  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the selection of regional double cropping system for production of organic forage in southern region of Korea. The species of forage crop used in this experiment were com, sorghum$\times$sudangrass hybrid and japanese millet for summer crops and rye and Italian. ryegrass for winter crops. In organic cultivation condition, sorghum$\times$sudangrass hybrid showed higher DM (dry matter) and TDN (total digestible nutrient) yield than that of com. Dry matter yield of com which cultivated in organic condition decreased to about 35% that of control because of weed. In winter crops, DM and TDN yield of rye is similar to that of Italian ryegrass. We could not find out the difference of nutrient value between each treatments. It means that the amount of nutrient is affected by DM productivity of each crop. The result of this study indicated that sorghum$\times$sudangrass hybrid (summer crop) and rye (winter crop), sorghum$\times$sudangrass hybrid (summer crop) and Italian ryegrass (winter crop) cropping system could be recommended as producing high yield of organic forage in southern region of Korea.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the selection of regional double cropping system for production of organic forage in middle part of Korea. The species of forage crop used in this experiment were corn, $sorghum\;{\times}\;sudangrass$ hybrid and japanese millet for summer crops and rye and Italian ryegrass for winter crops. $Sorghum\;{\times}\;sudangrass$ hybrid showed higher DM (dry matter) and TDN (total digestible nutrient) yield than that of corn. Dry matter yield of corn decreased to 56% that of control because of weed. In winter crops, DM and TDN yield of rye is higher than that of Italian ryegrass. Rye was more adequate to produce organic forage in middle part of Korea. We could not find out the difference of nutrient value between each treatments. It means that the amount of nutrient is affected by DM productivity of each crop. The result of this study indicated that $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid (summer crop) and rye (winter crop) cropping system could be recommended as producing high yield of organic forage in middle part of Korea.

  • This experiment was performed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and dry matter yields of the early maturing cultivars(c.v.'Koolgrazer', '9909,' 'Ol-homil' and 'Jlee select') the medium maturing cultivar(c.v. 'Homil 22') and late maturing cultivars(c.v. 'Danko', 'Kior', 'Amilo' and 'Spooner'.) Seeds were sown on October 3, 2002 and October 8, 2003, respectively at the Livestock Experiment Farm of Keimyung College, Seongju, Kyeongbuk Province. Forage rye was harvested on April 22, 2003 and April 23, 2004, respectively. The height of early maturing cultivars were higher than that of late maturing cultivars at the harvest. Fifty percent heading date of the early maturing cultivar was on April 14 and that of late maturing cultivars were on April 24. In the first year, dry matter(DM) yield of 'Jlee select' was significantly the highest in among all cultivars(p < 0.05). DM yield of early maturing cultivars were higher than that of medium and later maturing cultivars. In the second year, DM yield of '9909' was significantly the highest in among all cultivars(p < 0.05). The early maturing cultivar of 'Koolgrazer' and 'Ol-homil' were similar and 'Jlee select' was low, late maturing cultivar of 'Danko', 'Kior', 'Amilo' and 'Spooner' were lower than early maturing cultivar. According to the results obtained from the study, it is suggested that the early maturing cultivar would be recommendable for fall sown rye for double cropping forage production.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effects of different environmental conditions and cultivation techniques on productivity of grasslands in central and southern area of Korea on 2017 and 2018. Average dry matter yield of grasslands at 10 actual production sites was 7,496 kg/ha. that was ranged from 4,652 to 13,292 kg/ha with least significant difference(LSD) of 1,577kg/ha between grasslands (p<0.05) on 2017. Average dry matter yield of grasslands at 10 actual production sites was 7,914 kg/ha. that was ranged from 3,927 to 12,372 kg/ha with LSD of 1,577kg/ha between grasslands(p<0.05) on 2018. Dry matter(DM) yield of grasslands have positive correlation with soil fertility (p<0.01) but not correlated with rainfall and air temperature among cultivation environments. And also DM yield of grasslands have positive correlation with grassland management techniques(p<0.01). These results suggest that practices of grassland management techniques and improvement of soil fertility are more important than cultivation environments by climate change for increasing the DM yield of grassland in central and southern area of Korea.

  • The harvest schedule for maximum total yield and quality of orchardgrass sward was studied on the basis of theoretical analysis due to Chang's total yield equation. Harvesting at the 10% bloom stage of morphological development of orchardgrass swards was selected as a criterion which provided highest dry matter (DM) yield in conjunction with high and consistent levels of in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVD) and crude protein contents (CP) from harvest to harvest. However, since orchardrass after the 1st cutting do not bloom, the harvest time for the maximum yield and quality of orchardgrass swards is replaced by the three should time of the ceiling leaf area index (LAI).

  • The availability and efficient use of the feed resources in India are the primary drivers to maximize productivity of Indian livestock. Feed security is vital to the livestock management, extent of use, conservation and productivity enhancement. Assessment and forecasting of livestock feed resources are most important for effective planning and policy making. In the present study, 40 years of data on crop production, land use pattern, rainfall, its deviation from normal, area under crop and yield of crop were collected and modeled to forecast the likely production of feed resources for the next 20 years. The higher order auto-regressive (AR) models were used to develop efficient forecasting models. Use of climatic variables (actual rainfall and its deviation from normal) in combination with non-climatic factors like area under each crop, yield of crop, lag period etc., increased the efficiency of forecasting models. From the best fitting models, the current total dry matter (DM) availability in India was estimated to be 510.6 million tonnes (mt) comprising of 47.2 mt from concentrates, 319.6 mt from crop residues and 143.8 mt from greens. The availability of DM from dry fodder, green fodder and concentrates is forecasted at 409.4, 135.6 and 61.2 mt, respectively, for 2030.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of harvesting date and additives on the quality of fall sown oat(Avena sativa L.) silage at the department of animal resources science, college of life resources science, Woosuk University, Wanju &om August, 1997 to March, 1998. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of the harvesting date such as 15 Oct., 23 Oct. and 2 Nov. and different additives as subplots(control, wheat bran, formic acid, lactic acid bacteria, and wilting). The results otained are summarized as follow : The fiesh and dry matter yield of oat were increased by harvesting date delayed, then fiesh and dry matter yield at 2 Nov. were highest as 36,733 and 7,29Okg/ha, respectively. The dry matter content of oat silage was increased significantly by harvesting date delayed(P< 0.05), and DM content of wheat bran and wilting treatment was high at every harvest date. The DM loss was lower in LAB, formic acid and wheat bran treatment, but on significant difference was found among harvesting date(P< 0.05). Average pH of silage harvested at 23 Oct. was lowest as 4.06, and the quality(CP, NDF, ADF, and IVMDM) of oat silage was decreased by harvesting date delayed. The content of acetic acid was no difference among harvesting date, but butyric acid was decreased and lactic acid was increased at 23 Oct. harvest. The result of this study indicate that oat harvested at booting-heading stage of maturity with wilting wheat bran, and LAB could be recommended as producing high quality of oat silage.

  • For simple estimation of pasture production and nutritive value in relation to height of orchardgrass (Ductylis glomumtu L.), the experiment was carried out in a pasture mixture dominated by orchardgrass. The samples of grasses were harvested at the heights of about 30, 40, 50, 70 and 90 cm at the first harvest under different percentage of 100 (grass coverage): 0 (bareland), 80 : 20, 60 : 40, 40 : 60 and 20 : 80, respectively. As the height of orchardgrass was increased, fresh and dry matter (DM) yield were significantly increased. The regression equation between DM yield (Y) and height (X) was Y=ll. 5390 X- 146.60 (r=O. 9414 * * ). Also the higher bareland, the lower pasture production was observed. As the plant height at the first harvest was increased, the contents of crude (C) protein, C. fat, C. ash and relative feed value were markedly decreased. On the other hand, the contents of C. fiber, NFE, NDF. ADF, cellulose and lignin were significantly increased, respectively. The higher height, the lower DM digestibility was found. The equation between digestibility (Y) and height (X) was Y=- 0.2193 X+ 80.99 (r = - 0.9862**). Considering DM yield, digestibility and crude protein, the optimum height of orchardgrass at the first harvest was 59 to 67crn for better pasture production and nutritive value.

  • The objective of this experiment was to suggest the optimum N fertilization level for turf type mixtures {Kentucky bluegrass(Newport) 40% + tall fescue(Rebell Jr.) 20%. + perennial ryegrass(Palmer II) 10% + redtop(Barricuda) 10% + red fescue(Salem) 10% + creeping bentgrass(Crenshaw) 10%}. The field trials were conducted from 1998 to 2000 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality on the N levels(100, 150 and 200kg/ha). With increasing the N level, the average DM yields over 2-years of turf type mixtures significantly increased. The average total DM yields were obtained 6,551, 8,182 and 9,501kg/ha at N 100, 150 and 200kg/ha level(p<0.05), respectively. CP content and DMD were increased, whereas fibrous constituents was decreased(p<0.05), but CPDM and DDM yields were significantly increased with increasing the N levels over 2-year(p<0.05). Based on the results, considering the total DM yield and the quality of herbages which were incidentally produced from turf type mixtures, it can be suggested that the suitable N level was 200kg/ha. But increased N fertilizer usage for general purpose use and expenses on turf type mixtures should be considered in advance.

  • Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of urea treatment of rice and wheat straw on feed intake, dry matter (DM) digestibility and milk yield of lactation buffaloes in their late lactation under farmers' management conditions in the western hills of Nepal during 1995 and 1997. Dry matter intake (DMI) from urea treated rice and wheat straw was not improved significantly (p<0.05) nor the total DMI of the lactating buffaloes was improved significantly. However, feeding urea treated rice straw increased straw DMI by 14.2% and total DMI by 10.63% units over the untreated rice straw. Similarly, the increase in straw and total DMI were 20.18 and 17.40% units over the untreated wheat straw fed animals. Although there was no significant effect of urea treatment of both straw on DM digestibility, it was higher for treated than untreated straw at all locations. An overall increment of 18.1% units for rice straw and 13.3% units for wheat straw was observed. There was a significant effect (p<0.01) of feeding urea treated rice and wheat straw on the milk yield of lactating buffaloes during late lactation under farmers conditions. Post experiment milk yield was also significantly (p<0.05) higher for the animals fed treated straw in both the experiments. Buffalo milk yield was also significantly affected by breed (p<0.01), location (p<0.01) and parity (p<0.01) of the animals. General response of the farmers about the technology and their observed effect on animal performance was also very positive.
