Development and Assessment of Crashworthy Composite Subfloor for Rotorcrafts (회전익 항공기용 복합재 내추락 하부동체 구조 개발 및 검증)

  • Rotorcrafts have more severe crashworthiness conditions than fixed wing aircraft owing to VTOL and hovering. Recently, with the increasing demand for highly efficient transportation system, application of composite materials to aircraft structures is increasing. However, due to the characteristics of composite materials that are susceptible to impact and crash, demand to prove the crashworthiness of composite structures is also increasing. The purpose of present study is to derive the structural concept of composite subfloor for rotorcrafts and verify it. In order to design a crashworthy composite subfloor, the conceptual design of the testbed helicopter for the demonstration and the derivation of energy absorbing requirement were carried out, and the composite energy absorber was designed and verified. Finally, the testbed for the demonstration of a crashworthy composite structure was fabricated, and performed free drop test. It was confirmed that the test results meet the criteria for ensuring occupant survivability.

Evaluation of Catalyst Assisted EGR Cooler System for EGR Cooler Fouling Reduction (EGR Cooler Fouling 저감을 위한 촉매 장착 EGR Cooler System 평가)

  • Exhaust gas recirculation is the well-known and widely used NOx reduction technology for diesel engines. More effective EGR cooler has been developed and applied to diesel engines to meet the reinforced emission regulation. However, the contaminated EGR cooler by diesel exhaust gas reduces the performance of the engine and NOx reduction rate. The buildup of deposits in EGR coolers cause significant degradation in heat transfer performance, often on the order of 20~30%. Deposits also increase pressure drop across coolers and thus may degrade engine efficiency under some operation conditions. In this study, as a solution for this problem, DOC assisted EGR cooler is designed and then investigated to reduce fouling and its impact on cooler performance. A single channel EGR cooler fouling test apparatus and soot particle generator were developed to represent the real EGR cooler and exhaust gas of diesel engine. EGR cooler effectiveness of the case with catalyst of pt 30g/ft3 decreased just up to 5%. This value was 45% less compared to the case without catalyst which decreased up to 9% after 10hours experiments.

Suggestion of a design load equation for ice-ship impacts

  • In this paper, a method to estimate ice loads as a function of the buttock angle of an icebreaker is presented with respect to polycrystalline freshwater ice. Ice model tests for different buttock angles and impact velocities are carried out to investigate ice pressure loads and tendencies of ice pressure loads in terms of failure modes. Experimental devices were fabricated with an idealized icebreaker bow shape, and medium-scale ice specimens were used. A dry-drop machine with a freefall system was used, and four pressure sensors were installed at the bottom to estimate ice pressure loads. An estimation equation was suggested on the basis of the test results. We analyzed the estimation equation for design ice loads of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) classification rules. We suggest an estimation equation considering the relation between ice load, buttock angle, and velocity by modifying the equations given in the IACS classification rules.

The effects of algal-derived organic matters (AOMs) and chlorinated AOMs on the survival and behavior of zebrafish

  • Algal organic matters (AOMs) are challenging to remove using traditional water treatment methods. Additionally, they are recognized as disinfection by product (DBP) precursors during the chlorination process. These compounds have the potential to seriously harm aquatic creatures. Despite the fact that AOMs and DBPs formed from algae can harm aquatic species by impairing their cognitive function and causing behavioral problems, only a few studies on the effects of AOMs and associated DBPs have been conducted. To assess the impact of extracellular organic materials (EOMs) produced by three different hazardous algal species and the chlorinated EOMs on zebrafish, this study used fish acute embryo toxicity (FET) and cognitive function tests. With rising EOM concentrations, the embryo's survival rate and mental capacity both declined. Of the three algal species, the embryo exposed to Microcystis aeruginosa EOM exhibited the lowest survival rate. On the other hand, the embryo exposed to EOMs following chlorination demonstrated a drop in CT values in both the survival rate and cognitive ability. These findings imply that EOMs and EOMs treated with chlorine may have detrimental effects on aquatic life. Therefore, an effective EOM management is needed in aquatic environment.

Collision-Damage Analysis of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Considering Ship-Collision Risk

  • As the number of offshore wind-power installations increases, collision accidents with vessels occur more frequently. This study investigates the risk of collision damage with operating vessels that may occur during the operation of an offshore wind turbine. The floater used in the collision study is a 15 MW UMaine VolturnUS-S (semi-submersible type), and the colliding ships are selected as multi-purpose vessels, service operation vessels, or anchor-handling tug ships based on their operational purpose. Collision analysis is performed using ABAQUS and substantiation is performed via a drop impact test. The collision analyses are conducted by varying the ship velocity, displacement, collision angle, and ship shape. By applying this numerical model, the extent of damage and deformation of the collision area is confirmed. The analysis results show that a vessel with a bulbous bow can cause flooding, depending on the collision conditions. For damage caused by collision, various collision angles must be considered based on the internal stiffener arrangement. Additionally, the floater can be flooded with relatively small collision energy when the colliding vessel has a bulbous bow.

  • Spatial data processing often poses challenges due to the unique characteristics of spatial data and this becomes more complex in spatial big data processing. Some tools have been developed and provided to users; however, they are not common for a regular user. This paper presents a benchmark test between two notable tools of spatial big data processing: GIS Tools for Hadoop and SpatialHadoop. At the same time, a MapReduce application is introduced to be used as a baseline to evaluate the effectiveness of two tools and to derive the impact of number of maps/reduces on the performance. By using these tools and New York taxi trajectory data, we perform a spatial data processing related to filtering the drop-off locations within Manhattan area. Thereby, the performance of these tools is observed with respect to increasing of data size and changing number of worker nodes. The results of this study are as follows 1) GIS Tools for Hadoop automatically creates a Quadtree index in each spatial processing. Therefore, the performance is improved significantly. However, users should be familiar with Java to handle this tool conveniently. 2) SpatialHadoop does not automatically create a spatial index for the data. As a result, its performance is much lower than GIS Tool for Hadoop on a same spatial processing. However, SpatialHadoop achieved the best result in terms of performing a range query. 3) The performance of our MapReduce application has increased four times after changing the number of reduces from 1 to 12.

Puncture and Cutting Resistance Characteristics of Shear Thickening Fluid Impregnated Kevlar Fabrics (전단농화유체가 함침된 Kevlar 직물의 방검 및 방침 특성)

  • Stab threats using sharp edged or pointed Instruments could be easily encountered by police officers or soldiers. In this study, the shear thickening fluids (STF) was impregnated into Kevlar fabrics to improve the stab protection and the resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was experimentally investigated. The puncture and cut resistance were tested using a drop test machine withspike and knife indenters fabricated based on the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard. The STF was filled with spherical $SiO_2$ particles having an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm. The effect of particle size on puncture and cut resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was also investigated. The measured impact load histories showed that STF impregnation into fabric leads to withstand higher peak loads than that of neat fabrics under spike test. The test results showed that Kevlar impregnated with STF exhibit remarkable improvements in puncture resistance while it is slightly influential on the cut resistance. Specifically, particle size is the one of the dominant factors controlling fabric resistance to puncture under spike impact test.

  • 3D printing technology, which creates a physical object by various material deposition, has been widely used in recent years in the manufacturing field because of its advantages. Among the various printing technologies, droplet-based 3D printing technology (e.g., Polyjet®) enables a high-resolution printing using photocurable materials such as hydrogels. Depending on the degree of light exposure, ejected photocurable droplets may have different properties (e.g., viscosity) until they collide with the substrate and it leads to the different spreading behaviors of the droplets (i.e., impact, spreading, and recoiling) during deposition on the substrate. In this study, experimental observation and analysis of the changes in hydrogel droplet viscosity and spreading behavior according to the light exposure were carried out based on high-speed image processing.

  • The aim of the present study is to derive an empirical formula relating the absorbed energy and the cutting length for longitudinally stiffened steel palates which are cut by a wedge, idealizing the ship bottom stiffened platings in groundings. This study is based on the test results and the investigations of some parameters affecting the cutting response, described in Part I. By dimensionless ana1ysis of the test results obtained in a quasi-static loading condition, the energy absorbed while a longitudinally stiffened plate is cut by a wedge is expressed as functions of the cutting length, the yield stress, the equivalent plate thickness and the wedge angle. Also, the dynamic effects are incorporated into the static formula such that the proposed formula can be applied to the impact loading situations. The validity of the proposed formula is checked by comparing with the results obtained by the other existing formulas or by the drop-hammer tests.

Analysis of Applicability of Active Noise Control (ANC) technique for Reducing Inter-Floor Noise in Apartment Buildings (공동주택 층간소음 저감을 위한 능동소음제어(ANC) 기술 적용가능성 분석)

  • In this study, numerical simulations for reducing noise between floors in an apartment building was carried out using Active Noise Control (ANC) technology. In order to examine the feasibility of using ANC to reduce noise between floors, accelerometers and microphones for noise collection were installed in the inter-floor noise test facility to measure noise and vibration caused by the impact ball drop test. By using the measured data, Filtered-x Least Mean Square (Fx-LMS) algorithm-based ANC simulations were carried out. In the simulations, after deriving optimal simulation conditions including the adaptive control convergence coefficient, the noise reduction effect was analyzed through numerical simulations using the number of installed accelerometers and speakers as variables. Finally, it was confirmed that the noise between floors could be reduced using ANC technology under limited conditions.
