The Effect of Changing Driving Brightness on Older Drivers

  • The traffic accidents of the aged are increasing because old people generally experience a decline of physical functions and judgment but their dependence on automobiles increases. In order to investigate the older drivers' response to traffic signs and surrounding environment according to changing driving brightness, this study measured the visual cognitive behavior, driving behavior, and subjective evaluation while the driving brightness was changed using a driving simulator. Furthermore, the drivers who recognized traffic signs and those who did not were compared. As a result, it was found that some older drivers had declined ability of cognition, some failed to adapt to rapid brightness change even if sufficient attention was given to traffic sign, and some could not safely control the vehicle when approaching intersections. Therefore, the development of support systems for aged drivers in traffic environment is necessary in the future.

The Study of Complementary Standards to Improve Visibility on Crosswalk throughout Verification Studies after Reviewing Standards (횡단보도의 시인성 향상을 위한 기준검토 및 검증 테스트를 통한 보완 기준(안) 연구)

  • According to the analysis of crosswalk pedestrian accidents, accidents that occur at night represent 70% of all deaths among crosswalk pedestrians when compared to accidents occurring in the daytime. This is due to the poor visibility that hinders drivers to recognize pedestrians at night. Illuminance on the horizontal plane of the road and the current state of crosswalk lighting are not sufficient enough to comply with standards. Thus, we analyzed factors derived from lighting environment studies on improving crosswalk visibility, domestic and foreign crosswalk lighting standards, and subsequently proposed solutions which are needed to raise domestic crosswalk lighting standards, and a means to uphold those standards through proper verification.

  • Because most applications of vision-based object tracking demonstrate satisfactory operations only under very constrained environments that have simplifying assumptions or specific visual attributes, these approaches can't track target objects for the highly variable, unstructured, and dynamic environments like a traffic scene. An adaptive fusion framework is essential that takes advantage of the richness of visual information such as color, appearance shape and so on, especially at cluttered and dynamically changing scenes with partial occlusion[1]. This paper develops a particle filter based adaptive fusion framework and improves the robustness and adaptation of this framework by adding a new distinctive visual attribute, an image feature descriptor using SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform)[2] and adding an automatic teaming scheme of the SIFT feature library according to viewpoint, illumination, and background change. The proposed algorithm is applied to track various traffic objects like vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes in a driver assistance system as an important component of the Intelligent Transportation System.

  • Currently, ITS (Intelligent Transport System) system is supporting a variety of services to be enhanced traffic's efficiency and driver's safety as developing of information communications and network technology. High data transfer communications such as Wibro, HSPA and WAVE are used for providing ITS services, but there are some differences from specification and performance applied. So, users who are employing the communication systems to transfer data whatever they want to have been suffering from use. In this paper, it is proposed that user can use various high data transfer communication systems wherever environments they are in using adaptation of system change. Also, it is implemented performance of system which uses alternate communication scheme in mobile terminal based on embedded platform.

A Hand Gesture Recognition Method using Inertial Sensor for Rapid Operation on Embedded Device

  • We propose a hand gesture recognition method that is compatible with a head-up display (HUD) including small processing resource. For fast link adaptation with HUD, it is necessary to rapidly process gesture recognition and send the minimum amount of driver hand gesture data from the wearable device. Therefore, we use a method that recognizes each hand gesture with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor based on revised correlation matching. The method of gesture recognition is executed by calculating the correlation between every axis of the acquired data set. By classifying pre-defined gesture values and actions, the proposed method enables rapid recognition. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of the algorithm, which can be implanted within wearable bands, requiring a minimal process load. The experimental results evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of our decomposed correlation matching method. Furthermore, we tested the proposed algorithm to confirm the effectiveness of the system using pre-defined gestures of specific motions with a wearable platform device. The experimental results validated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hand gesture recognition system. Despite being based on a very simple concept, the proposed algorithm showed good performance in recognition accuracy.

Comparison of the Symmetry of Buttock Pressure during Simulated Driving between Heathy Adults and Patients with Stroke

  • Purpose: Driving is an important activity that is affected by various motor and cognitive deficits after stroke. On the other hand, there is no standard screening tool to evaluate the sitting asymmetry during driving, which is the stereotyped postural characteristic observed in patients with stroke. Therefore, this study compared the buttock pressure during simulated driving between healthy adults and patients with stroke. Methods: Ten post-stroke patients and ten healthy subjects participated in the experiment. The participants experienced simulated driving of 6.1 km during approximately 5 minutes for adaptation. The driving scenario consisted of 3.5 km urban traffic conditions, 10 km straight highway, and 7 km curved or hilly rural roads. Force sensitive application (FSA) was used to analyze the distribution of the buttock pressure on the driver's seat. The symmetry index (SI) was determined using the average buttock pressure of each side of the buttock. The closer SI is to zero, the higher the symmetry of buttock pressure. Results: These studies showed that the SI of healthy subjects was significantly closer to zero than that of the stroke patients. Conclusion: The buttock pressure of the stroke patients showed more asymmetry than that of the healthy subjects during simulated driving. Therefore, a therapeutic approach is needed for symmetrical sitting to improve the driving performance.

  • This paper represents an investigation of the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control system using Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation(HiLS). Control logic is primarily developed and tested with a specially equipped test vehicle. Establishment of an efficient and low cost development tool is a very important issue, and test vehicle approach is costly and time consuming. HiLS method is useful in the investigation of driver assistance and active safety systems. The HiLS system consists of a stepper motor for throttle control, a hydraulic brake system with an electronic vacuum booster, an electronic controller unit, a data logging computer which are used to save vehicle states and signals of actuator through a CAN and a simulation computer using mathematical vehicle model. Adaptation of a CAN instead of RS-232 Serial Interface for communication is a trend in the automotive industry. Since this environment is the same as a test vehicle, a control logic verified in laboratory can be easily transferred to a test vehicle.

Automotive Adaptive Front Lighting Requiring Only On/Off Modulation of Multi-array LEDs

  • The Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is a part of the active safety system, providing optimized vision to the driver during night time and other poor-sight conditions of the road by automatic adaptation of lighting to environmental and traffic conditions. Basically, an AFS provides four different modes of the passing beam as designated in an United Nations Economic Commission for Europe regulation (ECE324-R123): neutral state or country light (Class C), urban light (Class V), highway light (Class E), and adverse weather light (Class W). In this paper, we first present an optics design for an AFS system capable of producing the Class C/V/E/W patterns requiring only on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs with no need for any additional mechanical components. The AFS optics consists of two separated modules, cutoff and spread; the cutoff module lights a narrow central area with high luminous intensity, satisfying the cutoff regulation, and the spread module forms a wide spread beam of low luminous intensity. Each module consists of two major parts; the first converts a discretely positioned LED array into a full-filled area emitting light source plane, and the second projects the light source plane to a 25 m away target plane. With the combination of these two optics modules, the four beam patterns are formed by simple on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs. Then we report the development of a prototype that was demonstrated to provide the four beam patterns.

Systematic Review of Driving Rehabilitation for Improving On-Road Driving (도로 주행 능력을 향상시키기 위한 운전재활의 체계적 고찰)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the driving rehabilitation for on-road driving through a systematic review. Methods: We systematically examined papers published in journals from December 2014 to January 2015, using CINAH, Embase, Pubmed, PsycINFO, and The Cochrane Library. Eventually, 15 studies were included in the analyses. Results: The evidence of 15 studies was from levels I, III, and V. The subjects included in the analyses were patients with stroke(40.0%), older driver(20.0%), traumatic brain injury(20.0%), acquired brain injury(13.3%) and spinal cord injury(6.7%). The intervention types were driving simulator training(53.3%), cognitive skills training(26.6%), off-road educational training(6.7%), adaptation of assistive device(6.7%), and behind-the-wheel training(6.7%). The effects of driving rehabilitation were different depending on the types of intervention. However, driving simulator training showed significant improvement of on-road assessments in all studies included this study. Conclusions: Driving rehabilitation for on-road driving has been used in various types. Specially, the effect of the driving simulator training has been proved by many studies. Future studies are to be required with client from a range of diagnostic groups to establish evidence-based interventions and determine their effectiveness in improving on-road driving.
