One of the main reasons for serious road accidents is driving while drowsy. For this reason, drowsiness detection and warning system for drivers has recently become a very important issue. Monitoring physiological signals provides the possibility of detecting features of drowsiness and fatigue of drivers. One of the effective signals is to measure electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and electrooculogram (EOG) signals. The aim of this study is to extract drowsiness-related features from a set of EEG signals and to classify the features into three states: alertness, drowsiness, sleepiness. This paper proposes a drowsiness detection system using Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) coefficients and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Samples of EEG data from each predefined state were used to train the SVM program by using the proposed feature extraction algorithms. The trained SVM program was tested on unclassified EEG data and subsequently reviewed according to manual classification. The classification rate of the proposed system is over 96.5% for only very small number of samples (250ms, 64 samples). Therefore, it can be applied to real driving incident situation that can occur for a split second.
Recently, as interest in self-driving cars has increased worldwide, research and development on the Advanced Driver Assist System is actively underway. Among them, the purpose of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is to minimize the driver's driving fatigue through the control of the vehicle's longitudinal speed and relative distance. In this study, for the research of the ACC test in the real environment, the real-road test was conducted based on domestic-road test scenario proposed in preceding study, considering ISO 15622 test method. In this case, the distance measurement method using the dual camera was verified by comparing and analyzing the result of using the dual camera and the result of using the measurement equipment. As a result of the comparison, two results could be derived. First, the relative distance after stabilizing the ACC was compared. As a result of the comparison, it was found that the minimum error rate was 0.251% in the first test of scenario 8 and the maximum error rate was 4.202% in the third test of scenario 9. Second, the result of the same time was compared. As a result of the comparison, it was found that the minimum error rate was 0.000% in the second test of scenario 10 and the maximum error rate was 9.945% in the second test of scenario 1. However, the average error rate for all scenarios was within 3%. It was determined that the representative cause of the maximum error occurred in the dual camera installed in the test vehicle. There were problems such as shaking caused by road surface vibration and air resistance during driving, changes in ambient brightness, and the process of focusing the video. Accordingly, it was determined that the result of calculating the distance to the preceding vehicle in the image where the problem occurred was incorrect. In the development stage of ADAS such as ACC, it is judged that only dual cameras can reduce the cost burden according to the above derivation of test results.

Drowsy driving is a large proportion of the total car accidents. For this reason, drowsiness detection and warning system for drivers has recently become a very important issue. Monitoring physiological signals provides the possibility of detecting features of drowsiness and fatigue of drivers. Many researches have been published that to measure electroencephalogram(EEG) signals is the effective way in order to be aware of fatigue and drowsiness of drivers. The aim of this study is to extract drowsiness-related features from a set of EEG signals and to classify the features into three states: alertness, transition, and drowsiness. This paper proposes a drowsiness detection system using errors-in-variables(EIV) for extraction of feature vectors and multilayer perceptron (MLP) for classification. The proposed method evaluates robustness for noise and compares to the previous one using linear predictive coding (LPC) combined with MLP. From evaluation results, we conclude that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous one in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

The purpose of this study was to test the safety of the heel rest which was made for reducing the automobile driver's muscle fatigue with automatic transmission. Sixty subjects participated in the test, including ten males and ten females in 30s, 40s, 50s, respectively. Simulator consisted of automobile cockpit, accelerator and brake pedal sensor, heel rest. and driving displays. 30 seconds were given to subjects to be accustomed to the simulator environment. They also had one pre-trial to use the brake pedal according to the experimental scenario. They were told to step on the brake pedal immediately as soon as the red light was on the display The reaction time representing the foot travel time between accelerator and brake pedal was measured with/without the heel rest. In results, there was no significant difference in reaction time between conditions with/without heel rest. The result indicated that the heel rest used in this study would be a safe accessory for drivers who need to reduce the fatigue of the muscle or joint during driving.
The driving methods of car are front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive. At driving methods, constant velocity joint is the most important part at carrying out two functions for converting to the direction which the driver wants and transferring the power to wheels. At driving on the road, the impact can be applied to the parts transmitting power according to the state of road surface. In this study, each models of three constant velocity joints whose shaft length are different respectively were modelled with CATIA and the structural and fatigue analyses were carried out by using ANSYS. This study result is thought to be the useful material at designing the constant velocity joint with the durability against impact. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at the design of constant velocity joint and show the esthetic sense.

The vision-based driver fatigue detection is one of the most prospective commercial applications of facial expression recognition technology. The facial feature tracking is the primary technique issue in it. Current facial tracking technology faces three challenges: (1) detection failure of some or all of features due to a variety of lighting conditions and head motions; (2) multiple and non-rigid object tracking; and (3) features occlusion when the head is in oblique angles. In this paper, we propose a new active approach. First, the active IR sensor is used to robustly detect pupils under variable lighting conditions. The detected pupils are then used to predict the head motion. Furthermore, face movement is assumed to be locally smooth so that a facial feature can be tracked with a Kalman filter. The simultaneous use of the pupil constraint and the Kalman filtering greatly increases the prediction accuracy for each feature position. Feature detection is accomplished in the Gabor space with respect to the vicinity of predicted location. Local graphs consisting of identified features are extracted and used to capture the spatial relationship among detected features. Finally, a graph-based reliability propagation is proposed to tackle the occlusion problem and verify the tracking results. The experimental results show validity of our active approach to real-life facial tracking under variable lighting conditions, head orientations, and facial expressions.

Background: Few studies have examined the effects of a forward rotating shift pattern on police employee performance and well-being. This study sought to compare sleep duration, cognitive performance, and vigilance at the start and end of each shift within a three-shift, forward rotating shift pattern, common in United Kingdom police forces. Methods: Twenty-three police employee participants were recruited from North Yorkshire Police (mean age, 43 years). The participants were all working the same, 10-day, forward rotating shift pattern. No other exclusion criteria were stipulated. Sleep data were gathered using both actigraphy and self-reported methods; cognitive performance and vigilance were assessed using a customized test battery, comprising five tests: motor praxis task, visual object learning task, NBACK, digital symbol substitution task, and psychomotor vigilance test. Statistical comparisons were conducted, taking into account the shift type, shift number, and the start and end of each shift worked. Results: Sleep duration was found to be significantly reduced after night shifts. Results showed a significant main effect of shift type in the visual object learning task and NBACK task and also a significant main effect of start/end in the digital symbol substitution task, along with a number of significant interactions. Conclusion: The results of the tests indicated that learning and practice effects may have an effect on results of some of the tests. However, it is also possible that due to the fast rotating nature of the shift pattern, participants did not adjust to any particular shift; hence, their performance in the cognitive and vigilance tests did not suffer significantly as a result of this particular shift pattern.
The main causes of traffic accidents while driving a car is of the driver's visual distraction. In this study, the color sensitivity of the information projected on the windshield were evaluated for HUD (Head Up Display) system which helps the driver's eyes on the road while driving. The driving Information were projected $9^{\circ}$ downward from front sight $0^{\circ}$ under lab's fluorescent lights, LED floorlights and the TV had having 25 [lux] illumination when driving at night environment and 100,000 [lux] of daylight environment. Munsell color hue of the basic five colors (R, Y, G, B, P) and the color of traffic lights YR, W were the color of the seven characters, each character were outlined by White, Gray except for W. Total of 19 experimental stimuli was shown in the environment of day and night driving for asking visibility information of color, fatigue, preferences, and evaluate the degree of interference. The results came out that the bright Y and G color is visibility significantly for daylight. Second, with the outline of the text, the color of the outline works as a background for luminance contrast effects and affects visibility. Third, without the outline, the glass in front of the vehicle acts as the background and the luminance contrast of characters achieve greater brightness and visibility. The luminance contrast between the stimuli and background should be considered for increasing color visibility for driving information which is an important factor for HUD commercialization.
As a part of HMS(Human-Machine System), the car is very important thing in common life. It is also a significant part to study on the controllers of car that is intentively related with all sensibilities during driving. There are lots of controllers on seating buck of the car. However, there are few study on the sensibility analysis of them. Most of all, the foot controller could be easily overlooked because it could be invisible. This study was based on relationship that the controllers fitted to the driving posture in the drivers' sensibility difference of two transmission modes, automatic and manual transmission. The results show the driver's preference driving posture and sensibility in two kinds of transmission cars. Consequently, it should be designed the seating buck for two different types respectively to be taken comfort driving posture and improve the safety for drivers. Also, it could reduce the fatigue and discomfort in the task of driving. The design of the controllers strongly effects on the drivers' response time. hereby this study was accessed to the sensibility of Korean with analyzing the relationship, quantitative data, and sensibility difference between two kinds of transmission cars.
