  • In this paper, the control strategy for high speed operation in light rail transit system is proposed. Recently, the vector control strategy is used to get high capacity control characteristic in low speed area. But Six step mode that is one pulse mode is used in high speed region to use DC link voltage to the maximum. Therefore, in high speed area, the vector control can not be used but scalar control method is used. To get a driving performance to be stabilized, the method of smooth mode change between the low speed and high speed area and PWM control is desired. So this paper proposes the control strategy using vector control include the one pulse mode. And also proposes overmodulation method that makes to change in one pulse mode softly. The performance of traction system will be verified by simulation results using MATLAB and experimental results.

  • The bi-modal tram guided by the magnetic guidance system has two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension to lower the floor of the car and improve ride quality. The turning radius of the vehicle may increase as a consequence of the long wheel base. Therefore, the vehicle is equipped with the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system for safe driving on a curved road. Front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions, which means a negative mode, to minimize the turning radius. On the other hand, they also should be steered in the same direction, which means a positive mode, for the stopping mode. Moreover, only the front axle is steered for stability of the vehicle upon high-speed driving. In summary, steering angles and directions of the each axle should be changed according to the driving environment and steering mode. This paper proposes an appropriate AWS control algorithm for stable driving of the bi-modal tram. Furthermore, a multi-body model of the vehicle is simulated to verify the suitability of the algorithm. This model can also analyze the different dynamic characteristics between 2WS and AWS.

  • This paper presents a high performance position controller in a driving system using a time optimal control which is widely used to control driving systems to a desired reference position or velocity in minimum response time. The main purpose of this study is an improvement of transient response performance rather than steady-state response comparing with another various control strategies. In order to improve the performance of time optimal control, we tried to find the cause of the steady-state error in the driving system we have already made up and also suggest the newly modified type of time optimal control method in this paper.

  • This paper proposes a high performance position controller for a driving system using a time optimal controller which has been widely used to control driving systems to achieve desired reference position or velocity in a minimum response time. The main purpose of this research lies in an improvement of transient response performance rather than that of steady-state response in comparison with other control strategies. In order to refine the scheme of time optimal control, Lyapunov stability proofs are incorporated in a controller of standard second order system model. This scheme is applied to the control of a driving system. In view of the simulation and experiment results, the standard second order system model exhibits better minimum-time control performance and robustness than double integral system model does.

  • In this paper, we develop a joystick manual driving algorithm for an electric vehicle called Cycab. Cycab is developed as a public transportation vehicle, which can be driven either by a manual joystick or an automated driving mode. The vehicle uses six motors for driving four wheels, and front/rear steerings. Cycab utilizes one industrial PC with a real time Linux kernel and four Motorola MPC555 micro controllers, and a CAN network for the communication among the five processors. The developed algorithm consists of two automatic vehicle speed control algorithms for normal and emergency situations that override the driver's joystick command and an open loop torque distribution algorithm for the traction motors. In this study, the algorithm is developed using SynDEx, which is a system level CAD software dedicated to rapid prototyping and optimizing the implementation of real-time embedded applications on distributed architectures. The experimental results verify the usefulness of the two automatic vehicle control algorithms.

  • A novel state of health estimation method for hybrid electric vehicle lithium battery using sliding mode observer has been presented. A simple R-C circuit method has been used for the lithium battery modeling for the reduced calculation time and system resources due to the simple matrix operations. The modeling errors of simple model are compensated by the sliding mode observer. The design methodology for state of health estimation using dual sliding mode observer has been presented in step by step. The structure of the proposed system is simple and easy to implement, but it shows robust control property against modeling errors and temperature variations. The convergence of proposed observer system has been proved by the Lyapunov inequality equation and the performance of system has been verified by the sequence of urban dynamometer driving schedule test. The test results show the proposed observer system has superior tracking performance with reduced calculation time under the real driving environments.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode observer for the sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. The sliding mode observer has been presented as a robust estimation method. Most of these previous works, however, were not for an interior PMSM (IPMSM), but for a non-salient pole PMSM and its observer design is conducted in the stationary reference frame. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the design of a sliding mode observer and its driving characteristics for an IPMSM. The proposed sliding mode observer is designed in the rotating reference frame, and good drive performance is achieved even when the observer parameters are mismatched with those of an actual motor. The proposed method is applied to a 600W IPMSM, and, then, the measurement results are presented.
