  • This study was carried out to investigate the difference of growth characteristics, yield and extract content between upland and paddy ginseng cultured with 4year-old ginseng in 2003. Although upland ginseng showed larger variation in yield than that of paddy ginseng, the average of it was greater than that of paddy ginseng because it showed better growth of aerial part and higher survival rate than that of paddy ginseng. Moisture content of fresh root was $71.8\%\;(68.5\~73.1\%),\;and\;72.7\%\;(70.2 \~74.9\%)$ on average in upland and paddy ginseng, respectively. Paddy ginseng showed higher hardness in taproot, and higher rate of rusty colored root than that of upland ginseng. The ratio of taproot dry weight in upland ginseng was smaller than that of paddy ginseng, while that of lateral root was larger in upland ginseng. Ratio of marketable root (>60g) to total harvested roots was $13.7\%\;(0.82\~8.0\%)\;and\;7.7\%\;(1.6\~12.6\%)$ in upland and paddy ginseng, respectively. Extract content did not show distinct difference between upland and paddy ginseng, but it showed large variation from $16.1\;to\;25.1\%$ in taproot, and from $24.2\;to\;32.5\%$ in lateral root depanding on the ginseng field examined.

  • This experiment was carried out to know adaptability and forage production and quality of sorghum, sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass and sudangrass hybrids depend on drained condition at paddy field from 2007 to 2008 at Chungnam province. Growth, forage production and quality of sorghum, sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass and sudangrass hybrids showed more well drained condition than poorly drained condition at paddy field. Among growth characteristics, 'SS405' hybrids were somewhat strong for waterlogging, then and good at stem diameter, disease resistance. The dry yield of 'SS405' hybrid at poorly drained paddy field was the highest as 12,938 kg per ha. Fresh yield of poorly drained paddy field was 52.7% compared to that of well drained paddy field. The dry matter yield of poorly drained paddy field was the lower as 66.4% than that of well drained condition. ADF (acid detergent fiber), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), CP (crude protein) and IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility) in poorly drained paddy field were 90.3%, 100.6%, 85.7% and 89.6% level compared to well drained paddy field.

  • This study is to determine seasonal consumptive use of water of a design year during growing period (June-September) for paddy rice in Suwon. To obtain Dry flay Index which is defined as the number of probable dry days occurring at a design year, Slade Partly Un- symmetrical Distribution Function was adopted. Dry Day Index was analysed with 5, 10 and 30 day-term. And each of them was evaluated with recurrence intervals of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 year using 49 years daily rainfall data('35-'83). Their singnificance were tested at 1% level by X$^2$ test. On the basis of these values, Probable Evapotranspiration (ET) which is the daily average ET for the sum of both ET on dry days and ET on rainy days were esti- mated using 5 years daily actual ET data(' 82-' 86). Their Crop Coefficients were also de- termined by the modified Penman equation(1977) proposed by Doorenbos & Pruitt.

  • Methane is the main greenhouse gas released from rice paddy field. Methane from paddy fields accounts for 11 % of the global total methane emission. The global warming potential (GWP) of methane is 25 times more than that of carbon dioxide on a mass basis. It is well known that most effective practice to mitigate methane in paddy is related to the water management during rice growing season and the use of organic matters. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of tillage and cultivation method on methane emission in paddy. Tillage (tillage and no-tillage) and cultivation methods (transplanting and direct seeding) were combined tillage-transplanting (T-T), tillage-wet hill seeding (T-W), tillage-dry seeding (T-D) and no-till dry seeding (NT-D) to evaluate methane mitigation efficiency. Daily methane emission was decreased on seeding treatments (T-W, T-D, NT-D) than transplanting treatment (T-T). Amount of methane emission during rice growing season is highest in T-T ($411.7CH_4\;kg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$) and lowest in NT-D treatment (89.7). In T-W and T-D treatments, methane emissions were significantly decreased by 36 and 51 % respectively compared with T-T. Methane emissions were highly correlated with the dry weight of whole rice plant ($R^2=0.62{\sim}0.93$). T-T treatment showed highest $R^2$ (0.93) among the four treatments. Rice grain yields did not significantly differ with the tillage and cultivation methods used. These results suggest that direct seeding practice in rice production could mitigate the methane emissions without loss in grain yield.

  • This experiment was carried out to know adaptability and forage production and quality of corn hybrid for silage at paddy field of Jeonnam and Cheonan region. The growth, forage production and quality of silage corn in normal condition showed much better than drought condition at paddy field. Among the growth characteristics, 'Kangdaok' hybrids was somewhat strong for drought stress, then and good at stem diameter, drought stress, sugar content, stay green, disease and insect resistance. Fresh yield of 'Kwangpyongok' and 'Kangdaok' hybrid at drought paddy field were the highest as 9,714kg and 9,126 kg/ha per ha among corn hybrids. Among the ten hybrids, dry yield of 'Kangdaok' hybrid at drought paddy field was the highest as 5,548 kg per ha. The result of this study showed that 'Kangdaok' hybrid had good growth characters and forage productivity at drought condition and dry matter yield and TDN yield also were 21.6% and 19.3% level compared with normal paddy field.

  • Dry matter yield of reed canarygrass was investigated in uncultivated rice paddy in Korea, and an attempt was made to estimate the most economic and efficient cutting frequency and rates of nitrogen (N) fertilization, for increased production of reed canarygrass. Total dry matter yields of reed canarygrass per year were 7.4-15.7, 8.5-16.1, and 7.5-13.4 tons/ha in 3, 4, and 5 cutting frequencies, respectively, and over the N treatments of 0-120 kg N/ha/cut. When cut 3 or 5 times annually, the 2nd cut produced the highest proportion of total yield at 38.4 and 33.0%, respectively, when cut 4 times the 3rd cut was highest (38.3%). The ranges of economic N level, limiting N level and efficiency of dry matter production were 243.3-293.0, 387.2, and 14.6 kg DM/kg N, respectively. These indicators were particularly low for the 5 cutting frequency possibly because of the unusually high temperature in the summer season. The best cutting frequency for the dry matter production of reed canarygrass in 1994 was 3 per year because of the higher efficiency of dry matter production.

  • In order to save labor and cost, direct seeding has been considered as an important alternative to the machine transplanting in rice cultivation. Current direct seeding machines for rice in Korea drill irregularly under various operating conditions. This study was conducted to develope a precision seeder which enables the accurate, even-spaced in row placement of rice seeds at uniform depths of 3-4 cm on dry paddy. Design, construction and performance evaluation of the precision seeder were carried out. The tractor rear-mounted type 8-rows precision seeder which performs seeding in addition to fertilizing, ditching, and rotary tilling works on dry paddy was developed. Main components of the seeder were ditcher and leveller, rotary tiller, powered roller type furrow opener, seeding device, powered roller type furrow covering and firming device, hydraulic unit, seeding speed control system, power transmission system, hitch and frame. Ditching, furrow opening, and seed covering and firming performances were good and seeding depths of 2-4 cm could be maintained. Planting accuracies and planting precisions were within 13.6%, and 31.2%, respectively, for planting space of 15 cm, and seeding velocity of 0.5 m/s. These mean variations of average planting space were within 2.1 cm, and 90% of seeds in a hill were seeded within 4.7 cm of hill length, respectively. Error ratios between setting planting space and measured average planting space were shown within 6.7%. Therefore the seeder showed good planting performance up to seeding velocity of 0.5 m/s in field tests. And field capacity of the seeder was about 0.28 ha/hour.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the soil compositions, methane production, the number of methanogens, and the community structure of methanogens in rice paddy soils and dry field farming soils in the summer and autumn seasons. As a result of the analysis of soil compositions, any regular tendency to increase or decrease has not been found in most soil samples due to the change of seasons. It has also been found that more methanogens exist in the rice paddy soil that utilize organic farming practices and emptiness farming practices than in the dry field farming soil. The fewer numbers of methanogens utilizing the acetate have been found than those of the methanogens utilizing the hydrogen or the formate. In an experiment of methane production, the methanes increased for two weeks when the acetate was added, but they continued to increase for seven weeks more when the formate and the hydrogen were added. In the phylogenetic analysis using the mcrA gene, the methanogens had diverse clusters in the rice paddy soil, whereas the methanogens were concentrated only in a few clusters in the dry field farming soil.

  • This study was intended to investigate the temporal and spatial variabilities of dry matter, nitrogen content, chlorophyll of paddy rice and yield caused by different rates of nitrogen application. An experimental field was divided into 45 plots of 3.48 ${\times}$ 12 m in size and application rate of nitrogen varied from 0 to 235% with an increment of 25% based on the standard rate of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O=12-8-8 kg/10a. The measurements were made 8 times every 9-10 days after the transplanting. About 60 days after the transplanting, there exhibited little variabilities in the dry matter caused by different rates of nitrogen application. After that. however, there showed large variabilities and the dry matter increased with the application rate. The nitrogen content of paddy also increased with the application rate but it was inconsistent. After the tillering period, the nitrogen content remained constant. In the early stage of the tillering period the nitrogen content decreased in spite of increase in the dry matter. However. after a certain period of time it increased with the dry matter. There were little variabilities of chlorophyll after the transplanting. However, the SPAD increased with application rate of nitrogen as the paddy grew. After the tillering period SPAD was not affected by the different rates. More yield was obtained at the plots where larger nitrogen content was measured.d.
