  • The time-dependent behavior of unsteady condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) work. The two-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, fully coupled with the condensate droplet growth equations, are numerically solved by a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme, with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. The predicted results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a diaphragm downstream. The present computations represent the experimental flows well. The time-dependent unsteady condensation characteristics are discussed based upon the present predicted results. The results obtained clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to unsteady condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity and it results from the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave.

  • The current study describes experimental and computational works on the passive control of the steady and unsteady condensation shock waves, which are generated in a transonic nozzle. The bleed slots are installed on the contoured wall of the transonic nozzle in order 10 control the magnitude of the condensation shock wave and its oscillations. For computations, a droplet growth equation is copuled with two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations are carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. An experiment using an indrafi transonic wind tunnel is made to validate the computational results. The current computations represented well the experimental flows. From both the experimental and computational results it is found that the magnitude of the condensation shock wave in the bleed slotted nozzle is signi ficantly reduced, compared with no passive control of solid wall. The oscillations of the condensation shock wave are successfully suppressed by a bleed slot system.

  • The optimization of frontal device including fuel nozzle and swirler is required to secure the mixing of fuel and air and the combustion stability leading the reduction of pollutant emissions and the increase of combustion efficiency in gas turbine combustor. The effects of injection nozzle and swirler on the flow field, spray characteristics and consequently the combustion stability, were experimentally investigated by measuring the velocity field, droplet sizes of fuel spray, lean combustion limit and the temperature field in the main combustion region. Flow fields and spray characteristics were measured with APV(Adaptive Phase Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition using kerosine fuel. Temperatures were measured by Pt-Pt13%Rh, R-type thermocouple which was 0.2mm thick. Spray and flame was visualized by ICCD(Intensified Charge Coupled Device) camera. It was found that the dual swirler resulted in the biggest recirculation zone with the highest reverse flow velocity at the central region, which lead the most stable combustion. The various combustion characteristics were observed as a function of the geometries of injector and swirler, that gave a tip for the better design of gas turbine combustor.

  • The effects of welding conditions of gas metal arc welding on the elements loss of solid wire, oxygen content and impact toughness of weld metals were studied. Deoxidizing elements loss was increased with increase of arc voltage in both short-circuit transfer mode and globular transfer mode. It is believed that increase of arc voltage results in increase of reaction time between elements in the droplet and surrounding gas at the end of wire and in the arc column. Based on the thermodynamic equilibrium model, the oxygen content of weld metal can be predicted with the content of silicon and manganese as following : [%O] = $K([%Si][%Mn])^{-0.25}$, K = -15518/T+6.01. The equilibrium temperature was dependent on shielding gas, and it was 187$0^{\circ}C$ for $CO_2$ gas and 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 20%$CO_2$-80%Ar gas. The oxygen content of weld metal which shows maximum impact toughness was varied with deoxidizing alloy system of wires, 0.041 wt% for Si-Mn type wire and 0.026 wt% for Si-Mn-Ti type wire.

  • A theoretical model is proposed in order to investigate rheological behavior of bubble suspension with large deformation. Theoretical constitutive equations for dilute bubble suspensions are derived by applying a deformation theory of ellipsoidal droplet [1] to a phenomenological suspension theory [2]. The rate of deformation tensor within the bubble and the time evolution of interface tensor are predicted by applying the proposed constitutive equations, which have two free fitting parameters. The transient and steady rheological properties of dilute bubble suspensions are studied for several capillary numbers (Ca) under simple shear flow and uniaxial elongational flow fields. The retraction force of the bubble caused by the interfacial tension increases as bubbles undergo deformation. The transient and steady relative viscosity decreases as Ca increases. The normal stress difference (NSD) under the simple shear has the largest value when Ca is around 1 and the ratio Of the first NSD to the second NSD has the value of 3/4 for large Ca but 2 for small Ca. In the uniaxial elongational flow, the elongational viscosity is three times as large as the shear viscosity like the Newtonian fluid.

  • The optimization of frontal device including fuel nozzle and swirler is required to secure the mixing of fuel and air, and the combustion stability in the gas turbine combustor design for the reduction of pollutant emissions and the increase of combustion efficiency. The effects of injection nozzle and swirler on the flow field, spray characteristics and consequently the combustion stability, were experimentally investigated by measuring the velocity field, droplet sizes of fuel spray, lean combustion limit and the temperature field in the main combustion region. The effect of fuel injection nozzle was tested by adopting three different nozzles; a dual orifice fuel nozzle, a hollow cone nozzle and a solid cone nozzle. These tests were combined with the three different swirler geometries; a dual-stage swirler with 40$^{\circ}$ /-4 5$^{\circ}$ vanes and two single-stage swirlers with 40$^{\circ}$ vane angle having 12 and 16vanes, respectively. Flow fields and spray characteristics were measured with APV(Adaptive Phase Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition using kerosine fuel. • Cloud-aerosol interactions are one of the paramount but least understood forcing factors in climate systems. Generally, an increase in the concentration of aerosols increases the concentration of cloud droplet numbers, implying that clouds tend to persist for longer than usual, suppressing precipitation in the warm boundary layer. The cloud lifetime effect has been the center of discussion in the scientific community, partly because of the lack of cloud life cycle observations and partly because of cloud problems. In this study, the precipitation susceptibility (So) matrix was employed to estimate the aerosols' effect on precipitation, while the non-aerosol effect is minimized. The So was calculated for the typical coupled, well-mixed maritime stratocumulus decks and giant cloud condensation nucleus (GCCN) seeded clouds. The GCCN-artificially introduced to the marine stratocumulus cloud decks-is shown to initiate precipitation and reduces So to approximately zero, demonstrating the cloud lifetime hypothesis. The results suggest that the response of precipitation to changes in GCCN must be considered for accurate prediction of aerosol-cloud-precipitation interaction by model studies
