  • Background: High-fidelity meteorological data is a prerequisite for the realistic simulation of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive materials near nuclear power plants (NPPs). However, many meteorological models frequently overestimate near-surface wind speeds, failing to represent local meteorological conditions near NPPs. This study presents a new high-resolution (approximately 1 km) meteorological downscaling method for modeling short-range (< 100 km) atmospheric dispersion of accidental NPP plumes. Materials and Methods: Six considerations from literature reviews have been suggested for a new dynamic downscaling method. The dynamic downscaling method is developed based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.6.1, applying high-resolution land-use and topography data. In addition, a new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization has been implemented for a realistic representation of the atmospheric surface-layer momentum transfer. Finally, a year-long simulation for the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, located in southeastern coastal areas, has been made for 2016 and evaluated against operational surface meteorological measurements and the NPPs' on-site weather stations. Results and Discussion: The new dynamic downscaling method can represent multiscale atmospheric motions from the synoptic to the boundary-layer scales and produce three-dimensional local meteorological fields near the NPPs with a 1.2 km grid resolution. Comparing the year-long simulation against the measurements showed a salient improvement in simulating near-surface wind fields by reducing the root mean square error of approximately 1 m/s. Furthermore, the improved wind field simulation led to a better agreement in the Eulerian estimate of the local atmospheric dispersion. The new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization was essential for improved performance, suggesting the importance of the subgrid-scale momentum interactions in the atmospheric surface layer. Conclusion: A new dynamic downscaling method has been developed to produce high-resolution local meteorological fields around the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, which can be used in short-range atmospheric dispersion modeling near the NPPs.

  • Offshore subsea pipelines must be stable against external loadings, which are mostly due to waves and currents. To determine the stability of a subsea pipeline on the seabed, the Morrison equation has been applied with prediction of inertia and drag forces. When the pipeline is placed in a trench, the force acting on it is reduced considerably. Therefore, to consider the stability of a pipeline in a trench, one must employ reduction factors. To investigate the stability of various trenches, we numerically simulated flows over various trenches and compared them with experimental data from PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements. The present results were produced ar Reynolds numbers ranging from 6$\times$10$^3$to 3$\times$10(sub)5 based on the diameter of the cylinder. Quasi-periodic flow patterns computed by large-eddy simulation were compared with experimental data in terms of mean flow characteristics fro typical trench configurations (W/H=1 and H/D=3, 4). The stability for various trench conditions was addressed in terms of mean amplitudes of oscillating lift and drag, and the reduction factor for each case was suggested for pipeline design.

  • In this paper, an approach is developed for relative state estimation of satellite formation flying. To estimate relative states of two satellites, the Extended Kalman Filter Algorithm is adopted with the relative distance and speed between two satellites and attitude of satellite for measurements. Numerical simulations are conducted under two circumstances. The first one presents both chief and deputy satellites are orbiting a circular reference orbit around a perfectly spherical Earth model with no disturbing acceleration, in which the elementary relative orbital motion is taken into account. In reality, however, the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather an oblate spheroid, and both satellites are under the effect of $J_2$ geopotential disturbance, which causes the relative distance between two satellites to be on the gradual increase. A near-Earth orbit decays as a result of atmospheric drag. In order to remove the modeling error, the second scenario incorporates the effect of the $J_2$ geopotential force, and the atmospheric drag, and the eccentricity in satellite orbit are also considered.

  • This study is to develop a system of electric power generation utilizing the wind resources available in the domestic wind environment. We tested drag-type vortical wind turbine models, which have two different types of blades: a flat plate and circular arc shape. Through a performance test, conditions of maximum rotational speed were found by measuring the rpm of wind turbine. The rotational speed was measured by a tachometer in a wind tunnel and the tunnel wind speed was by using a pilot-static tube and a micro manometer. The performance test for a prototype was accomplished by calculating power, power coefficient, torque coefficient from the measurement of torque and rpm by a dynamometer controller From the measurements for miniature turbine models with two different blades, the circular arc shape was found to Produce a maximum rotational speed for the same wind velocity condition. Based on this result, the prototype with the circular arc blade was made and tested. We found that it produces 500W at the wind velocity of 10.8 m/s and the power coefficient was 20%.

  • A stereo PIV measurements in a circulating water channel has been performed to investigate the skin friction reduction mechanism of the outer-layer vertical blades first devised by Hutchins. In a recent PIV measurement study, considerable skin friction reduction was achieved as much as 2.73%~7.95% by outer-layer vertical blades array. In the present study, the influence of vertical blades array upon the characteristics of the turbulent coherent structures was analyzed by proper orthogonal decomposition method. It is observed that the vortical structures are cut and deformed by blades array and also the turbulent intensity and the Reynolds stress were weakened by the blades. These phenomena strongly associate the skin-friction drag reduction mechanism in the turbulent boundary layer flow.

  • Three common medium- rise building forms were physically tested to study their overall wind induced structural response. Emphasis was placed on the torsional response and its correlation with other peak responses. A higher correlation was found between the peak responses than between the general fluctuating parts of the signals. This suggests a common mechanism causing the peak event, and that this mechanism is potentially different to the mechanism causing the general load fluctuations. The measurements show that about 80% of the peak overall torsion occur simultaneously with the peak overall along wind drag for some generic building shapes. However, the peak torsional response occurs simultaneously with only 30%-40% of the peak overall drag for the rectangular model. These results emphasise the importance of load combinations for building design, which are often neglected in the design of medium sized rigid buildings for which the along-wind drag is dominant. Current design wind loading standards from around the world were evaluated against the results to establish their adequacy for building design incorporating wind-induced torsion effects. Although torsion is frequently neglected, for some structural systems it may become more important.

  • Drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements have been made on a range of slanted-base ogive cylinders, using the KANOMAX wind tunnel and balance system. Test Reynolds numbers(based on model maximum diameter) varied from $0.54{\times}10^{5}{\;}to{\;}1.56{\times}10^{5}$. Crossflow velocity maesurement was conducted by 5-hole pitot tube at $Re_{D}=1.46{\times}10^{5}$. For two base angle $({\theta}=30$ and 45 deg.), aerodynamic forces and moment were measured with increasing angle of attack(0~30 deg.). Two types of wake flow were observed, a quasisymetric turbulent closure or a longitudinal vortex flow. Aerodynamic characteristics differ dramatically between the two wake types. It was found that the drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients increased with increasing angle of attack.

  • In recent years, nonlinear dynamic models have been developed for flapping-type energy harvesting systems with a rigid wing, but not for those with a flexible wing. Thus, in this study, flexible wing designs of NACA0012 section are proposed and measurements of the forces of rigid cambered wings, which are used to estimate the performance of the designed wings, are conducted. Polar curves from the measured lift and drag coefficients show that JavaFoil estimation is much closer to the measured values than Eppler over the entire given range of angles of attack. As the camber of the rigid cambered wings is increased, both the lift and drag coefficients increase, in turn increasing the resultant forces. Moreover, the maximum resultant forces for all rigid cambered wings are achieved at the same angle of attack as the maximum lift coefficient, meaning that the lift coefficient is dominant in representations of the wing characteristics.

  • The flow around a circular cylinder which oscillates rotationally with a relatively high forcing frequency has been investigated experimentally using flow visualization and hot-wire measurements. Dominant parameters are Reynolds number (Re), oscillation amplitude $({\theta}_A)$, and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f/f_n$, where $f_f$ is the forcing frequency and $f_n$ is the natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14{\times}10^3,\;{\theta}_A={\pi}/6$, and $0{\leq}F_R{\leq}2$. The effect of frequency ratio $F_R$ on the flow structure of wake was evaluated by measuring wake velocity profile and spectral analysis of hot-wire signal. Depending on the frequency ratio $F_R$, the cylinder wake has 5 different flow regimes. The vortex formation length and vortex shedding frequency are changed significantly before and after the lock-on regime. The drag coefficient was reduced under the condition of $F_R<1.0$ and the maximum drag reduction is about 33% at $F_R=0.8$. However, the drag is increased as $F_R$ increases beyond $F_R=1.0$. This active flow control method can be effective in aerodynamic applications, if the forcing parameters are selected optimally.
