  • Systematic finite element analyses on consolidation were performed with various drainage conditions. Numerical analyses were performed using SAGE CRISP2D, a commercial numerical analysis program for the conventional geotechnical engineering practice. For the input properties of the numerical analyses, incremental loading oedometer tests were performed on reconstituted kaolinite samples. Numerical analyses were performed with various drainage conditions such as vertical, radially inward and outward drainage conditions. For the case of radially inward drainage conditions, a series of numerical analyses were performed with varying the diameter of vertical drains. As a result, the lateral deformation and void ratio variation occurred during consolidation for the radially inward or outward drainage conditions. And the variations of the lateral deformation and void ratio did not fully disappear even after the completion of the consolidation and induced the spatial variations of the soil properties. Keywords : finite element analysis of consolidation, various drainage conditions, lateral deformation, spatial variation of soil properties.

  • To select adoptable varieties in paddy soil with relatively high content of soil moisture, the growth characteristics and ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng was investigated in paddy soil with two types of drainage conditions such as poorly and imperfectly drained class, using 4 varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS) Jakyeongjong (JK). The ratio of survived plant in poor drainage conditions was higher than that in imperfect drainage conditions, and the ratio of discolored leaf in the former was lower than that in the latter. The ratio of survived plant was highest in HS, while lowest in YP. The ratio of discolored leaf was lowest in HS, while highest in YP among 4 varieties. Root weight per plant and yield were more distinctly decreased in poor drainage conditions than those in imperfect drainage conditions. Descending order of yield in poor drainage conditions was JK, CP, YP and HS, while CP, YP, JK and HS in imperfect drainage conditions. Varietal difference of rusty colored root was more distinct than that between poor and imperfect drainage conditions. The ratio of rusty colored root was relatively low in CP and JK, while high in YP and HS. Total ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng grown in poor drainage conditions was increased more than that in imperfect drainage conditions due to full growth of root. Regardless of different drainage conditions total ginsenoside content was highest in YP, while lowest in HS among 4 varieties, and there were no distinct difference between CP and JK.

  • In this paper, asymmetric drainage boundaries modeled by exponential functions which can simulate intermediate drainage from pervious to impervious boundary is proposed for the one-dimensional consolidation problem, and the solution for the new boundary conditions was derived. The new boundary conditions satisfy the initial and the steady state conditions, and the solution for the new boundary conditions can be degraded to the conventional solution by Terzaghi. Convergence study on the infinite series solution showed that only one term in the series is needed to meet the precision requirement for larger degree of consolidation, and that more terms in the series for smaller degree of consolidation. Comparisons between the present solution with those by Terzaghi and Gray are also provided.

  • Soil-aggregate system in pavement foundations exist in unsaturated conditions. However, change in water content on foundation layers due to joint and structural cracks during rainfall may cause problems like layer deformations or partial settlements. Therefore, a need exist to evaluate the infiltration and drainage capacity of soil-aggregate foundation system under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. To do that, a laboratory soil-water characteristic curve and permeability under unsaturated conditions are assessed to establish hydraulic properties of geomaterials and limited numerical analysis are performed respectively. As a result, it was found that suction profiles and drainage process was greatly influenced by the initial suction of soil-aggregate system at the time of infiltration, soil water characteristics curves, and hysteresis effects.

  • In this study, dynamic deformation characteristics of sands under dry, saturated drained and undrained conditions were investigated at small to intermediate strains using the modified Stokoe-type torsional shear tests. The equipment was modified to saturate the specimen and to maintain the B-value above 0.99 during the test. On two types of sands, Geumgang sand from Korea and Toyoura sand from Japan, tests were carried out at various drainage conditions, void ratios, and effective confining pressures. Based on the test results, dynamic deformation characteristics, shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D), and/or pore-water pressure were measured with strain amplitude and number of loading cycles. Variations of G and D at small ($\gamma_c<{10}^{-3}\%$) to medium (${10}^{-3}\%<\gamma_c<{10}^{-1}\%$) strains were measured under various drainage conditions, and test results were intensively compared considering drainage conditions.

  • When an underground pipeline runs parallel with DC-powered railways, it suffers from electrolytic corrosion caused by the stray current leaked from the railway negative returns. Perforation due to the electrolytic corrosion may bring about large-scale accidents even cathodically protected systems. Traditionally, bonding methods such as direct drainage, polarized drainage and forced drainage have been used in order to mitigate the damage on pipelines. In particular, the forced drainage method is widely adopted in Seoul. In this paper, we report the analysis of the stray current conditions in Seoul subway DC electrification system.

  • Due to frequent occurrences of concentrated heavy rainfall caused by abnormal climate conditions in recent years, collapses of steep slopes have been occurring frequently due to surface erosion and increased pore water pressure. Various methods are being applied to prevent slope collapses, such as increasing the resistance to movement and reducing pore water pressure. Research on these methods has been consistently conducted as they provide an efficient response to slope collapses by satisfying both the conditions of resistance to movement and pore water pressure simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, we propose an upward slope reinforcement method by burying drainage materials with an upward slope inclination, instead of the conventional horizontal application. This approach aims to satisfy both slope reinforcement and drainage functions effectively, offering a comprehensive solution for slope stabilization. Furthermore, to determine the optimal burial angle that exhibits the most effective reinforcement and drainage effects of the proposed method, we investigated the reinforcement and drainage effects under conditions where the horizontal drainage materials were set at angles ranging from 0° to 60° in increments of 10° on a representative cross-section. Additionally, indoor model experiments were conducted under the conditions of 40°, which showed the most outstanding drainage effect, and 20°, which exhibited the highest safety factor, to validate the numerical analysis results. The results showed that the burial angle of 40° exhibits a relatively higher drainage effect as with the numerical analysis results, while the angle of 20° results in inadequate drainage and observed slope collapse.

  • This paper is results of experimental research on the effect of application of similarity related to permeability of soil on the consolidation behavior as centrifuge modeling of consolidation is performed with the centrifuge model facility. In this research, the permeability of soil was controlled by changing the viscosity of porewater as the mixed water with glycerin was used during the centrifuge model experiments. The effect of drainage path on consolidation was investigated by installing the vertical drains. A serise of centrifuge model tests with conditions of single vertical and radial horizontal drainage were carried out. Kaolinite and Jumunjin standard sand were used as soft clay and surcharges respectively during tests. For testing condition of single vertical drainage considering similarity of permeability, it was found that consolidation with mixed porewater with glycerin was delayed in comparisons sons with test results with water only. For conditions of horizontal drainage with vertical drains, a low permeability by changing the viscosity of pore water resulted in delayed degree of consolidation at an initial stage of consolidation. But, it predicted not much differences in settlement as long as the consolidation time was sufficiently long enough to finish consolidation. Consequently, it was found that similarity in permeability should be considered to be critical for the case of centrifuge model experiments related to consolidation with long drainage path.

  • This study is performed to evaluate performance of the developed pipe when using for underground drainage in fm land, the efficiency of the pipe is examined such as quantity of drainage, water temperature and other field performance in all weather condition. Results of this study, the higher permeability through wall of the pipe is achieved by making various size pores using open-graded aggregate. And in all weather conditions, permeable polymer concrete pipe perform much better than conventional perforated pipes. During rice farming period, quantity of drainage the permeable polymer concrete pipe is 1.25 time greater than conventional perforated pipes. Therefore, use of the permeable polymer concrete pipe is greater advantages when considering collecting and draining capacity compared with conventional perforated pipes.
