  • The DOR (Drainage outlet raising) in the paddy field has been suggested as one of the most important best management practices for the TMDL (Total maximum daily load) management in the technical guidelines by the NIER (National institute of environmental research). However, this method is underestimated and is not well adopted by local governments for the TMDL. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the unit load reduction equation according to the application of DOR in order to expand this equation. The original equation in the guideline was derived using the HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) model for 1 year in Changnyeong. We analyzed the reduction effect of the original equation application by collecting additional long-term monitoring data from the Buan, Icheon, Iksan, and Jeonju. When comparing the reduction loads between the original equation and monitoring results, the evaluation results of the original equation were 11% of the monitoring analysis results, which was underestimated. This means that the original equation needs to be improved. For assessing the equation, the HSPF Paddy-RCH model was established according to the NI ER guideline and evaluated for applicability. The performance results of the model showed a reasonable range by the statistical criteria. Modified equations 1 and 2 were proposed based on the monitoring and modeling results. Modified equation 1 was the method of modifying the original equation's main factors, and modified equation 2 was the method of applying the non-point pollution reduction efficiency according to the rainfall class using the long-term modeling results. At the level of 58.6~64.6% of monitoring data, the difference between them could be further reduced compared to the original equation. The suggested approach will be more reasonable and practicable for decision-makers and will contribute to the TMDL management plans.

  • Background : Complicated exudative pleural fluid collections have traditionally been treated by either closed tube thoracostomy drainage or by open surgical drainage. Complete drainage is important in order to control pleural sepsis, restore pulmonary function, and entrapment. Recently intracavitary fibrinolytic therapy has been advocated as a method to facillitate drainage of complicated exudative pleural effusion and to allow enzymatic debridemant of the restrictive fibrinous sheets covering the pleural surface. The purpose of this study is to prospectively evaluate the effects of image-guided catheter drainage with high dose urokinase(UK) instillation in the treatment of complicated pleural effusions. Patients : Twenty complicated pleural effusion patients that poorly respond to image-guided drainage were allocated to receive UK. There were 8 pneumonia and 12 tuberculosis. Methods : Drugs were diluted in 250 mL normal saline and were infused intrapleurally through the chest tube or pig-tail catheter in a daily dose of 250,000 IU of UK. Response was assessed by clinical outcome, fluid drainage, chest radiography, pleural ultrasound and/or computed tomography. Results : The mean UK instillation time was $1.63{\pm}0.10$. The mean volume drained UK instillation was $381.3{\pm}314.4\;mL$, and post-UK was $321.6{\pm}489.5\;mL$. The follow up duration after UK therapy was mean $212.9{\pm}194.5$ days. We had successful results in 19 cases (95.0%). There were 12 pleural thickenings (60.0%), 2 markedly decreased effusions (10.0%) and 5 cases of no thickening or effusion. There was recurrence after treatment in only one patient(5%) with complicated pleural effusiondue to tuberculosis. Conclusions : Image-guided drainage with high dose UK instillation (250,000 U/day) in complicated pleural effusion is a safe and more effective method than closed thoracostomy drainage. And this management, in turn, can obviate surgery in most cases.

  • Digit that were formerly assessed as non replantable may now be replanted with the help of salvage procedure. In case that, venous repair is either marginal or technically impossible and postoperative venous congestion developed following replantation, are treated with the application of medical leeches. From July 1997 to April 1998, the authors performed arterial anastomosis and venous drainage using medical leeches in 3 children(The age of the patients ranged from 13 months to 6 years.) to have a result of aesthetic and functional success with minimizing the complications. Leech therapy has many advantages, to avoid injuring of finger tip, to decrease focal capillary coagulation, to prevent severe bleeding, and to prevent thromboembolism. The authors conclude that the use of medical leeches shows promise as a safe and effective method of providing temporary venous drainage in replanted digits.

  • Recently, typhoons or heavy rainfalls frequently occurred because of the effect of global warming, which caused serious damage such as landslide of mountain road, debris flow and uplift seepage pressure. Uplift seepage pressure induced on the pavement of mountain roads may cause serious pavement damage. It was known that subsurface drainage method is very effective to reduce uplift seepage pressure. Suitable permeability and stiffness of drainable base is very important to have the effectiveness of subsurface drainage. In this study, optimum particle size distribution of drainable base is investigate to meet the required permeability and bearing capacity of drainable base.

  • It is muck important to determine the intercepting capacities as measures for reducing the load of contamination influenced by CSOs during wet weather period. Intercepting and treating the whole rainfalls can be best measured for reducing the contamination load, but it is not desirable in view of scale and preservation of the wastewater treatment facilities. This study analyzed the quantity and quality of the water in the combined sewer by method of changing the type and size of drainage basin and intercepting capacities in rainfalls, estimate the influence the other CSOs at the change of planned intercepted quantity, and compared the degree of contamination load between the combined system and separate system by examining the influence of the other CSOs at the change of planned intercepted quantity.

  • The characteristics of electroosmosis drainage in clayey soil were investigated, when an electrokinetic technique was applied for the purpose of separating heavy metals in contaminated ground. A series of laboratory tests, considering voltage, zeta potential, pH distribution, and current, were performed for a lead-contaminated kaolin. The results of laboratory tests were compared with numerical analysis of finite difference method. The 1311owing conclusions were obtained: The flow velocity in electroosmosis was very sensitive to the chemical and electrical characteristics of the clay. As the concentration of ion increases, the flow rate decreases and the amount of drainage also decreases as time elapses.

  • Experimental laboratory tests were carried out to assess the effect of fine content and salinity of soils on the measurement of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry). In the test, using soil columm which was made by PVC pipe with the dimension of 25cm height and 20cm diameter, the salinity variation of soil was controlled by the solution which was dissolved NaCl to destilled water in the range of 0-40g.$L^-1$. The fine content of soil was controlled by kaolinite which was mixed with Jumunjin sand in the range of 0-50% to the total dry weight. The water contents of soil tested were measured with the conventional oven dry method beside TDR and compared the these values to figure out the extent of effect. As the results of tests, it was appeared that the water content measurement by TDR can be affected by the salinity level, fine contents, and the degree of saturation of the soil.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of manual lymph drainage (MLD) on edema and the quality of life (QOL) of lymphedema patients in the maintenance phase. Method: Forty five lymphedema patients, who had completed intensive decongestive therapy, were enrolled in this study. All subjects were assigned randomly to two groups: Experimental (MLD) group (n=23) and control (self-MLD) group (n=22). MLD by a specialist was applied with a comfortable pressure for 40~60 minutes in the experimental group and self-MLD was carried out by the control group 5 times a week for 2 weeks. The % edema and a SF-36 questionnaire were used to measure the decrease in edema and the QOL. A paired t-test was used to compare the period, and an independent T-test was used to compare experiment and control groups. Result: The % edema was significantly lower in the experimental group after MLD (p<0.05). The physical, vitality, and mental health scores of the experimental group was significantly higher than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: TMLD by a specialist in the maintenance phase is effective in reducing the % edema and enhancing the QOL of lymphedema patients. Further studies will be needed to determine if there are differences in the effects of many types of treatment methods in the lymphedema treatment.

  • Agricultural drainage salt generated during irrigation of crops in San Joaquin Valley, California, exceeds 600,000 tons annually and cumulates in the field in a rapid rate. As a result, the waste is taking out more farmlands for salt storage and disposal, imposing serious concerns to environment and local agricultural industry. In searching for a potential solution to reduce or eliminate the waste, this research explored feasibility of producing a value -added product, sodium sulfate, from the waste and utilizing the product in textile dyeing. The results indicated that sodium sulfate could be produced from the salt and could be purified by a recrystalization method in a temperature range within the highest and lowest daily temperatures in summer in the alley. The recovered sodium sulfate samples, with purities ranging from 67% to 99.91, were compared with commercially available sodium sulfate in direct dyeing of cotton fabrics. The salt samples recovered from Mendata, California (〉98.8% sodium sulfate) cause little color difference in the dyeing with selected direct dyes, and the purified salt (Ⅲ) (99.91% sodium sulfate) is more applicable for direct dyeing of cotton fabrics if it has no other toxic effects. The recovered sodium sulfate from certain areas in the valley could not be employed in direct dyeing due to the high level of impurities in it.
