Analysis of the Dynamic Characteristics on Aerodynamic Loads of Wind Turbine Blade with New Airfoil KA2 (신규 익형 KA2가 적용된 풍력 블레이드의 공력 하중에 대한 동특성 해석)

  • This paper proposes a novel airfoil named "KA2" for the blade of the wind turbine systems. Dynamic loads characteristics are analyzed and compared using aerodynamic data of ten airfoils including the proposed airfoil. The blade is divided into the sixteen elements in the longitudinal direction of the blade for applying the Blade Element Method Theory (BEMT) method, and in each element, torque, thrust, and pitching moment are calculated using turbulent time varying wind speed and aerodynamic data of each wing. Additionally, each force and torque is accumulated in the whole region of the blade for the estimation of representative values. The magnitude of such forces is comparatively analyzed for different airfoils. The angle of attack is constant below the rated wind speed due to the fact that the tip speed ratio is kept at the constant value, and it increases in the region of over rated wind speed as the tip speed ratio decreasing with constant rated rpm and increasing wind speed. Such increase in the angle of attack causes the changes of the force acting on the airfoil with different characteristics of lift and drag in the stall region of each different airfoil. Even though the mean wind speed is in the rated speed in a given time, because of the turbulence, it has either the over rated or under rated speed most of the time. Furthermore, the dynamic properties of each force are analyzed in this rated wind speed in order to objectively understand the dynamic properties of the blades which are designed based on the different airfoils. These dynamic properties are also compared by the standard deviation of time varying characteristics. Moreover, the output characteristics of the wind turbine are investigated with different airfoils and wind speeds. Based on these investigations, it was revealed that the proposed airfoil (KA2) is well applicable to the blade with passive pitch control system.

Grid Tests for Large Eddy Simulation of Transitional Flows around Turbulence Stimulators (난류 촉진기 주위 천이 유동의 대형 와 모사를 위한 격자 테스트)

  • Large eddy simulations of transitional flows around a stud installed on a flat plate have been performed to investigate an influence of grid resolution on turbulence stimulation by the stud. Because streamwise vortical structures generated by the stud played an important role in turbulence stimulation of boundary layer, streamwise vorticity was compared in the wake region behind the stud when the number of grids increased or decreased by a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in streamwise, wall-normal and spanwise directions respectively. The streamwise vorticity was shown to be mainly affected by spanwise grid resolution (${\Delta}z^+$) rather than streamwise and wall-normal grid resolution. In a viewpoint of numerical efficiency as well as physical resolution, ${\Delta}x^+{_{min}}=7.6$, ${\Delta}x^+{_{max}}=41$, ${\Delta}y^+{_{wall}}=0.25$ and ${\Delta}z^+=7.6$ was found to be desirable. Once a grid resolution was determined in each direction, a grid verification was carried out by increasing or decreasing the grid resolution y a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in all directions. The grid uncertainties of pressure and drag coefficients were 21.6 % and 2.8 % while the corrected uncertainties were 2 % and 0.3 %, respectively.

Precise Orbit Determination of LEO Satellite Using Dual-Frequency GPS Data (이중 주파수 GPS 데이터를 이용한 저궤도 위성의 정밀궤도결정)

  • KOorea Multi-purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-5 will be launched at 550km altitude in 2010. Accurate satellite position(20 cm) and velocity(0.03 cm/s) are required to treat highly precise Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) image processing. Ionosphere delay was eliminated using dual frequency GPS data and double differenced GPS measurement removed common clock errors of both GPS satellites and receiver. SAC-C carrier phase data with 0.1 Hz sampling rate was used to achieve precise orbit determination(POD) with ETRI GNSS Precise Orbit Determination(EGPOD) software, which was developed by ETRI. Dynamic model approach was used and satellite's position, velocity, and the coefficients of solar radiation pressure and drag were adjusted once per arc using Batch Least Square Estimator(BLSE) filter. Empirical accelerations for sinusoidal radial, along-track, and cross track terms were also estimated once per revolution for unmodeled dynamics. Additionally piece-wise constant acceleration for cross-track direction was estimated once per arc. The performance of POD was validated by comparing with JPL's Precise Orbit Ephemeris(POE).

  • As environmental regulations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s strategy to reduce greenhouse gases(GHG) are strengthened, technology development such as eco-friendly ships and alternative fuels is expanding. As part of this, ship propulsion technology using energy reduction and wind propulsion technology is emerging, especially in shipping companies and shipbuilders. By securing wind propulsion technology and introducing empirical research into shipbuilding and shipping, a high value-added market using eco-friendly technology can be created. Moreover, by reducing the fuel consumption rate of operating ships, GHG can be reduced by 6-8%. Rotor Sail (RS) technology is to generate a hydrodynamic lift in the vertical direction of the cylinder when the circular cylinder rotates at a constant speed and passes through the fluid. This is called the Magnus effect, and this study attempted to propose a plan to increase propulsion efficiency through a numerical analysis study on turbulence flow characteristics around RS, a wind power assistance propulsion system installed on a ship. Therefore, CL and CD values according to SR and AR changes were derived as parameters that affect the aerodynamic force of the RS, and the flow characteristics around the rotor sail were compared according to EP application.

  • In this study, the resistance test, the vertical static angle of the attack test and VPMM test will be conducted to estimate the maneuverability of underwater vehicles with ahead propeller. The vertical static test will be conducted within the range of -40deg to 40deg, to investigate the cross-flow drag at high incidence angles. The tests will be conducted by dividing the propeller rotation into a case in which the propeller rotates at a specific rpm, and a case in which the propeller rotates naturally, according to the towing speed. Hydrodynamic coefficients of vertical direction will be estimated by the captive model tests. Additionally, the vertical dynamic stability index based on estimated hydrodynamic coefficients will be calculated and the impact of the propeller revolution state on the index will be investigated. The results are expected to be used as reference test data for underwater vehicles with ahead propeller.

Deformation history of Precambrian metamorphic rocks of Sobaegsan Massif in Giseong-myeon area, Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea (경상북도 울진군 기성면 지역에서 소백산육괴 선캠브리아기 변성암류의 변형작용사)

  • This study clarifies the deformation history of Precambrian metamorphic rocks of Sobaegsan Massif (Wonnam Formation, Pyeonghae granite gneiss, Hada leucogranite gneiss) in Giseong-myeon area, Uljin-gun, Korea. It is based on the geometric and kinematic features and the developing sequence of multi-deformed rock structures. It also reviews the extension of Yecheon Shear Zone and the relative occurrence time of each deformation phase from previous researches. It suggests that the geological structure was formed at least through five phases of deformation after formation of their gneissosity or schistosity. (1) The first phase of deformation took placed under compression of ENE-WSW direction, forming NNW trending regional foliation and very tight isoclinal fold. The general trend of gneissosity or schistosity is inferred to be ENE before the first phase of deformation, being rearranged into NNW by the isoclinal folding. (2) The second phase of deformation formed ENE trending regional foliation and tight, isoclinal, rootless intrafolial folds under compression of NNW-SSE direction [occurrence time: after deposition (Permian age) of Dongsugok Formation, Pyeongan Croup, Janggunbong area]. (3) The third phase of deformation occurred by dextral ductile shearing on the regional foliation, forming stretching lineation of ENE trend and S-C mylonitic structure (after intrusion of Hesozoic homblende granite, Sangunmyeon area-before intrusion of Mesozoic Chunyang granite, Janggunbong area). (4) The fourth phase occurred under (E)NE-(W)SW compression, forming (N)NW trending open fold. (5) The fifth phase took place under N-S compression, forming NNE and NNW trending conjugate strike-slip faults, E-W trending thrust-slip faults, and drag folds related to these fault movements. The deformed structures of fourth and fifth phases result from tectonic movement associated with the developing of the Gyeongsang Basin in Cretaceous age, and it partially rearranged the general ENE trend of the regional foliation in the study area. It also suggests that the Yecheon Shear Zone of E-W trending extends into this area but the ductile shear deformation is weakly developed.

Analysis of Wind Vorticity and Divergence in the High-latitude Lower Thermosphere: Dependence on the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) (고위도 하부 열권 바람의 소용돌이도와 발산 분석: 행성간 자기장(IMF)에 대한 의존도)

  • To better understand the physical processes that control the high-latitude lower thermospheric dynamics, we analyze the divergence and vorticity of the high-latitude neutral wind field in the lower thermosphere during the southern summertime for different IMF conditions. For this study the National Center for Atmospheric Research Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR-TIEG CM) is used. The analysis of the large-scale vorticity and divergence provides basic understanding flow configurations to help elucidate the momentum sources that ulti-mately determine the total wind field in the lower polar thermosphere and provides insight into the relative strengths of the different sources of momentum responsible for driving winds. The mean neutral wind pattern in the high-latitude lower thermosphere is dominated by rotational flow, imparted primarily through the ion drag force, rather than by divergent flow, imparted primarily through Joule and solar heating. The difference vorticity, obtained by subtracting values with zero IMF from those with non-zero IMF, in the high-latitude lower thermosphere is much larger than the difference divergence for all IMF conditions, indicating that a larger response of the thermospheric wind system to enhancement in the momentum input generating the rotational motion with elevated IMF than the corresponding energy input generating the divergent motion. the difference vorticity in the high-latitude lower thermosphere depends on the direction of the IMF. The difference vorticity for negative and positive $B_y$ shows positive and negative, respectively, at higher magnetic latitudes than $-70^{\circ}$. For negative $B_z$, the difference vorticities have positive in the dusk sector and negative in the dawn sector. The difference vorticities for positive $B_z$ have opposite sign. Negative IMF $B_z$ has a stronger effect on the vorticity than does positive $B_z$.

The First Discovery of Quaternary Fault in the Western Part of the South Yangsan Fault - Sinwoo Site (양산단층 남부 이서 지역에서 최초로 발견된 제4기 단층 - 신우지점)

  • During the detailed geological survey around the southern Yangsan Fault, we newly found a Quaternary fault outcrop, which cuts unconsolidated sediments. The fault named the Sinwoo site, located in the Sinwoo pasture, Miho-ri, Duseo-myeon, Ulsan metropolitan city, is the first discovered Quaternary fault near the western part of the south Yangsan Fault. In this study, we provide information on characteristics of fault geometry and unconsolidated sediment at Sinwoo site based on the analysis data of topography, drainage, and lineament around the study site. The fault site is situated at pediment slope, but fan-shaped middle terrace, as well as thick sediment exposed at low terrace, indicates that the unconsolidated sediments have been deposited in the alluvial fan environment. The drainage develops to the third-order drainage system, and the first and the second drainage system meet at right angles to each other and form a radial drainage pattern. In addition, the NE-SW direction lineaments can be identified on the basis of the curvature of the river and the step of the topographic relief, running over the Sinwoo site. The fault of $N30-35^{\circ}E/79-82^{\circ}SE$ shows ~ 5.8 m apparent vertical offset and dominantly reverse-slip sense based on slickenline, rotation of pebbles, and drag folding at footwall. However, some discontinuous sediments observed in the footwall are interpreted as fissure-filling materials due to the strike-slip movement. Now, we are under multidisciplinary investigations of additional field survey and age dating in order to determine the evolution of Sinwoo site fault during the Quaternary.
