  • Tree leaves have been used as the passive sampler to measure lipophilic PAHs in the atmosphere. This is a convenient and economical method in case of sampling at many regions including the remote places that are not supplied with electric power. But poor results can be obtained if samples are collected carelessly or PAHs concentrations are calculated on the basis of wrong natures of tree leaves. This study was performed to avoid the errors of interpretation that can be induced by these problems when tree leaves are used as a passive sampler of PAHs. Conclusions have been reached as follows: 1) The correlativity was low among the water content, the lipid content, the dry weight and the area of four kinds of tree leaves. According to this, PAHs concentrations calculated per wet weight, dry weight, lipid content and area of tree leaves differed. Therefore, same unit shoud be used to describe concentrations of the pollutants when PAHs concentrations deposited on leaves from atmosphere in the different regions are compared. It is better to decribe the unit as PAHs concentrations per dry weight of leaves for comparison with other data because almost researcher make use of this unit, and the range of fluctuation of the dry weights in several natures of tree leaves was relatively little during growing seasons. 2) Although four kinds of trees(Pinus Koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Evodia daniellii, Kalopanax pictus) had been grown at the same place, PAHs concentrtions deposited on leaves differed respectively. Therefore PAHs concentrations deposited on different kinds of tree leaves should not be compared. It is better to make use of pine needles as the sample because pine trees grow almost over the world, and it is able to collect their samples in winter.

  • Between June and November 2002, the atmospheric concentrations and dry deposition fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Chonju were measured four times each over five days. The total concentration of PAHs in ambient air was $84\;ng/m^3$, with about 90% existing in the vapor phase. Plots of log ($K_p$) vs. log (${P_L}^0$) indicated that PAHs partitioning was not in equilibrium and the particulate characteristics did not change with seasonal variations. The PAHs fluxes to a water surface sampler (WSS) and a dry deposition plate (DDP) were about 14.15 and $1.92\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$, respectively. The flux of the gaseous phase, acquired by subtracting the DDP from the WSS results, was about $12.23\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$. A considerable correlation was shown between the atmospheric concentrations and deposition fluxes in the gaseous phase, but not in the particulate phase, as the fluxes of the particulate phase were dependent on the physical velocity differences of the particulates based on the particle diameter.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate spatial distributions of total deposition. A total number 79 samples were collected at 17 sampling sites from September 1999 to January 2000. Total (=wet+dry) atmospheric depositions were collected by filtered deposition sampler at sampling site (the Western Part of Kyongsangnam Province). In addition, the deposition of soluble and insoluble fraction was also investigated to find a suitable simplified collection method for a long-term monitoring of total deposition. The total depositions were measured soluble amount(mm/month), insoluble amount(kg/km$^2$/month), pH, conductivity(E.C.) and eight ionic components. The spatial distribution of deposition flux was to estimated by using a kringing analysis. The 17 sites mean fluxes of water soluble ionic components; SO$_4$$\^$2-/, Cl$\^$-/, NO$_3$$\^$-/, Na$\^$+/, NH$_4$$\^$+/, K$\^$+/, Mg$\^$2+/, Ca$\^$2+/ were 100.7∼315.6kg/km$^2$/month, 30.1∼234.3kg/km$^2$/month, 64.4∼ 139.4kg/km$^2$/month, 7.5∼68.3kg/km$^2$/month, 10.7∼48.7kg/km$^2$/month, 5.6∼27.9kg/km$^2$/month, 4.5∼17.5kg/km$^2$/month, 27.6∼81.7kg/km$^2$/month, respectively.

  • Pine needle samples(1 year, 2 year, 3 year old) were collected in Seoul and Ansung to investigate the deposition characteristics of atmospheric PCBs depending on exposure periods. Total PCBs concentration of pine needle samples in Seoul and Ansung showed 2,429, 1,198 pg/g DW(dry weight), respectively. PCB homologs concentration of pine needle samples decreased with increasing chlorine-substituted compounds. It showed that higher chlorine- substituted compounds in existing particle phase compared to lower chlorine-substituted compounds existing in gaseous phase were difficult to accumulate lipids of the pine needles samples. The results of regression analysis between exposure periods in the atmosphere and concentration of total PCBs measured in pine needles at two sites showed significant levels($R^2>0.94$, p<0.01), which implies that atmospheric PCBs accumulated on pine needles with positive linearity depending on exposure periods in this study. Therefore pine needle samples can be used as passive air sampler(PAS) for monitoring air contamination for a long time in different sites.
