The conditions to simulate the atmospheric corrosion behavior in the laboratory were investigated to clarify atmospheric corrosion mechanism of steel material in coastal area, For airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet, the various behaviors were observed by optical microscope, The particle size of the dried airborne sea salt was about $20{\mu}m$, and was about 1/10 compared with the artificial seawater droplet. Though the airborne sea salt represented the same behavior as the thermodynamic water absorption, the behavior of the artificial seawater droplet deviated from the results of the thermodynamic calculation, It is concluded that the water absorption behavior is influenced by the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion behaviors of carbon steels were observed under the deposited condition of airborne sea salt and artificial seawater droplet. The corrosion behaviors showed a different trend, indicating that the corrosion behavior depended on the particle size of the dried sea salt. The corrosion in the actual environrnent progressed greater than that in the chamber. Furthermore, the summer showed the greater corrosion than the spring. It is found that the corrosion behaviors are attributed to the influence of the environmental factors.
Squid Sikhae is traditional salt-fermented food in Korea. We evaluated the standardization of optimal processing conditions for desirable quality-controlled squid Sikhae using analyses of physiochemical properties, microbiological species, and organoleptic tests. Among several squid Sikhae preparation processes, the optimal fermentation temperature sun-dried sea salt concentration, and fermentation period for squid Sikhae of acceptable quality were $10^{\circ}C$, 4%, and 6 days, respectively. Amino-N and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) contents of the acceptable quality squid Sikhae were 162.51 mg/100 g and 15.25 mg/100 g, respectively.
This study is aimed to design a membrane process that systematically removes contaminants including microplastics in sun-dried salt using a separation membrane. In this study, we selected the separation membrane material, pore size, and module suitable for the sun-dried salt fields, and proceeded with the experiments under the salt fields and laboratory conditions. A pilot plant was constructed and tested in our lab and in the actual saltern with the selected 200 kDa, 4 kDa ultrafiltration membranes, and 3 kDa nanofiltration membranes. Most of the impurities in the sea salt were 0.1 ㎛ in size, and more than 7 types of various microplastics were detected in the impurities. After that, as a result of checking the filtered water through the separation membrane process, no impurities were detected. As a result of comparing the existing sea salt component and the sea salt component prepared with separation membrane filtrate, impurities were effectively removed without change in the sea salt component.
Classwort (Salicornia herbacea L.), a halophyte, is a potential functional food resource in Korea. This study was conducted to determine the antioxidant activity of glasswort, as a functional food material, on the lipid oxidation of pork. To compare antioxidant effect of different parts of glasswort, samples such as dried ground leaves, stems, and roots of glasswort were prepared. The antioxidant activity was determined by the TBARS(Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances) method. Freeze-dried leaves of glasswort at 0 day of storage had the lowest TBARS values, suggesting the highest antioxidant effect. But the antioxidative effect of freeze-dried leaves of glasswort was less than that of BHT. At 7 days after storage, however, the values were not different from oven-dried leaves. The oven-dried leaves at 14 days after storing should highest antioxidative activity. In conclusion, antioxidative effect of glasswort was apparently exhibited through measurement of TBARS. Antioxidative effect from ground leaf sample of glasswort harvested in coastal region was the highest, followed by root and stem samples. Glasswort had twice as high antioxidative effect as sea salt and bamboo salt.
Physicochemical properties and mineral compositions of seaweed salts prepared with various seaweeds and concentrated sea water were determined. Ash content of sea mustard was highest (22.7%) and that of laver the lowest (9.8%). Sea mustard contained high amount of Na, while sea tangle and seaweed fusiforme contained high amounts of K and Ca. When insoluble solids were removed after incineration of dried salt, surface color of the salt whitened more due to increase in salt purity with resulting decreases in pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), pH and ORP of the ashed salt decreased, and K and Ca contents increased, while Mg content decreased. Yield of seaweed salt was the highest in sea mustard, ORP was lowest in sea tangle and seaweed fusiforme, and K and Ca contents increased significantly in sea tangle and seaweed fusiforme salts. As the concentration of sea water increased, yield and purity of the salts increased with decrease in pH and ORP and increase in Ca and Mg contents. Seaweed salt showed the characteristic crystalline structure as viewed by SEM.
Model for dust and salt transportation from the dried bottom of the Aral Sea is suggested. Theoretical analysis is based on the turbulent diffusion equation for the averaged function of passive impurity concentration. One-layer model of the atmospheric boundary layer is assumed. Impurity precipitation rates are calculated as the functions of the particle size and the distance source of particles. Analytical solutions for the point and two-dimensional sources of impurities are found. Model calculations for salt and sand transport from the Aral Sea basin are made on the basis of 2D source model with a constant intensity.

Salt is a major component in salt-fermented shrimp with 25% content. There are various types of salts that have different compositions, which may affect the quality of salt-fermented shrimp. We have investigated effects of various salts such as Korean solar salt (KSS), purified salt (PS), sea-concentrated salt (SCS), glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) spray solar salt (GSS), glasswort-sea-concentrated salt (GSCS) and spray-dried salt (SDS) on the physicochemical and sensory properties of fermented shrimps. Ammonia nitrogen content of the salted shrimp prepared with SDS was lower than others until 60 day fermentation. At 90 day fermentation, amino nitrogen contents of salted shrimps prepared with GSCS and GSS (980 mg%) were higher than those of the others while sample prepared with SDS showed the lowest amino nitrogen content (680 mg%). Volatile basic nitrogen content of salted shrimp prepared with SDS was also lower than those of the others between 14 and 60 day fermentation and there were differences among samples in the contents of trimethylamine at 180 day fermentation. Sensory evaluation results indicated significant differences in salty, overall taste and overall acceptance among samples. Overall acceptance was significantly higher in salt-fermented shrimp prepared with KSS, SCS, GSS, GSCS and SDS than in fermented shrimp with PS.
This study was carried out to observe the property changes of radishes salted with different salt (deep sea water and sun-dried salt). Shrinkage rate, salinity and texture were measured. The shrinkage rate values of radishes salted with deep seawater salt solution were higher than those salted with sun-dried salt in 8 hr after salting. The salinity of radishes salted with deep seawater salt solution was also higher than those salted with sun-dried salt. The jelly strength decreased during salting period and 5% salting radish were lower than 3% ones. The softness and hardness of radishes salted with deep seawater salt were higher than those salted with sun-dired salt as well.
General composition, amines, and flesh tissue of boiled-dryed abalone and sea cucumber were compared with those of the freeze-dried abalone and sea cucumber. No significant differences were found in the general composition between the boiled-dried and freeze-dried, but the slight amount of soup flowed out from the boiled-dried. A specific feature is that 28.24% of ash was found in the boild-dried sea cucumber and 33.99% of ash in the freeze dried one in order of Na, K, Mg, Ca. Such contents of ash are considered to be due to salt and soft bone of samples. In the changes of amines in abalone and sea cucumber, trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) showed no great difference between raw samples and the dried ones, but showed the decrease of 43% to 54% in the boiled-dried ones, compared with raw ones. Trimethylamine (TMA) was richer in the boiled-dried than in the dried. Dimethylamine (DMA) which has tendency of causing cancer in the human body showed 14 times of content in the freeze boiled-dried abalone, 18.5 times in the boiled-dried sea cu cumber and also showed 4.7 to 6.7 times of increase in the freeze dried, respectively compared with raw ones. The muscular change of abalone was not found in at freeze dried samples, but a considerable change in sea cucumber.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sea salt on the growth and moisture content of sweet basil, soil moisture content, and salt stress. As a research method, sweet basil was treated with sea salt at 0, 5, 50, 100, and 200 mM concentration of sea salt was investigated to determine the growth and stress time of sweet basil. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the leaf width increased by 11% when treated with 5 mM, 49% when treated with 50 mM, and 44% when treated with 100 mM. Leaf length was confirmed to grow by 16% at 5 mM, 59% at 50 mM, and 82% at 100 mM treatment. As a future study, based on the effect of sea salt on the leaf and length growth of sweet basil by concentration, it was considered that more research is needed on the beneficial effects of sea salt on edible, medicinal, and aromatic plants. In addition, although salt has only been studied on stress in crops, we intend to contribute to providing basic data for research on ingredients more beneficial to the environment by finding various edible, medicinal, and aromatic plants using the sun-dried salt used in this study.
