Micro drilling characteristics by EDM method was investigated. In detail, Micro tool electrode for EDM drilling was machined by use of WEDG method and micro hole was drilled using the machined tool electrode in SUS plate. The machining accuracy and time was compared in a different dielectric fluid. As a result, it was convinced that this method could be utilized as a fabrication technology of micro mold or micro 3 dimensional parts.
The drilling process has a great importance for the production technology due to its widerspread use in the manufacturing industry. In order to enhance a maximum production rate and prevent the drill from the damage, it is important to monitor and control the drilling system. Thrust force and cutting torque are the main output variables in the design of drilling control systems. In this paper, an alternative estimation method of thrust force by using flexible neural networks is proposed. Flexible neural network uses the sigmoid activation function with adjustable parameter in order to enhance the approximation accuracy ...
The Hole Drilling Method(HDM) is widely used to measure residual stresses in the welded structures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy fo measuring residual stresses when drilling the hole by Air-abrasive Jet machine(AJM). Simulated residual stresses wre introduced by applying known stresses to steel bars. These known streses were then compared with measured stresses relaxed from hole drilling. the obtained results are summarized as follows; 1) It was possible to obtain well defined holes with the nozzle designed for this study. 2) If the hole shape is not cylindrical, critical may occur. 3) In the uniaxial strain field, the measurement error of the maximum principal stress was within .+-.10 percent. The orientation angle of the maximum principal stress was within 8.deg. from the given directioin. 4) meausrements were made varying hole depths. Little or no change of stresses occurs since holse were drilled more than the depth of the 0.6 times diameter. 5) The air-abrasive jet machining for drilling holse does not cause appreciable apparent stresses which si critical to measure residual stresses.
A new concept drill was developed recently (or increasing accuracy and productivity in drilling operation. The burr formation in drilling causes many problems in deburring operation because burrs are formed inside holes and it is difficult to remove them. Burr formations are observed in drilling operation with a new concept drill and are compared with conventional HSS drill. Several workpieces with different materials are drilled with several cutting conditions, velocity and feed rate. The burr in drilling can be classified into three types according to the location of crack. To observe the burr formation mechanism, the cap which is formed with the new concept drill is observed and measured.
A new four-node degenerated shell element with drilling degrees of freedom (DOF) is proposed. Allman-type displacement approximation is incorporated into the formulation of degenerated shell elements. The approximation improves in-plane performance and eliminates singularities of system matrices resulted from DOF deficiency. Transverse shear locking is circumvented by introducing assumed covariant shear strains. Two kinds of penalty energy are considered in the formulation for the purpose of suppressing spurious modes and representing true drilling rotations. The proposed element can be applied to almost all kinds of shell problems including composite laminated shell structures and folded shell structures. Numerical examples show that the element is of good accuracy and of reasonably fast convergence rate.
Drilling chatter is regenerative type self-excited vibration and can be predicted by the measurments of the dynamic compliance between tool and workpiece based on structural dynamics and cutting dynamics. This paper describes the theoretical prediction about drilling chatter and the mechanism of the formation of multi-coner shape in holes by drilling chatter. By the experiments and theoretical study, it is found that the odd number of multi-coner shape is always generated by drilling chatter.
Micro Drills have found ever wider application. However micro drilling is a machining to integrate the difficult machinablities such as tool stiffness, position control and revolution accuracy, and is known to cost and time consuming. So, this study aimed to practice ultraminiature drilling(0.05 .phi. ) wiht simple component, if possible. System is developed as the three modules : feed drives, spindle and monitoring part. The dynamics of measured current signals from the spindle of Micro Hole Drilling machine are investigated to establish the criteria of stepfeed mechanism. Cutting experiments identify the relationship of spindle rpm, feed rate and tool life. The smaller drill diameter is, the more suitable cutting condition have to be selected because of chip packing.
The burr worsens the accuracy of a workpiece and decreases a lot of pro- ductivity because it takes so much time and efforts to remove it. In this paper, the height, thickness and size of a drilling burr were derived from the drilling variables of drill diameter, chisel edge angle, web rate =($\Frac{2{\times}\;web\;thickness}{drill\;dia}$) and yielding stress of the workpiece as wel as feed, point angle and helix angle. The theoretical and experimental values of drilling thrust, torque and burr size of the testpiece were analyzed with the method of numerical analysis in a standard drilling condition. The order of choosing the drilling variables for the purpose of controlling the burr size was dealt in this paper with burr forming ratio. The results are as follows: (1) The drill diameter forms 42 percents feed 25 percents point angle 23 percents and web rate, chisel edge angle and gelix angle 5 percents of the partial differential slope of drilling thrust within the usual available ranges of drilling variables. (2) The drill diameter forms 55 percents feed 26 percents web rate 9 percents and chisel edge angle, point angle and helix angle 10 percents of the par- tial differential slope of drilling torque in the usual available ranges of drilling variables. (3) About 70 percents of the burr size can be controlled by feed, 29 percents by web rate in the case of a fixed diameter. It is recommended drilling10 variables to be chosen in the order of feed, web rate, drill diameter, point angle, chisel edge angle and helix angle so as to control the burr size effectively.
The integrity and accuracy of the drilling hole are decided by positional error, diameter error, the roundness, the straightness, the cylindericity, size of the burr, the surface roundness and others. Among these parameters, positional error and diameter error have the most important parameters. The diameter error has been widely studied, but there has been little research done about the positional error due to the difficulty of measuring it. The measurement of hole location and diameter would be performed by CMM(Coordinate Measurement Machine). However, the usage of CMM requires much time and cost. In order to overcome the difficulties, we have developed a hole location and diameter error measuring device using machine vision. The developed measurement device attached to a CNC machine can determine hole quality quickly and easily.
