  • We developed inkjet based measurement system for micro-droplet behavior on a substrate. By using the inkjet dispenser, a droplet, which is as small as few pico-liter in volume, can be jetted and the amount can be controlled. After jetting, the droplet image on the substrate is acquired from side view camera. Then, droplet profile is extracted to measure droplet volume, contact angle and evaporation characteristics. Also top view image of the droplet is acquired for better understanding of droplet shape. The previous contact angle measurement method has limitations since it mainly measures the ratio of height and contact diameter of droplet on a substrate. Unlike previous measurement system, our proposed method has advantages because various behavior of droplet on substrate can be effectively analyzed by extracting the droplet profile.

  • The objective of the present work is to examine the evaporation shape of deposited droplet on the hot surface. this paper performed the experiments as following conditions: (a) the surface temperature is within the range between $80^{\circ}C$ and $95^{\circ}C$ in the conduction and radiation, (b) droplet diameter is 3.0mm. The results are as follows; while droplet evaporates, droplet's radius is kept changelessly to $70\%$ evaporation time and droplet's shape is kept changelessly after. In case use Constant radius model, about $10\%$ is appearing high than value that time-averaged heat flux applies Inverse heat conduction.

  • The evaporation cooling phenomenon of a droplet containing a surfactant on a heated surface has been studied experimentally. The two kinds of heater modules made of brass and Teflon$^{TM}$ were tested to investigate the cooling characteristics of droplet. Solutions of water containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(0 ppm, 100 ppm, 1000 ppm) were tested in the experiments. The results showed that the contact angle decrease as the concentration of surfactant increases. The tendency did not very with different heated solid materials. As initial temperature of the heated surface becomes high, time averaged heat flux increases and evaporation time decreases with the denser concentration of surfactant. Therefore, water with denser concentration of surfactant could be effective to cool flammable materials. However, the effect of surfactant becomes low as the material temperature is higher than the boiling temperature of water.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation for the effect of radiant heat on the evaporation cooling of water droplet in the process of fire extinguishing. The experiments are mainly focused on the surface temperature, the surface roughness and the droplet diameter. The range of surface temperature is T$_{s}$ =80-14$0^{\circ}C$, surface roughness is R$_{a}$=0.08-0.64 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the droplet diameter is $\Phi$=3.0 mm in the radiation. The results show that the evaporation time is shorter for the larger surface roughness and the volume of droplet increased when the surface roughness is 0.64 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at the surface temperature 127$^{\circ}C$. When the surface roughness is 0.64 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the heat flux is larger than the surface roughness is 0.08 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at the surface temperature 81$^{\circ}C$.>.>.

  • The presented study aims to investigate the colloidal droplet deposition caused by evaporation of the liquid. In the numerical analysis, the evaporation is carried out by using different evaporation function intended to obtain different shape of solute deposition. In the experiment, the colloidal droplets of different solvents are placed on a glass plate and the surface profiles are measured after drying the solvents of the droplets to investigate the effect of the solvent evaporation on the final deposition profile. Comparing the surface profiles obtained under different conditions, the optimum drying conditions of colloidal droplets are, determined to obtain uniform surface profiles. The numerical results showed that ring-shaped deposition of solute was formed at the edge of the droplet due to the coffee stain effect and the height of the ring was reduced at the lower evaporation rate. The experiments showed that the boiling point of a solvent was critical to the surface uniformity of the deposition profile and the mixture of solvents with different boiling points influenced the uniformity as well.

  • In the present study, experiment on the evaporation of pure water droplet on heated surface was conducted, and the evaporative heat transfer coefficients were calculated from experimental results. The pure water droplet of about $10{\mu}l$ was applied onto the heat transfer surface, then the shape of the droplet was analyzed during the evaporation. In addition, the effect of surface roughness on the evaporative heat transfer was also investigated. Experimental results showed that the evaporative heat transfer coefficients increased rapidly along with the increase of surface temperature and the heat transfer coefficients increased with the increase of surface roughness.

  • The present study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of Oxi-nitriding SPCC surface. Moreover, the heat transfer coefficient was examined with respect to surface temperature during droplet evaporation. In fact, the nitriding surface showed significant enhancement for anticorrosion performance compared to bare SPCC surface but the thermal resistance also increased due to the formation of compound layer. From the experimental results, the evaporative behavior of sessile droplet on nitriding surface showed similar tendency with the bare surface. Total evaporation time of sessile droplet on the nitriding surface was delayed less than 5%. The difference in heat transfer coefficient increased with the surface temperature, and the maximum difference was estimated to be around 11% at $80^{\circ}C$ surface. Thus, this nitriding surface treatment method could be useful for seawater heat exchanger industries.

  • This paper reports on breakup characteristics of fuel droplet which includes metal nanoparticles. In order to develop a new injection system for nanoparticle-coated layers overcoming the conventional flame spray system, fundamental experiments were conducted to examine the interaction between a fuel droplet with nanoparticles and the external energy induced by the laser. In the experiments, this study used nickel nanoparticles whose size was under 100 nm to mix with kerosene as the fuel, and utilized a syringe pump and a metal needle to inject a fuel droplet. In particular, the Nd-YAG laser was adopted to give additional energy to the nanoparticles for evaporation of a fuel droplet containing nanoparticles. When the laser energy as 96 mJ was irradiated during the injection, it was observed that such an explosive evaporation occurred to break up a fuel droplet including nanoparticles, making the rapid increase in the ratio surface area to liquid volume. From this work, we suggest the possibility that the laser energy can be used for rapid evaporation of a fuel droplet.

  • The evaporation phenomena of waterr droplet which has sodium acetate trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) as a fire suppression additive were studied. Solutions of sodium salt up to 50% and heated stainless-steel surface were used in the experiment. The evaporation process was recorded using a charge-coupled-device camera at 120 frames per second. The average evaporation rate of the sodium acetate trihydrate soluation was lower than that of pure water at a given surface temperature and decreased with the concentration increase due to the precipitation of salt in the liquid film and change of surface tension. The variation of liquied film diameter was measured by time and it was increased by the hot surface temperature increase.

  • In the present study, experiments on the film boiling of liquid droplets on oxidized copper surface was conducted. The shape of pure water droplets was observed, and the evaporation rate of them was measured during the film boiling evaporation process. The droplet of initial volume 16 ~ 30 µl was applied onto the oxidized copper surface heated up to 300 ~ 500℃, then the shape of the droplet was analyzed during the film boiling evaporation. Experimental results showed that there was good correlation between dimensionless volume and dimensionless time. However, a significant difference in evaporation rate for small and large droplets discussed in previous study was not found.
