precipitation, regional dry periods, and high amounts of solar radiation. Histological and morphometric studies revealed the goby's specialized skin (35.4-150.0㎛ in thickness), consisting of an epidermis and dermis. The thicker epidermis comprises an outermost surface layer (having taste buds, stratified fattened cells, mucous cells, pigment cells, and stratified polygonal cells), middle layer (having stratified polygonal cells), and stratum germinativum (stratified columnar cells). In particular, the dermis has scales, well-developed vascularization, and a few blood capillaries just above the basement membrane, and a reduced diffusion distance was present in the lateral body. Consequently, adaptations such as thicker epidermis, well-developed vascularization, few blood capillaries, and a reduced diffusion distance may provide cutaneous respiration for survival in poorly oxygenated water during the periodic dry season.

  • Background: Despite the increasing role of dry forests in climate change adaptation and mitigation, these versatile resources has got less attention in the national and regional planning, their potential to enhance the local and national economy has been overlooked, and their contribution to sustainable environmental management has not been recognized. Hence, the objective of this study was to assess the socioeconomic contribution of dry forests and forest products to climate change adaptation in the Liben Woreda, Southern Oromia region of Ethiopia. Methods: For this study, an integrated qualitative and quantitative approach was used. A total of 74 households from villages in the Bulbul, Boba, and Melka-Guba kebeles were randomly selected for the household survey. Results: Results showed that 75% of the respondents in the area indicated that climate change has become their major sources of vulnerability, where drought has been manifested in the form of crops failure and massive death of livestock particularly cattle species. The main income strategies of the study households include livestock, crop, forests such as gum and resins, firewood and charcoal and non-farm activities such as in the form of petty trade, wage and aid. The average total household income was ETB 11,209.7. Out of this, dry forest income constituted 15% of the total income. In addition to using dry forests as rangeland for livestock, the communities collect wood for construction, fodder, traditional medicine, and forest food both for subsistence and for sale. On the other hand, dry forest products could be considered as less vulnerable, rather resilient livelihood strategies to climate- and environment-related risks compared to livestock and crop production such as in the face of drought periods. More than 48.6% of the households argued that the income generated from dry forests increased substantially due to increment in the level of engagement of family members in forest based income activities. On the other hand, 35.8% of the households responded that livestock production, particularly camels and goats, have been making the livelihood strategies of the respondents more resilient indicating the shift made from grazers browsers to livestock. In general trends show that, the trends of livelihood dependency on dry forest were highly increasing indicating the importance of dry forest income in responsse to frequent droughts. Conclusions: Dry forest income has been becoming crucial livelihood staretgy in response to frequent droughts in the study area and hence, it is important to improve the management of dry forests for livelihood enhancement, while also securing their long-term ecological functions.

  • This study is to investigate the recurrence characteristics of wet and dry years using over 200 year records of annual rainfall depth including Chosun Age in Korea. As well as analyzing the correlation structure of the raw data, recurrence trends of wet and dry year has been investigated based on several truncation levels (mean, $mean{\pm}0.25stdv.,\;mean{\pm}O.5stdv.,\;mean{\pm}O.75stdv.,\;mean{\pm}stdv.$). Also the transition probability among wet, dry and normal years has been derived for the same truncation levels. and finally the average return periods based on the steady-state probabilities were obtained. This analysis has been applied to not only the entire data but also partial data set of before- and after-the long dry period around 1900 in order to compare and detect the possible difference between the Chukwooki (an old raingauge invented in Chosun age) and the modem flip-bucket style. As a result, Similar pattern of dry and wet year recurrence has been found, but the return period of extremely dry years after the dry period shown longer than that before the dry period. Assuming that the dry and wet years can be defined as $mean{\pm}$ standard deviations, respectively, the return period of the wet years is shown to be about 5~6 years and that of the dry years about 6~7 years.

  • The fundamental endeavor of this study is to investigate the asymmetric relationship between bunker price and Baltic Dry-bulk Index (hereafter BDI). Previous investigations employ linear form based analysis between oil price and BDI but we develop nonlinear and asymmetric cointegration method, which is properly able to capture the decreasing and increasing periods differently. The empirical results show there is no relationships in linear model (e.g. Engle and Granger's methods). On the contrary, our estimate reveals there is significant long-run relationship with asymmetric framework, which implies the necessity of nonlinear and asymmetric consideration to the bunker price analysis.

  • An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of cellulose concentration in diets containing no phosphorus (P) on the basal endogenous loss (BEL) of P in growing pigs. Twelve barrows (an initial mean body weight = $49.6{\pm}3.2kg$) were individually housed in metabolism crates. Pigs were allotted to 4 experimental diets according to a cross-over design with 12 animals and 2 periods. Four P-free diets were mainly based on corn starch, sucrose, and gelatin, and were formulated to contain 0%, 4%, 8%, or 12% cellulose. Each period consisted of a 5-d adaptation and a 5-d collection period. The marker-to-marker method was used for fecal collection. The feed intake (p<0.05, linear and quadratic) and dry feces output (p<0.01, linear and quadratic) were increased with increasing dietary cellulose concentration. However, P concentration in the feces was decreased (p<0.01, linear and quadratic) with increasing dietary cellulose concentration. There was no significant difference in total P output and the BEL of P as mg per kg DMI (ranging from 157 to 214 mg/kg of dry matter intake) among experimental diets. However, values for the apparent total tract digestibility of energy, dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and calcium were linearly decreased (p<0.01) with increasing cellulose concentration in the diet. In conclusion, dietary cellulose affected the amount of feces and digestibility of energy and nutrients, but did not affect the endogenous loss of P.
