Recently there is increasing the flow of hazardous chemical substances caused by industrial waste waters into a main river. It is needed to make the high treatment in drinking water treatment plants for reducing a health risk. Therefore, the monitoring of trace hazardous chemical substances by the industrial waste water inflow is available increasing economical efficiency of river management as well as reduction of risk. In this study, the most important substance among numerical and quantitative trace hazardous chemicals is Hexachlorobutadiene in an effluent of industrial wastes. However all items of GroupII which was included with semiconductor, electricity/electron and metal assemble was not detected. It means that we must consider the characteristics and behavior of load pollutants to water resources to select monitoring items. That was called 'preparatory monitoring'. We can reduce an economical consumption as well as risks from these pollutants using the preparatory monitoring.
Fluoridation of drinking water to a level of about 0.8mg/l (below 1.5mg/l) for reducing the incidence of tooth decay is recommended. However, concerns about potential problems of unknown effects and overdosing hinders the fluoridation. This study describes the work performed to obtain information on the behavior of fluoride under various conditions in the process of water fluoridation. Effects of water treatment chemicals, water treatment unit, and water distribution on water fluoridation were investigated at both lab and an actual water treatment plant. Residual fluoride concentration was not affected by lime and chlorine dosage up to 20mg/l. Flocculation with PAC slightly decreased the residual fluoride concentration as PAC dosage increased. Average fluoride concentration of 0.87mg/l at an intake basin was decreased to 0.83mg/l by sedimentation, 0.81mg/l by dual media(sand+anthracite) filtration, and 0.79mg/l by granular activated carbon filtration in the water treatment plant.
Due to the large-scale production and use of synthetic chemicals in industralized countries, various chemicals are found in the aquatic environment, which are often termed as micropollutants. Effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as one of the major sources of these micropollutants. In this article, the current status of occurrence and removal of micropollutants in WWTPs and their management policies and options in domestic and foregin countries were critically reviewed. A large number of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and industrial chemicals are found in WWTPs' influent, and are only partially removed by current biological wastewater treatment processes. As a result, some micropollutants are present in WWTPs' effluents, which can negatively affect receiving water quality or drinking water source. To better understand and assess the potential risk of micropollutants, a systematic monitoring framework including advanced analytical tools such as high resolution mass spectrometry and bioanalytical methods is needed. Some Western European countries are taking proactive approach to controlling the micropollutants by upgrading WWTP with enahnced effluent treatment processes. While this enahnced WWTP effluent treatment appears to be a viable option for controlling micropollutant, its implementation requires careful consideration of the technical, economical, political, and cultural issues of all stakeholders.

Due to more stringent regulations in drinking water, membrane separation has been playing an increasingly important role. Seawater desalination by reverse osmosis is a typical example and has been used world-wide. Although the existing technology based on coagulation and media filtration is well established and reliable technology, with the advance of industrial and agricultural activities it is difficult for this technology to remove contaminants such as nitrate and synthetic organic chemicals. To meet the drinking water standards and produce higher quality water, several membrane filtration research programs have been initiated which include Japanese MAC21 and New MAC21 projects. In this paper, potable water application of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration(NF) and their case histories will be explained in more detail.

There is a problem to be solved for improvement of durability and safety for concrete When the waterproofing and anticorrosive work of main concrete are design, the material a of construction need to be correctly applied to appropriate circumstance conditions. Epoxy mostly been used for concrete water tank structure. Lately, lots of subjects on adaption res in mortar for waterproofing and anticorrosive are under discussion. Then, we attempt to approach by evaluating and comparing every capabilities with waterproofing materials in this experiment. Capability evaluation items include the bond age and curing conditions, the bond strength after accelerated weathering test and fret impact resistance, a mount of water, seepage quan Through the experiment analysis, we found that waterproofingtity, drinking water chemicals resistance. and anticorrosive resin mortar used with glass fiber cloth, inorgar material is dominantly superior to other waterproofing materials. According to this paper, we suggest the resin mortar as a new surface treatment material water tank structure.
Complicated and expensive seawater desalination technology is a big challenge in boron removal process. Conventional seawater desalination process of coagulation utilized for pre-treatment is difficult to remove boron. Boron can be removed more effectively in Reverse Osmosis (RO) process than any other processes. In this study, a coagulant with the name Mineral Cluster was examined its boron removal ability. Boron removal efficiency of Mineral Cluster depended on pH value and Mineral Cluster dosage. Desalination process combines the pre-treatment process with Mineral cluster diluted at the ratio of 1:2500 and the RO membrane process. The original sea water could be desalinated to drinking water quality, 1 mg/L, without any pH adjustments. Therefore, if the Mineral cluster is added without any other chemicals for adjusting pH, the desalination process would be much safer, efficient and economical.
As a countermeasure for reduction of corrosion in the delivery and distribution pipes used for tap water, materials for the pipelines in-houses and the effect of water quality on corrosivity of water pipelines were investigated in the distribution system of Han river. As the corrosion index at 6 water purification facilities of Han river, average Langelier Saturation Index (LI) of raw and finished water were -1.0 and -1.4 respectively and average Larson Index (LR) were 9.5 and 9.9, respectively. And also corrosion potential showed corrosivity in finished water (-431~-462 mV) as well as raw water (-426~-447 mV). This results indicate that tap water quality of han river have corrosivity. To understand the corrosivity effect in pipe material used for premise distribution system, water quality of stagnant tap water and tap water were analyzed and the differences between them were calculated. The difference concentration of iron, copper and zinc were $12.9{\mu}g/L$, $31.0{\mu}g/L$ and $45.0{\mu}g/L$ respectively in galvanized steel pipe for use more than 15 years and showed highest concentration. As a result, the control to corrosivity in the water pipelines, corrosivity control treatment in the water purification system can be applied. In advance it is necessary to monitor corrosivity of water quality using corrosive index because corrosivity may differ from the seasonal and regional characteristics and water chemicals dosage. For the future the guideline for corrosion index have to be established.
This study, which was tarried out to investigate the characteristics of permeation rates and fouling phenomena in drinking-water treating processes with MF membrane, showed that pressure drop was dependent on the length of membrane module and operating pressure; the pressure drop increased with the length of membrane module and operating pressure, operation at a relatively low pressure(0.5kg/$cm^2$) is better than that at a relatively (2.0kg/$cm^2$), since high operating pressure accelerates the clogging. In case of out-in permeation type, almost same flux was obtained after a certain operating time regardless of membrane length and operating pressure. In order to understand, the microbial fouling, chemical cleaning was carried out to the forced contaminated hollow-fiber membrane with chemicals($H_2O_2$, NaOCl, and NaOH). Chemical cleanings with $H_2O_2$and NaOCl, which are oxidizing agents, are better for sterilizing and desorbing the microbes than those with NaOH.
The use of toxic chemicals was extended as the industry in Korea has grown dramatically during the last three decades. However, list of toxic substances and limit concentrations in the water environment are not consistent within management of ambient water, drinking water and industrial effluent. This article suggests the systematic framework to classify toxic substances in the water environment and deriving their effluent limits. The most important factor for decision-making to classify toxic substances is whether their concentrations in the water environment are higher than the reference concentrations, estimated by considering human health risk and ecological risk. Using a risk-based reference concentration, the ambient water quality criterion, it is possible to derive the regulatory limit concentrations of toxic substances in drinking water and in industrial effluent. The goal concentrations in the effluent, which guarantee the human and ecological safety, should be determined with scientific investigation, balancing environmental benefit and economical effect, considering availability of treatment technology and identifying characteristics of wastewater from different industries.
Arsenic is one of the most abundant contaminant found in waste mine tailings, because of it's carcinogenic property, the countries like United states of America and Europe have made stringent regulations which govern the concentration of arsenic in drinking water. The current study focuses on different treatment methods for removal of arsenic from waste water. Treatment method the high strength arsenic waste water is treated with Fe(III)-ettringite by co-precipitation method. Number of experiments were carried out to decide the optimal dosage of Fe(III)-ettringite to treat arsenic waste water. The Fe(III)-ettringite was synthesized by taking appropriate equivalent ratios of calcium oxide and ferric chloride in proportion to the arsenic. The best removal efficiencies of 94% were observed at a As/(Ca: Fe) ratio of 1:3. The maximum removal of arsenic was observed in pH range of 12. But as the pH increases the arsenic removal efficiency decreases as portlandite is formed in the pH above 12. The analysis of surface of precipitate conform the needle like structure of ettringite. This treatment technique has promising features such as, the chemicals required in the treatment as well as the sludge generated can be reduced. The operating pH range is in alkaline region which is advantageous over traditional treatment process which has lower pH. Also the co-precipitation not only helps in removal of arsenic but also heavy metals.
