The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional laminar flow over a steadily rotating circular cylinder with a uniform planar shear, where the free-stream velocity varies linearly across the cylinder. It aims to find the combined effect of rotation and shear on the flow. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are performed for the ranges of $-2.5{\le}\alpha{\le}2.5$ and $0{\le}K{\le}0.2$ at a fixed Reynolds number of Re=100, where a and K are respectively the dimensionless rotational speed and velocity gradient. Results show that the positive shear, with the upper side having the higher free-stream velocity than the lower one, favors the effect of the counter-clockwise rotation $(\alpha<0)$ but countervails that of the clockwise rotation $(\alpha>0)$. Accordingly, the absolute critical rotational speed, below which vortex shedding occurs, decreases with increasing K for $(\alpha>0)$, but increases for $\alpha>0$. The vortex shedding frequency increases with increasing \alpha (including the negative) and the variation becomes steeper with increasing K. The mean lift slightly decreases with increasing K regardless of the rotational direction. However, the mean drag and the amplitudes of the lift- and drag-fluctuations strongly depend on the direction. They all decrease with increasing K for $\alpha>0$, but increase for $\alpha<0$. Flow statistics as well as instantaneous flow folds are presented to identify the characteristics of the flow and then to understand the underlying mechanism.
Aerodynamic effects, such as drag force and flow-induced vibration (FIV), on civil engineering structures can be minimized by optimally modifying the structure shape. This work investigates the turbulent wake of a square prism with its faces modified into a sinusoidal wave along the spanwise direction using three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques at Reynolds number $Re_{Dm}$ = 16,500-22,000, based on the nominal width ($D_m$) of the prism and free-stream velocity ($U_{\infty}$). Two arrangements are considered: (i) the top and bottom faces of the prism are shaped into the sinusoidal waves (termed as WSP-A), and (ii) the front and rear faces are modified into the sinusoidal waves (WSP-B). The sinusoidal waves have a wavelength of $6D_m$ and an amplitude of $0.15D_m$. It has been found that the wavy faces lead to more three-dimensional free shear layers in the near wake than the flat faces (smooth square prism). As a result, the roll-up of shear layers is postponed. Furthermore, the near-wake vortical structures exhibit dominant periodic variations along the spanwise direction; the minimum (i.e., saddle) and maximum (i.e., node) cross-sections of the modified prisms have narrow and wide wakes, respectively. The wake recirculation bubble of the modified prism is wider and longer, compared with its smooth counterpart, thus resulting in a significant drag reduction and fluctuating lift suppression (up to 8.7% and 78.2%, respectively, for the case of WSP-A). Multiple dominant frequencies of vortex shedding, which are distinct from that of the smooth prism, are detected in the near wake of the wavy prisms. The present study may shed light on the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of FIV control, in terms of passive modification of the bluff-body shape.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of the skin-friction reduction by vortex control. A vortical system such as a horseshoe vortex, a hairpin vortex, and a wake region was induced around a hemisphere attached on a Perspex flat plate in the circulating water channel. Hairpin vortices were developed from the wake region and horseshoe vortices were formed by an adverse pressure gradient in front of the hemisphere. The horseshoe vortices located on the flank of the hemisphere induced a high momentum flow in the wake region by the direction of their vorticity. This process increased the frequency of the hairpin vortices as well as the frictional drag on the surface of the wake region. To reduce the skin-friction drag, suction control in front of the hemisphere was applied through a hole. Flow visualization was performed to optimize the free-stream velocity, size of the hemisphere, and size of the suction hole. Once the wall suction control mitigated the strength of the horseshoe vortex, the energy supplied to the wake region was reduced, causing the frequency of the hairpin vortex generation to decrease by 36.4 %. In addition, the change in the skin-friction drag, which was measured with a dynamometer connected to a plate in the wake region, also decreased by 2.3 %.
A study has been done for self-starting torque of vertical axis wind turbine blade. It is especially concentrated to evaluate the torque coefficient before starting rotation. Two different aerofoils(AMI903 and AMI904) are proposed to benchmark the possible best blade(supercritical airfoil) for self-starting performance. Torque coefficients in the tangential direction of rotation are given with respect to the angle of attack in terms of drag coefficient and lift coefficient. Torque coefficient shows that the effect of Reynolds number is minimal. The thicker blade(AMI904) between two different proposed airfoils has bigger torque coefficient, which is attributed to lower lift coefficient and higher drag coefficient.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.
The focus of this work is placed on the analysis of the mixture formation mechanism under the evaporative diesel spray of impinging and free conditions. As an experimental parameter, ambient gas density was selected. Effects of density variation of ambient gas on liquid and vapor-phase inside structure of evaporation diesel spray were investigated. Ambient gas density was changed between ${\rho}a=5.0\;kg/m^3$ and $12.3\;kg/m^3$. In the case of impinging spray, the spray spreading to the radial direction is larger due to the decrease of drag force of ambient gas in the case of the low density than that of the high density. On the other hand, in the case of free spray, in accordance with the increase in the ambient gas density, the liquid-phase length is getting short due to the increase in drag force of ambient gas. In order to examine the homogeneity of mixture consisted of vapor-phase fuel and ambient gas in the spray, image analysis was conducted with statistical thermodynamics based on the non-dimensional entropy (S) method. In the case of application of entropy analysis to diesel spray, the entropy value always increases. The entropy of higher ambient density is higher than that of lower ambient gas density during initial injection period.
Although machine learning (ML) techniques have been widely used in various fields of engineering practice, their applications in the field of wind engineering are still at the initial stage. In order to evaluate the feasibility of machine learning algorithms for prediction of wind loads on high-rise buildings, this study took the exposure category type, wind direction and the height of local wind force as the input features and adopted four different machine learning algorithms including k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) and extreme gradient (XG) boosting to predict wind force coefficients of CAARC standard tall building model. All the hyper-parameters of four ML algorithms are optimized by tree-structured Parzen estimator (TPE). The result shows that mean drag force coefficients and RMS lift force coefficients can be well predicted by the GBRT algorithm model while the RMS drag force coefficients can be forecasted preferably by the XG boosting algorithm model. The proposed machine learning based algorithms for wind loads prediction can be an alternative of traditional wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamic simulations.

In popular tourist destinations such as Jeju and Gangwon, electric rental cars are increasingly adopted. However, sudden battery drain due to weather conditions can pose safety issues. To address this, we developed a battery consumption analysis model that considers resistive energy factors such as acceleration, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic drag. Focusing on the effects of ambient temperature and wind speed, the model's performance was evaluated during an empirical validation period from November to December 2023. Comparing predicted and actual state of charge (SoC) across different routes identified ambient temperature, wind speed, and driving time as major sources of error. The mean absolute error (MAE) increased with lower temperatures due to reduced battery efficiency. Higher wind speeds on routes 1 and 6 resulted in larger errors, indicating the model's limitation in considering only tailwinds for aerodynamic drag calculations. Additionally, longer driving times led to higher actual SoC than predicted, suggesting the need to account for varying driver habits influenced by road conditions. Our model, providing more accurate SoC predictions to prevent battery depletion incidents, shows high potential for application in navigation apps for electric vehicle users in tourist areas. Future research should endeavor to the model by including wind direction, HVAC system usage, and braking frequency to improve prediction accuracy further.
Effects of buildings and topography on observation environment of surface wind in central regions of urban areas are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. In order to reflect the characteristics of buildings and topography in urban areas, geographic information system (GIS) data are used to construct surface boundary input data. For each observation station, 16 cases with different inflow directions are considered to evaluate effects of buildings and topography on wind speed and direction around the observation station. The results show that flow patterns are very complicated due to the buildings and topography. The simulated wind speed and direction at the location of each observation station are compared with those of inflow. As a whole, wind speed at observation stations decreases due to the drag effect of buildings. The decrease rate of wind speed is strongly related with total volume of buildings which are located in the upwind direction. It is concluded that the CFD model is a very useful tool to evaluate location of observation station suitability. And it is expected to help produce wind observation data that represent local scale excluding the effects of buildings and topography in urban areas.

In this study, we investigate the characteristics of the drag reduction of a circular cylinder having a detached splitter plate at the wake side. We measure the fluid force on a circular cylinder and visualize the field using particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a high Reynolds number, Re = 10,000. The experimental paraeters used were the width ratios (H/B = 0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B = 0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag-reduction rate of the circular cylinder increased with H/B in the case of the same G/B, and it increased and then decreased with G/B in the case of the same H/B. The vortices of the opposite direction on the upper and lower sides of the detached splitter plate were generated by installing the plate. Reverse flow was caused by the vortices at the wake region of the circular cylinder, and the drag of the circular cylinder was decreased by the reverse flow.
