Lindera erythrocarpa is a less utilized species in Korea although that it has straight stem and it grows up to 40 cm in diameter. A proper kiln-dry schedule is required in advance to utilize an unknown species. Terazwa's quick oven-dry method was used to find it and which was confirmed by drying 25 mm thick boards in a kiln. The average green moisture content and the average green specific gravity of Lindera erythrocarpa are 72.3% and 0.53, respectively. Prospective kiln-drying conditions obtained by Terazwa's quick oven-dry method are a initial dry-bulb temperature of $50^{\circ}C$, a initial wet-bulb depression of $4^{\circ}C$ and a final dry-bulb temperature of $75^{\circ}C$, which are in a good agreement with USDA FPL kiln-dry schedule of T5-D4. 25 mm thick boards dried in a kiln with T5-D4 kiln-dry schedule did not have any severe drying defects such as honycombing and warping. A severer kiln-dry schedule of T8-C5 was developed and applied to another kiln-drying run to confirm it.
Utilization of crop residues was investigated in search of ecologically desirable treatment of wastewater from small-scale swine farm. Instead of common materials rice stray was used as a support medium of tricking filter with the farm, wastewater treatment. The treated rice stave medium was dried, crushed, and directly added to soil, where bunching lettuce seedlings were grown under greenhouse conditions. The development of bunching lettuce was significantly enhanced by the application of the straw medium up to 2100 kg/10a. Little changes in soil chemical properties were observed at harvesttime, except the pH which was raised by more than 1 unit, and the content of Mg which was depleted presumably by the uptake of the plant.

The fluorescent proteins are generally denatured by heat treatment and thus lose their color. The normal reeling method includes processing by drying and cooking the cocoons near $100^{\circ}C$ before reeling. Therefore, the usual processing method cannot be used for making colored fluorescent silks. To develop a method that is applicable to producing transgenic silk without color loss, we develop reeling methods adequate for a recombinant fluorescence cocoons. It was found that the fluorescence cocoons keep their native color when dried at temperatures lower than $60^{\circ}C$ for 15 h. Also, a new cooking method to soften the fluorescent cocoons was developed: the cocoons were soaked in a solution of 0.2% sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$)/0.1% nonionic surfactant (Triton X100) at $60^{\circ}C$ and then placed under vacuum. The repeated vacuum treatments enabled complete penetration of the solution into the cocoons, and the cocoons were thus homogenously softened and ready for reeling. In this state, the cooked cocoons can be reeled by an automated reeling machine. Our results suggest that drying and cooking of the cocoons at low temperature enables the subsequent reeling of the colored fluorescent silks by an automatic reeling machine without color loss and can produce silks that can be used for making higher value-added silk materials.
To prepare useful foods from Acanthopanax koreanum, extraction of major constituents by water and ethanol solutions were investigated Reflux extractions of 300 g of dried material of particle size less than 0.5 cm, were carried out in 7.5 L of water, or ethanol solutions (30 -95% v/v) for 9 hr at $100^{\circ}C$. The pH values of extracted solutions were 4.0-6.5. The Color b-value of extracted solutions increased as ethanol concentrations dropped and with longer extraction times. The amounts of material in extracts increased rapidly in the first 2-3 hr of extraction. The extract levels from 30-70% ethanol solutions were 0.27-0.47 g/100 g. The main free sugars of extract were sucrose, fructose and glucose. Eleutherosides were extracted rapidly (within 3 hr), and eleutheroside extraction was best in water or in 30-70% ethanol 95% ethanol solutions were less effective. The eleutherosides were extracted to 97% by water or 30-70% ethanol solutions after 3-5 hr. Acanthoic acid extraction was more affected by ethanol level than by extraction time water achieved only trace extinction. In summary, reflux extraction in 40-70% ethanol for 3-5 hr was adequate for the extraction of functional materials from Acanthopanax koreanum.

Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) is currently commonly used material for the reconstruction of bone defects and fixation of joint prosthetics following congenital and acquired causes. Although PMMA has widespread use, it does not possess the ideal mechanical characteristics with osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity required. In order to overcome these problem, addition of bovine bone drived defatting demineralized bone(BDB) powders to a PMMA bone cement was done for improvement of physical property and bone forming characteristics of composite. In order to investigate the influence of BDB reinforcement on the PMMA, we measured physical property of compressive, tensile, flexural strength, and scanning electron microscopic examinations. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The PMMA forms a solid cellular matrix with open cells about $100{\mu}m$ in variable size and incorporating BDB. BDB aggregates inside the cells form a porous network that is accessible from the outer surface. 2. The physical properties were compressive strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, tensile strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, flexural strength of mean $77.53{\pm}6.93MPa$. Scanning electron microscopic examinations were revealed that there was DBD particles form a highly porous agglomerates. BDB can be added PMMA in the form of dried powders, the composites are applicable as bone substitutes. BDB and PMMA mixture is shown to produce a class of composites that due to their microstructure and improved mechanical properties may be suitable for application as bone subsitutes. The mechanical and material properties of the BDB-PMMA bone substitute composites are competitive with those properties of a porous ceramic matrix of other hydroxyapatite and with those of natural bones.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth whitening efficacy of 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strip with primer gel of alkaline condition and containing metallic salts as catalyst in-vitro. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) disk was made by compressing and sintering 0.3 g of mixture of HAP powder and polyvinyl alcohol. This HAP disk was stained using modified Stookey's methods. Main bleaching materials were 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strips and the primer gel containing metallic salts as catalyst and pH controller. Stained HAP disks were allocated to each control or experimental groups by color grade. Stained HAP disks were treated for 30 minutes in $37^{\circ}C/80%$ incubator for wetting, then each primer gel according to control or each test group was spread and strips were attached. After 30 minutes for each group strips were detached and HAP disks were washed, dried then color was measured by colorimeter. Efficacy was evaluated by comparing ${\Delta}L$ values of HAP disks at baseline and after treated. Among some kinds of metallic salts for as catalyst, ferric chloride showed best improvement of efficacy and it was statistically significant (p<0.05) compared to control group. Evaluating whitening efficacy according to various pH of primer, efficacy using primer of alkaline condition was increased significantly (p<0.05) compared to control and primers of acidic or neutral conditions. Evaluating whitening efficacy for time course, efficacy of test group for 30 minutes was similar to that of control for 120 minutes. It can be concluded that 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strips using with primer of alkaline condition and containing ferric chloride showed significantly increased whitening efficacy compared to the case of strips only.

This study was conducted to establish size specification of food material for elementary school meals, researched at school meal scene and surveyed with questionnaires about the management of food materials by workers devoted to preparing school meals. Most subjects (80.7%) answered that students were served smaller size than adults, whereas 11.0% answered that they served different sizes according to school age and 8.3%, that they served same size as adult. About the food material size specification for elementary school student, a majority of respondents reported that 3/4 or 2/4 of adult served size was suitable. The serving size was decided and executed to investigate the actual intake and the preference of students for food size by 2 methods, intake ratio and questionnaire in 6 elementary schools. It showed that intake ratio and preference of students may be changed by serving size. According to the result, food serving size was divided in 3 types per menu and food size was measured precisely using the white board inscripted calibration. Actual food serving size for adult and recommended food serving size for elementary school student was compared. The data collected were coded and used to decide food material specifications for 12 cooked vegetable items, 15 raw vegetable items, 9 kimchi items, 2 fermented fish and fish sauce items, 8 deep-fried items, 5 meat and meat product items, 19 fish items and 5 dried food items.
Recently a new generation of crown and bridge veneering resins containing submicron glass fillers was introduced. These ultrasmall particle hybrid composite materials distinguish themselves, compared with conventional microfill crown and bridge resins, through improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that these composites are suitable for metal free crowns and even bridges using fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of the following veneering composites: Artglass(Heraeus Kulzer Co., Wehrheim, Germany), Estonia(Kuraray Co.. Japan), Sculpture(Jeneric Pentron Co., Wallingford, U.S.A.), and Targis(Ivoclar Co., Schaan Liechenstein). According to manufacturer's instructions, rectangular tensile test specimens measuring $1.5{\times}2.0{\times}4.5mm$ were made using a teflon mold. Whole specimens were divided into two groups. One group was dried in a desiccator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and another group was subjected to thermal cycling($10,000{\times}$) in water($5/55^{\circ}C$). All test specimens were placed in a universal testing machine and loaded until fracture with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Weibull analysis and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The fracture surfaces of specimens were observed in SEM and the aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estenia and Targis resin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Within the limitations imposed in this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Both in drying condition and thermal cycling condition, the highest tensile strength was observed in Estenia testing group(p<0.05). 2. The strength data were at to single-mode Weibull distribution, and the Weibull modulus of all veneering composite resin specimens increased after thermal cycling treatment. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest tensile strength was observed in the Estenia group, and the lowest value was observed in the Targis group. The tensile strength values showed the significant differences between each group(p<0.05) 4. The aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estonia and Targis resin was decreased after light curing, and there was no distinct change after thermal cycling.
Biomass is originally photosynthesized from inorgainic compounds such as $CO_2$, minerals, water and solar energy. Recent studies have shown that anaerobic bacteria have the ability to convert recalcitrant biomass such as cellullosic or chitinoic materials to useful compounds. The biomass containing agricultural waste, unutilized wood and other garbage is expected to utilize as feed, food and fuel by microbial degradation and other metabolic functions. In this study we isolated several anaerobic, cellulolytic and chitinolytic bacteria from rumen fluid, compost and soil to study their related enzymes and genes. The anaerobic and cellulolytic bacteria, Clostridium thermocellum, Clostridium stercorarium, and Clostridium josui, were isolated from compost and the chitinolytic Clostridium paraputrificum from beach soil and Ruminococcus albus was isolated from cow rumen. After isolation, novel cellulase and xylanase genes from these anaerobes were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The properties of the cloned enzymes showed that some of them were the components of the enzyme (cellulase) complex, i.e., cellulosome, which is known to form complexes by binding cohesin domains on the cellulase integrating protein (Cip: or core protein) and dockerin domains on the enzymes. Several dockerin and cohesin polypeptides were independently produced by E. coli and their binding properties were specified with BIAcore by measuring surface plasmon resonance. Three pairs of cohesin-dockerin with differing binding specificities were selected. Two of their genes encoding their respective cohesin polypeptides were combined to one gene and expressed in E. coli as a chimeric core protein, on which two dockerin-dehydrogenase chimeras, the dockerin-formaldehyde dehydrogenase and the dockerin-NADH dehydrogenase are planning to bind for catalyzing $CO_2$ reduction to formic acid by feeding NADH. This reaction may represent a novel strategy for the reduction of the green house gases. Enzymes from the anaerobes were also expressed in tobacco and rice plants. The activity of a xylanase from C. stercorarium was detected in leaves, stems, and rice grain under the control of CaMV35S promoter. The digestibility of transgenic rice leaves in goat rumen was slightly accelerated. C. paraputrificum was found to solubilize shrimp shells and chitin to generate hydrogen gas. Hydrogen productivity (1.7 mol $H_2/mol$ glucos) of the organism was improved up to 1.8 times by additional expression of the own hydrogenase gene in C. paraputrficum using a modified vector of Clostridiu, perfringens. The hydrygen producing microflora from soil, garbage and dried pelletted garbage, known as refuse derived fuel(RDF), were also found to be effective in converting biomass waste to hydrogen gas.
This study was carried out to investigate natural insectifuge materials from tree extractives in order to substitute for organic synthetic insecticides for food wrapping corrugated board. Tree samples were collected, extracted, fractionated with hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, ethylacetate(EtOAc) and $H_2O$, and then freezed dried for further study. EtOAc or $H_2O$ fractions were chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column for isolation and purification, and the isolated compounds were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as NMR and MS. Crude extractives of EtOAc and $H_2O$ fractions were added to the printing ink for corrugated board with the concentration of 2% or 3% based on the weight of the ink, then the prepared ink was printed on the corrugated board to be used for evasion test using larva of indian meal moth(Plodia interpunctella(Hubner)). Robtin, dihydrorobinetin and leucorobinetinidin were isolated from the wood extractives of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and the bark of poplar(Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa) contained many kinds of compounds such as (+)-catechin, naringenin, aromadendrin, eriodictyol, sakuranetin and its glycoside, taxifolin, neosaturanin, salireposide, p-coumaric acid and aesculin. Much of (+)-catechin was isolated from the bark extractives of willow(Salix koreensis) in addition to (+)-gallocatechin and p-coumaric acid and the bark of weeping willow(Salix babylonica) also contained (+)-catechin, (+)-gallocatechin, dihydromyricetin and myricetin.
