The Effect of Driving Simulator Program on Elderly Drivers

  • The purpose of the present study was to present evidence for driving interventions for the elderly by conducting programs that can improve visual perception and cognitive function in a driving simulator for elderly drivers and analyse their effects. Three elderly subjects who were 65 years or older, did not have physical and cognitive impairments, and were able to drive themselves participated in the present study. A total of 12 intervention sessions, of which subjects participated in 10 sessions of nine different visual perception and cognitive function programs available in a driving simulator, were conducted and pre- and post-program assessments were conducted (two assessments in total). The assessments included the evaluation of visual perception, frontal lobe function, concentration, safe driving behaviour, and self-efficacy. The results showed positive effects of the driving simulator program on the visual perception, frontal lobe function, concentration, safe driving behaviour, and self-efficacy of all subjects. Changes in the simulator results showed remarkable improvement in the response evaluation, judgment evaluation, and predictive power evaluation, but showed difficulties in interference tasks and depth perception in common. The results showed positive effects of driving simulator training on the driving ability of the elderly, and consistent provision of such training is expected to improve the quality of life of the elderly by securing the safety of driving and actively supporting social participation.

자율주행 자동차 임시운행 허가를 위한 안전 성능 평가 시나리오 (An evaluation scenario of safety performance for extraordinary service permission of autonomous vehicle)

  • This paper presents an evaluation scenario of safety performance for extraordinary service permission of autonomous vehicle driving on a motorway. Based on advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) which is already mass-production, an autonomous vehicle driving on motorway is tested on the public roads and also getting close to mass-production. Before the autonomous vehicle tested, the safety of autonomous driving system should be evaluated based on a proper test scenario. Prior to develop the test scenario, this paper reviews the licensing standards for an autonomous vehicle in California and Nevada, and the international regulations of each ADAS. To develop the scenario, the driving conditions of motorway are categorized into five modes and fundamental evaluation requirements of elements of autonomous driving system are derived. An evaluation scenario, which represents the real driving conditions, has been developed to assess the safety of autonomous vehicle. This scenario has validated by computer simulation using model predictive control (MPC) based autonomous driving algorithm.

공기압 구동장치의 에너지효율 평가 (Evaluation of Energy Transfer Efficiency of Pneumatic Driving Apparatus)

  • In this study, an evaluation equation of energy efficiency of pneumatic driving apparatus is proposed. The evaluation equation is derived from state equation and energy equation of air in a control volume, and, the equation of motion of a moving part of a pneumatic cylinder. As a result, distribution of consumption energy and energy efficiency of pneumatic driving apparatus can be analyzed quantitatively. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by a pneumatic cylinder driving apparatus using a meter-out driving method.

주행데이터 기반 자율주행 안전성 평가 시나리오 개발 및 검증 (Development and Validation of Safety Performance Evaluation Scenarios of Autonomous Vehicle based on Driving Data)

  • As automotive industry develops, the demand for increasing traffic safety is growing. Lots of researches about vehicle convenience and safety technology have been implemented. Now, the autonomous driving test is being conducted all over the world, and the autonomous driving regulations are also being developed. Autonomous vehicles are being commercialized, but autonomous vehicle safety has not been guaranteed yet. This paper presents scenarios that assess the safety of autonomous vehicles by identifying the minimum requirements to ensure safety for a variety of situations on highway. In assessing driving safety, seven scenarios were totally selected. Seven scenarios were related to lane keeping and lane change performance in certain situations. These scenarios were verified by analyzing the driving data acquired through actual vehicle driving. Data analysis was implemented via computer simulation. These scenarios are developed based on existing ADAS evaluation and simulation of autonomous vehicle algorithm. Also Safety evaluation factors are developed based on ISO requirements, other papers and the current traffic regulations.

Simulator Sickness에 의해 유발되는 생리적 변화가 감성평가에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Physiological Changes Evoked by Simulator Sickness on Sensibility Evaluation)

  • Psychological and physiological effects from simulator sickness could be an important bias factor for sensibility evaluation. The present experiment investigated the effects of simulator sickness on sensibility evaluation in the controlled condition of driving a car for 60 minutes on a constant speed (60km/h) in graphic simulator. The simulator sickness was measured and analysed for every five minutes using their subjective evaluation and physiological signals. Results of the subjective evaluation showed that there was significant difference between rest and driving condition at 10 minutes from the start of driving, and the level of difference was increased linearly with time. The analysis on central and autonomic nervous systems showed the significant difference between rest and driving conditions after 5 minutes from the start of the driving on the parameters $\alpha$/total and $\beta$/total, and increased level of sympathetic nervous system. But there was no significant difference between different time conditions. The results indicates that physiological changes from simulator sickness can be a bias factor in objective evaluation of human sensibility which also, uses physiological signals. That is, the changes on the parameter $\alpha$/total and $\beta$/total, and on activation level of sympathetic nervous system from simulator sickness can be a bias factor for evaluation of the level of pleasantness and tension. Therefore the effort on improving the analysis by minimizing or eliminating the bias factors should be done for better and accurate sensibility evaluation in simulator environments.

기능시험장을 활용한 고령운전자 운전능력 평가방법 개발 연구 (A Study on Evaluation Method for Older Drivers Driving Ability Using Driving Course Test Site)

  • 고령운전자를 대상으로 하는 운전적성검사 체계는 국내에 다수 마련되어 있으나, 실차주행을 통해 실질적인 운전능력을 평가하는 항목 및 체계는 마련되어 있지 않다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 현재 국내에 존재하는 실차주행 평가방식인 기능시험 평가항목이 고령·일반 운전자의 운전능력 차이를 설명하는지 확인하고, 장내기능시험장을 활용하여 별도 평가항목을 개발하고자 실차주행실험을 수행하였으며, 운전자별 주행행태 데이터를 비교·분석하여 연령 및 신체·인지 능력에 따른 고령운전자의 운전능력 관련 통계적 유의성을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 기존의 기능시험 평가항목보다 별도 개발한 평가항목이 운전능력에 대해 더 높은 설명력을 갖추고 있음을 확인하였다. 이 결과를 바탕으로, 실차주행을 통한 실질적인 고령운전자 운전능력 평가방법 마련 및 시스템 개발에 대한 방향성 및 시사점을 제시하였다.

Correlation of Cognitive Function, Activities of Daily Living and Driving Performance in Stroke Hemiplegic Patients

  • Purpose : This study aims to evaluate the correlation of cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADL), and driving performance in stroke hemiplegic patients residing in Korea. Methods : Subjects of the study were 18 stroke hemiplegic patients admitted to hospitals situated in Seoul. A clock drawing test (CDT), a modified Barthel index (MBI), and a virtual reality driving simulator (Eca faros-driving simulator) were used to examine their cognitive function, their ADL ability, and their driving skills, respectively. Results : Driving skills of stroke hemiplegic patients were shown to be associated with the CDT evaluation tool (r=-.777) (p<.001), but they were found to have any correlation with MBI (r=-.022) (p>.05). Additionally, an individual's CDT showed that the driving simulator evaluation result (pass/fail) could be discriminated with a sensitivity of 100.0 %, a specificity of 40.0 %, and an accuracy of 66.7 %. The result confirmed that the CDT is a useful evaluation tool for screening driving ability in people with stroke. But the MBI did not show any significant results (sensitivity of 62.5 %, specificity of 40.0 %, and predicted the results of the simulator with 50.0 % of accuracy) (p>.05). Conclusion : This study shows that cognitive function influences the driving performance in people with stroke. Driving skills of stroke hemiplegic patients are seen to be highly related to CDT. In the field of driving rehabilitation, these findings could be useful for evaluating driving skills relating to CDT. Furthermore, the study results will set a guideline for domestic occupational therapists to use the evaluation tool for assessing driving abilities in people with stroke.

  • Recently, due to various environmental problems such as global warming, increasing of international oil prices and exhaustion of resource, a paradigm of world automobile market is rapidly changing from vehicles using internal combustion engine to eco-friendly vehicles using electric power such as EV (Electric Vehicle), HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid electric Vehicle) and FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). There are many driving cycles for performance evaluation of conventional vehicles. However there is a lack of researches on driving cycle for EV. This study is composed of part 1 and part 2. In this paper part 1, in order to develop urban driving cycle for performance evaluation of electric vehicles, Gwacheon-city patrol route of police patrol car was selected. Actual driving test was performed using EV. The driving data such as velocity, time, GPS information etc. were recorded. GUDC-EV (Gwacheon-city Urban Driving Cycle for Electric Vehicles) including road gradient was developed through the results of analyzing recorded data. Reliability of the driving cycle development method was substantiated through comparison of electricity performance. In the second part of this study, the developed driving cycle was compared to simulation result of the existing urban driving cycle. Verification of the developed driving cycle for EV performance evaluation was described.

자율협력주행을 위한 역할 기반 동적정보 서비스 평가 방법 (Evaluation of LDM (Local Dynamic Map) Service Based on a Role in Cooperative Autonomous Driving with a Road)

  • 안전한 자율주행을 위하여 차량 센서에만 의존하는 Stand-alone 방식의 한계를 극복하기 위한 방법으로, 노변의 인프라와 자율주행차간 정보를 교환하는 '자율협력주행' 방식의 기술 개발이 이루어지고 있다. 이 과정에서 협력의 대상이 되는 동적정보는 통신 데이터 손실 측면의 평가방법이 일반적이지만, 정보로서 역할 중심의 평가방법이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 자율협력주행에서 동적정보 서비스 역할의 적정성을 평가하기 위하여 역할 기반 평가방법을 제안하였다. 평가 척도로 검출률, 검출 소요시간, LDM 처리시간을 제안하였고, 평가방법론을 검증하기 위하여 실제 도로에서 보행자 정보를 대상으로 실증 실험을 시행하였다. 실험 결과로는 검출률 99%, 소요시간 200ms/건, 처리시간 19ms/건을 얻었다. 향후 제안된 동적정보 서비스 평가 방법이 관련 정보제공 서비스의 평가에 활용되기를 기대한다.

자율주행 차량의 실도로 주행을 위한 안전 시나리오 기반 인간중심 시스템 성능평가 (Toward Real-world Adoption of Autonomous Driving Vehicle on Public Roadways: Human-Centered Performance Evaluation with Safety Critical Scenarios)

  • For the commercialization and standardization of autonomous vehicles, demand for rigorous safety criteria has been increased over the world. In Korea, the number of extraordinary service permission for automated vehicles has risen since Hyundai Motor Company got its initial license in March 2016. Nevertheless, licensing standards and evaluation factors are still insufficient for operating on public roadways. To assure driving safety, it is significant to verify whether or not the vehicle's decision is similar to human driving. This paper validates the safety of the autonomous vehicle by drawing scenario-based comparisons between manual driving and autonomous driving. In consideration of real traffic situations and safety priority, seven scenarios were chosen and classified into basic and advanced scenarios. All scenarios and safety factors are constructed based on existing ADAS requirements and investigated via a computer simulation and actual experiment. The input data was collected by an experimental vehicle test on the SNU FMTC test track located at Siheung. Then the offline simulation was conducted to verify the output was appropriate and comparable to the manual driving data.
