Atherosclerosis is emerging as one of the major causes of death in Korea as well as Western societies. In the present study; hypocholesterolemic and antiatherogenic effects of the ethanol extract of Allium victorialis Makino was investigated using the conventional rabbit and the cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP)-transgenic mouse model. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by feeding high cholesterol diet to the animals for 30 days and they were then fed with high cholesterol diet containing 0.5% of the A. victorialis extract for additional 30 (or 40) days. In the experiment using rabbits, treatment with the A. victorialis extract significantly decreased plasma total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglyceride levels and lipid peroxidation compared to those in the control group. Total cholesterol contents in the liver and the heart were also significantly decreased. Lipid staining of the aorta isolated from the rabbits showed that treatment with the A. victorialis extract decreased formation of atheromatous plaques on the intima of the aorta. In the experiment employing CETP transgenic mouse model, treatment with the A. victorialis extract decreased the levels of plasma total cholesterol and the tissue triglyceride levels in the heart. These results demonstrated that the ethanol extract of A. victorialis lowered serum cholesterol levels, tissue lipid contents and accumulation of cholesterol in the artery.
For the quality control of crude drug drink preparations, methods for identification of cinnamon components and quantitative determination of cinnamic acid were established. Cinnamon components were identified by TLC with benzene/ethyl acetate (1:1, v/v) on silica gel plate by spraying p-anisaldehyde-sulfuric acid. Cinnamic acid contents were determined at UV 280 nm by HPLC on $\mu$-Bondapak Cls column with acetonitrile/water/acetic acid (40:60:2, v/v). Recoveries of cinnamic acid in three crude drug drink preparations were between 84.1-90.2% compared to the content of the cinnamon extract.

To evaluate the leaf shoots and stem barks of Kalopanax pictus (Araliaceae) as an edible vegetable and a traditional medicinal drug, respectively, the compounds of syringin, liriodendrin, astragalin, quercetin, and kalopanaxsaponins were quantitatively measured by HPLC analysis. The leaf shoot exhibited low contents of syringin, liriodendrin and kalopanaxsaponins but a high chlorogenic acid content, whereas the grown leaves contained very high amounts of kalopananxsaponins. In contrast, the stem bark had very high amounts of syringin and liriodendrin and relatively low kalopanaxsaponins. In particular, the kalopanaxsaponin contents were rapidly increased with monthly variation until October but decreased from September. It was also observed that the leaf shoot contained chlorogenic acid by 30.73 mg/g and the barks showed the concentration of liriodendrin by 20.75 mg/g. These results indicate that high contents of syringin and liriodendrin in the stem bark and high contents of chlorogenic acid in the leaf shoot support scientific bases on the traditional uses of K. pictus as a medicinal drug and a functional food, respectively.

Fourteen commercial beers (eight domestic and six imported) were investigated for their biogenic amine contents. In all products, six biogenic amines, putrescine, cadaverine, tryptamine, ${\beta}-phenylethylamine$, spermine, and tyramine, were detected at different contents among the products, with the spermine content being the highest. Contents of cadaverine and ${\beta}-phenylethylamine$ in domestic beers, and ${\beta}-phenylethylamine$ and tyramine in imported ones were not significantly different. Results indicate that continuous monitoring of biogenic amine levels in commercial beers is needed to maintain chemical safety and qualities.
This study investigated the effect of the structure of the crosslinking agent used in contact lens polymerization on the physical properties and drug dissolution of contact lenses.es Contact lenses were manufactured using 0.3% and 3% of 4 types of crosslinking agents, respectively, and ofloxacin was used as the drug. Contact lenses using hydrophilic crosslinking agents improved water contents and wettability, and the more hydrophilic functional groups, the greater the effect. Contact lenses with a high concentration of crosslinking agent had a low concentration of eluted drug and a longer release time. The cross-linking agent structure of contact lenses had an effect on improving the performance of contact lenses and controlling drug release.
Over the past few decades, new psychoactive substances (NPS) have become prevailing. With the widespread emergence of NPS, phenethylamines (PEAs) have become one of the groups abused most which PEAs, along with other stimulants, make up the majority of stimulants. When determining the NPS, the methods for screening and confirmation are crucial which assesses the reliability of testimony. In this study, a set of GC/MS methods employing two derivatizing agents for determining 76 target PEAs in urine was established and further applied for authentic sample analysis. Five PEAs (N,N-DMA, PMMA, 4-CA, amphetamine, and methamphetamine) with contents over their LLOQs were detected in thirteen of the twenty tested samples. In order to compare the result from the GC/MS methods with the previously established LC-MS/MS method, Cohen's kappa coefficient and McNemar's test were applied for statistical analysis. Perfect agreement between GC/MS and LC-MS/MS techniques for determining target PEAs is demonstrated by the Kappa coefficient for each of the five detected targets.
This study was conducted to establish the standard method for the contents of biotin in milk formulas. To optimize the method, we compared several conditions for liquid extraction, purification and instrumental measurement using spiked samples and certified reference material (NIST SRM 1849a) as test materials. LC-MS/MS method for biotin was established using $C_{18}$ column and binary gradient 0.1% formic acid/acetonitrile, 0.1% formic acid/water mobile phase is applied for biotin. Product-ion traces at m/z 245.1 ${\rightarrow}$ 227.1, 166.1 are used for quantitative analysis of biotin. The linearity was over $R^2=0.999$ in range of $5{\sim}60{\mu}g/L$. For purification, chloroform was used as a solvent for eliminating lipids in milk formula. The linearity was over 0.999 in range of 5~60 ng/mL. The detection limit and quantification limit were 0.10, 0.31 ng/mL. The accuracy and precision of LC-MS/MS method using CRM were 103%, 2.5% respectively. Optimized methods were applied in sample analysis to verify the reliability. All the tested milk formulas were acceptable contents of biotin compared with component specification and standards for nutrition labeling. The standard operating procedures were prepared for biotin to provide experimental information and to strengthen the management of nutrient in milk formula.
The effects of various kind and amount of nitrogen fertilizers on the plant grorth. physiological , yield and extracts. ligustilide, butylidene phthalide contents of curdsdrug "Tou-ki" (AnTelica acutiloba Kitagawa) were investigated in 1989. Five plots variouskind of nitrogen fertilizers. Namely, no nitrogen, urea. ammonium nitrate, ammoniumchloride and control plot of ammonium sulfate. The other, by providing five plotsdifferent composed ratio of nitrogenous fertilizers. containing no nitrogen (No. o) .0.5-fold nitrogen (No s), control plot of 1.0-fold nitrogen(Nl.o). 1.5-fold nitrogen(Nl s)and 2.0-fold nitrogen Na. o), but nitogen was used the ammonium sulfate. The results showedthat the crude drug "Tou-ki" can ammonium chloride be produced in good yield, displayingboth good plant growth and remarkable physiologically-active conditions, and it can beproduced such that the extracts is maximized. Additionally, using methods of gaschromatography (GC) , it was established that ligustilide and butylidene phthalide, majorcomponents in the crude drug was recovered in a good yield from the fully grown plants. The other, the plant growth, the physiologically-active, the weight of whole plant, theyield of extracts and ligustilide, butylidene phthalide were seen to be best at the plotof 2.0-fold nitrogen and according to the increase or decrease of nitrogen decreasedgradually. Therefore. about 2 fold of standard quantity seems to be the most suitablequantity of nitrogen for "Tou-ki" cultivation .uot;Tou-ki" cultivation .ion .
Objectives This study was aimed to offer basic data in long term drug efficacy test using monosodium iodoacetate-induced osteoarthrits model. Methods Sixty male rats were divided into normal and osteoarthritic group. Rats of normal group were injected with 0.1 ml physiological saline, and rats of osteoarthritic group were inected with 0.1 ml monosodium iodoacetate (3 mg/ml) into each left and right knee joint cavities. Gross examination, proteoglycan contents and histopathological examination on the knee joint were performed at 10, 20, 40, and 60 days after injection. Results Grossly, degenerative changes at 10 days, desquamation at 40 days, and ulceration of articular cartilages at 60 days were observed. Proteoglycan contents in articular cartilages were decreased rapidly to 40 days, after than decreased gradually. Osteoarthritic scores were increased rapidly to 20 days, after than increased gradually to 60 days. Conclusions From above results, osteoarthritis model induced by a single intra-articular injection of monosodium iodoacetete is useful model for long term drug efficacy test.
This study was conducted to examine the medication non-adherence and related factors based on medication adherence model of older adults that use polypharmacy. A survey was used to collect data from 190 study participants. Among the 190 subjects, 43.2% did not adhere to their polypharmacy intentionally. The reason for medication non-adherence was listed in order of 'when they felt well on symptoms', 'when it was annoying and uncomfortable', and 'when they felt worse due to medication'. Moreover, the older adults often do not seek for medication information actively. Between adherence and non-adherence groups, while there were differences in gender, type of medication, and experience in drug-related side effects, there were no statistically significant differences in medication information contents and route. This study demonstrates that gender, type of medication, and experience in drug-related side effects should be considered to promote medication adherence. In addition, since the elderly with polypharmacy are rarely actively searching for the contents and route of drug information, the contents of drug information need to be provided by the route preferred by the elderly in order to assist in their decision-making process for polypharmacy.
