  • High temperature superconducting power cable requires forced flow cooling. Liquid nitrogen is circulated by a pump and cooled back by cooling system. Typical operating temperature range is expected to be between 65K and 80K. Subcooler heat exchanger uses saturated liquid nitrogen boiling on the shell side to subcool the circulating liquid nitrogen stream that cools the HTS cable. The paper describes performance tests of the cooling system. The test items are heat exchanging performance of subcooler. pressure drop between supply and return lines, heat transfer coefficient inside former, cable cryostat heat leak and simulation of electrical load of HTS cable.

  • The present paper examines the thermal and flow characteristics of a parallel flow heat exchanger and investigates the effects of the parameters on thermal performance by defining the flow nonuniformity. Thermal performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger is maximized by the optimization using Newton's searching method. The flow nonuniformity is chosen as an object function. The parameters such as the locations of separator, inlet, and outlet are expected to have a large influence on thermal performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger. The effect of these parameters are quantified by flow nonuniformity. The results show that the optimal locations of inlet and outlet are 19.73 mm and 10.9 mm, respectively. It is also shown that the heat transfer increases by 7.6% and the pressure drop decreases by 4.7%, compared to the reference model.

  • The effect of flow distribution on thermal and flow performance of a parallel flow heat exchanger has been numerically investigated. The flow distribution has been altered by varying the geometrica l parameters that included the locations of the separators, and the inlet/outlet of the heat exchanger. Flow nonuniformities along paths of the heat exchanger, which were believed to be dominantly influential to the thermal performance, have been observed to eventually optimize the design of the heat exchanger. The optimization has been accomplished by minimizing the flow nonuniformity that served as an object function when the Newton's searching method was applied. It was found that the heat transfer of the optimized model increased approximately 7.6%, and the pressure drop decreased 4.7%, compared to those of the base model of the heat exchanger.

  • For the heat and fluid flow analyses of a parallel flow heat exchanger, an improved model considering the effect of flat tube with micro-channels is proposed. The effect of flow distribution on the thermal performance of a heat exchanger is numerically investigated. The flow distribution is examined by varying geometrical parameters, i.e., the position of the separators and the inlet/outlet, and the aspect ratio of micro-channels of the heat exchanger. The flow nonuniformities along the paths of the heat exchanger are proposed and observed to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The optimization using ALM method has been accomplished by minimizing the flow nonuniformity. It is found that the heat transfer rate of the optimized model is increased by 6.0% of that of the reference heat exchanger model, and the pressure drop by 0.4%

  • Plate-fin type recuperators for the gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system were designed using commercial design software, MUSE. Heat transfer efficiency and total pressure drop in the recuperator were calculated to confirm required recuperator performance. Both counter flow and cross flow type plate-fin recuperators were designed. Results show that the counter flow type has higher efficiency and short core length, but the cross flow type is simpler to construct because the cross flow type does not need additional distributors. Two or three headers for the each recuperator core will be designed and tested to evaluate best header design. The designed recuperators and headers which will be designed later will be constructed, tested, and used in gas turbine/fuel cell hybrid power generating system.

  • The performance of louver-finned flat-tube radiators for computer CPU liquid cooling were experimentally investigated. In this study, 5 samples of louver-finned flat-tube radiators with different width size (19mm, 24mm), tube hole (1, 9) and pass number (1, 2, 5) were tested in a wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted under the different air velocity ranging from 1 to 5 m/s. The water flow rate through a pass was 1.7 LPM. Inlet temperatures of air and water were $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results showed that the best performance in the 24mm sample considering pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient.

  • The N-value from the standard penetration test(SPT) is affected by the magnitude of the rod penetration energy transmitted from the falling hammer as well as the geotechnical characteristics of the ground. Understanding of the striking energy efficiency in the SPT equipment is getting important for that reason. The energy efficiencies of the various type of equipment were investigated through field tests using the instrumented rod and wave-signal acquisition systems including the pile driving analyzer(PDA). The rod energy ratio, ERr was defined as the ratio of the energy delivered to the drilling rod to the potential free-fall energy of the hammer. It appears that the type of the hammer and lift/drop system had a strong influence on the energy transfer mechanism and ERr also varies according to the energy instrumentation system and the analysis methods.

  • A study to Improve the safety of the ceramic heat exchanger In the high temperature heat recovery system was performed in terms of air flow passes. The numerical and finite element analyses on the heat transfer and thermal stresses in the ceramic core related with air passes were carried out. The results showed that the stresses in the ceramic core induced by the thermal expansion are large enough to cause failure of the brittle ceramic core. The imployment of triple-pass air flow for the same ceramic core could increase the efficiency and effectively release approximately 20% of the maximum thermal stressess, thus improving the safety of the ceramic heat exchanger. The use of triple-pass, however, is limited by the amount of air flow due to the increase of pressure drop.

  • The PD in GIS leads to a charge transfer and a voltage drop across the discharge area. They cannot be measure directly but we can measure electromagnetic wave made by PD. In generally, compared with VHF band, electromagnetic waves of UHF band have a low noise therefore, we can detect the real defect with several pC in GIS using UHF method. In this paper, the U-slot microstrip patch antenna for measuring PD signal in GIS is presented. the proposed UHF sensor are designed to have large band characteristics and unaffected structure for GIS operation.

  • An experimental study on the stratified fluids with water and silicon oil of same volume in the cavity with upper cooling surface was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics, heat transfer through the interface of fluids, and the applications of thermal behaviors in a square cavity. The experiments were performed with variation of initial temperature and cooling surface temperature. The temperature drop of oil was faster than that of water and freezing was initiated from the interface of oil and water and propagated downward. For the water above $4^{\circ}C$, the cooling rate was faster than that below $4^{\circ}C$ and showed almost same temperature distribution but for the water that of below $4^{\circ}C$, it showed the stable stratified temperature distribution. The lower the initial temperature and the higher the cooling surface temperature was, the longer the supercooling duration.
