A Comparative Study on Variability of Oxidants Out of Air Pollution Materials in Seoul: Metropolitan vs. Suburban Area (서울지역의 대기오염 물질중 산화성 물질의 지역간 차이에 대한 연구)

  • A Continuous monitoring of Air Pollution in city of Seoul was carried out from January 1 to December 31 of 1979 at two selected sites, Kwanghwamun observatory and Kwanag observatory. The measured data were averaged on monthly basis. The maximun value of oxidant pollution was observed in July, and the minimum in February. It is the purpose of this study to determine the effect of hydrocarbon, nitrogenoxide, wind velocity and ambient temprature on the observed values of oxidant pollution for the above two months. The results of the study may be summarized as follows. 1) The oxidant concentration in February was higher than in July by about 2 times in both downtown area and the suburbia. The concentration in downtown area was $25.75\pm 4.75ppb$, and that in suburbia was $29.83\pm 5.16ppb$. As for the oxidant concentration in July, it was observed that the suburban area ($26.464\pm 7.59ppb$) had about 2.8 times higher value than the downtown area ($9.284\pm 1.55ppb$). 2) The peak oxidant concentration of suburban area during the daytime is occured from noon to 5:00 P.M.. These patterns are similar to the classical patterns, but the peak Oxidant Concentration of downtown area in February was occured at 9:00A.M. 3) The overall level of nitrogen oxide pollution was much higher in downtown area than in suburban area. Two peaks of nitrogen oxide concentration occured at 10 A.M. and 12 midnight in downtown area. This observation agrees with the report that the air pollution is higher in the area where the pollution sources are concentrated. 4) The multiple correlation analysis for the oxidant and the other variables measured in February in downtown area showed close correlation with nitrogen oxide and ambient temprature. The multiple correlation coefficient of oxidant with nitrogen oxide was 0.872, and that with nitrogen oxide and temperature simultaneously was 0.903.   • During the period from June 1st 1971 to November 30 th 1971, studies on air pollution were made in Kwangju city. The city was divided into 6 areas; the downtown area, the semi-downtown area, the heavy traffic area, the commercial area, the residential area, the park area, 13 surveying sites were selected each representing the characteristics of the area. The Measurement methods which were used are described below. Sulfur oxides were measured by $PbO_2$ cylinder method, sulfur dioxides ($SO_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO) by the MSA & Kitakwa detector, dustfall by the Deposit gauge method, and the noise levels by the Kanomax soundlevel meter. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mean value of sulfur oxides in Kwangju city was $1.16mg\;SO_3/day/100cm^2\;PbO_2$, ranging from $0.45mg\;SO_3/day/100cm^2\;PbO_2$ to $3.10mg\;SO_3/day/100cm^2\;PbO_2$. 2. The mean values of sulfur oxides according to its specific area in the city were $1.45mg\;SO_3/day/100cm^2\;PbO_2$ in heavy traffic area, 1.36 in downtown area, 1.23 in semi-downtown area, 1.11 in commercial area, 0.96 in residential area, and 1.07 in park area, respectively. 3. The average concentration of sulfur dioxide was 0.063 ppm from 2 to 5 P.M in Kwangju city. 4. The average concentrations of sulfur dioxides according to its specific area, from 2 to 5 P.M, in the city were 0.084 ppm in heavy traffic area & downtown area, 0.067 in commercial area, 0.053 in semi-downtown area, 0.052 in residential area, and 0.036 in park area. 5. The average concentration of carbon monoxide was 22.3 ppm from 2 to 5 P.M, in Kwangju city. 6. The average concentrations of carbon monoxide according to its specific area, from 2 to 5 P.M, in the city were 27.0 ppm in downtown area, 26.3 in semi-downtown area, 23.0 in heavy traffic area, 21.7 in commercial area, 20.0 in residential arera, and 17.6 in park area. 7. The mean value of dusifall in Kwangju city was $29.28ton/km^2/month$, ranging from $9.85ton/km^2/month$ to $66.34ton/km^2/month$. 8. The mean values of dustfall according to its specific area in the city were $50.37ton/km^2/month$ in semi-downtown area, 42.76 in heavy traffic area, 34.67 in downtown area, 17.77 in commercial area, 14.40 in park area, and 14.76 in residential area. 9. The mean values of the soluble dust in Kwangju city was $10.23ton/Km^2/month$ and that of the insoluble dust was $19.05ton/Km^2/month$. 10. The mean value of noise level in Kwangju city was 62 phon, ranging from 37 phon to 88 phon. 11. The mean values of noise level according to its specific area in the city were 76 phon in heavy traffic area, 67 in semi-downtown area, 64 in downtown area, 59 in commercial area, 52 in part area, and 50 in residential area.

Social Stratification of the Great Seoul Area: A Comparative Study Using Two Types of Population (상주인구와 주간인구의 계층구조 비교분석 : 서울을 중심으로)

  • This study aims a comparative analysis of social stratification in the Great Seoul area using two types of population. One type of population is a resident population(常住人口), and the other is a daytime population주간인구(晝間人口). In most demographic studies, only resident population have been considered. There has been less attention to daytime population. However, a resident population have a character of night population야간인구(夜間人口). In fact, most people move and work in the areas where they do not live in everyday life in the contemporary period, which indicates that the concept of a daytime population is more significant than that of a resident population. This study reveals that a number of people, on the one hand. come together to the downtown area to work or study while they live in other areas. On the other hand, resident population in downtown area do not move so much. When we analyze the social stratification structure of the Great Seoul area using a resident population, we find that the resident population of downtown area consist of those of low social status. On the contrary, the daytime population of downtown area in Seoul consist of those of high social status. This means that most people of high social status live in the southern area of Seoul or outside Seoul, but make a living in downtown area in everyday life. From this study, we find that the concept of a daytime population is as important as that of a resident population. The more residence becomes separate from work place, the more the significance of the concept of a daytime population grows in making policy as wall as in demographic studies. This study implies that we need to pay more attention to the concept of daytime population in demographic and sociological Studies.

  • This study is based on the need to reform mixed use plan of school facilities considering the characteristics of depressed downtown area. It started with the object to make a plan by deducting function of place required and corresponded to the characteristics of depressed downtown area in Pohang city. As the result of researching present status and the characteristics of six elementary schools in Pohang which the number of student has decreased, it is found that they are required to have change in the region of depressed downtown area which have fallen behind and obsolete school facilities which idle classrooms have increased and to have reformations of a city are characterized by 5 types as poor life environment, lack of cultural facilities as community institution, poor open-space and ecological environment, non-activation of conventional market and contraction of commerce industry by outflow of industry, transfer of administration operation function and etc. and the region of school under researching shows these characteristics. I planed the mixed use program with factors of local community facility, status of school facility use and depressed area's characteristics. Finally, I propose the mixed use plan of school facilities as the strong point of sustainable development which influences on and be influenced by regional characteristics and structure of city.

The Study on the Downtown Spatial Functional Analysis and Downtown Classification using GIS (GIS를 활용한 도심 공간기능분석과 유형화에 관한 연구)

  • The subjects were fifteen dong at downtown of Busan. LQ index and cluster analysis were used to research space functions of downtown in both years, that is to say, 2000 and 2005. At the analysis of LQ index in 2000, the secondary industries were specialized at traditional markets as well as large-scaled commercial districts, while the tertiary industries were done at financial business districts. LQ index in 2005 did not make change mostly comparing with the one in 2000: But, main businesses at downtown that belonged to the tertiary industries rapidly dwindled at old downtown to make appearance at Seomyeon of new downtown. Main businesses at old downtown in the past moved to new downtown to dwindle main functions at old downtown. The cluster analysis was done by using LQ index to classify into three clusters. The first cluster was old downtown that functions of downtown dwindle, and the second cluster was residence area, and the third cluster was the area where space function at downtown was very much active. The findings were as follow: Firstly, various kinds of urban regeneration plans should be made to control dwindling of old downtown and to establish comprehensive and systematic plans on new downtown. Secondly, downtown space functions could be placed depending upon specialization of each industry so that industries being suitable to the area should be introduced to construct development base.

Comparison and Analysis of Radiation Environment between Downtown and Suburban Area during Summer Season (대구 도심과 인근 교외지역의 하절기 복사 성분 특성 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to compare and analyze of radiation environment between downtown and suburban area by observation of short, diffuse and long-wave radiation during summer season. The followings are main results from this study. 1) The trends of long-wave radiation is increasing from May to August and the variation of daily range is decreased. It is confirmed that the temperature was closely relevant to long wave radiation. 2) During observation period, suburban area is higher than downtown the value of direct solar radiation. 3) There are much direct solar radiation in suburban area than downtown. But, it was measured much more horizontal solar radiation at the downtown area. From the this result, we can conclude that diffuse radiation play a important role at horizontal solar radiation.

  • Ambient concentrations of gaseous, particulate phase ionic species, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) were measured at two monitoring sites in the City of Ulsan during August 1997: one in industrial area and the other in downtown area. At each site, a three- stage filter pack sampler was used to collect fine particles and gaseous species, and air for VOC analysis was collected in stainless steel canisters. Concentrations of the ionic species at both sites were similar to each other. The VOC concentrations at the industrial site were approximately twice higher than those at the downtown site. This might be mainly due to the release of VOCs from the petrochemical industries. Daily variations of VOC concentrations at the industrial site were higher than that at the downtown site. This might be explained by the fact that emissions from industries were more irregular than those in downtown. The VOC concentrations in downtown were affected by both the local emissions and the emission from the petrochemical industries. The concentrations of selected hazardous organic components (HAPs) at the industrial site were similar to those of Yocheon industrial area but slightly higher than other cites and industrial areas, while those at the downtown site were comparable to those in other urban areas.

Measurement and Analysis of Heat Island in summer in Gwangju (광주지역의 여름철 열섬현상 측정 및 분석)

  • This study aims to identify the degree of heat island in summer in Gwangju. For the purpose the city was classified according to use and surface components and temperature of the city for 24 hours was measured. The period of measurement was from August 11 to 13. 2003(two days). As a result of the measurement, the daily standard temperature of the central business areas and downtown areas was about $26^{\circ}C$. That of new residential areas neighboring the downtown was $25.1^{\circ}C$, and that of the outer residential areas was $23.4^{\circ}C$. In comparison with the result that temperatures of the Gwangju University playground and the Gwangju Weather Bureau were $23.1^{\circ}C$ and $23.3^{\circ}C$ respectively, the temperature of the downtown was about $2.7^{\circ}C$ Higher and that of the new residential area in downtown was about $1.8^{\circ}C$ higher. And it was demonstrated that the downtown outer road under Mt. Mudeung is a low-temperature zone. When temperature of the city was measured based on surface components, the daily standard temperature of Gwangju Stream Bok-gae area was the highest, $24.2^{\circ}C$, followed by $23.6^{\circ}C$ of the downtown stream and $22.2^{\circ}C$ of the greens (city park) and the waterside area.

  • This study examines and analyzes residential environment and factors with partial region of Chungjang-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju based on land register and questionnaire. Consequently, most of residents are in their forties or over and working at downtown or place near it. It is found that rate of their own house is high and they live in the current house over 10 years. Residential factors at downtown area include its convenience, distance to workplace, convenient transportation and easy use of cultural and commercial facilities, but their consciousness of residence shows a low satisfaction with children education, air pollution, noise, parking facilities, green zone for making community, resting place, sunshine, view and privacy.

  • Jung-gu in Daegu is an old downtown that has led the development of Daegu as a representative center and a commercial area with historicity and placeless. However, an urban center is losing its vitality due to the transfer of city halls and the development of new towns. The downtown area that is still important in a city should lead urban development continuously so that it needs to return its vitality by rehabilitating the weakling urban center. Accordingly this study makes the school which shows drop in the number of students and classes in the school buildings located in Jung-gu, Daegu. Consequently this study figures out a cause for the occurrence of unused school facilities and find a solution as the space for local residents by investigating the facilities of schools, the surroundings, the reality, and the present condition. This study is conducted to examine actual situations of a downtown area that has gone through development and history of Daegu as a center. To this end, it aims to seek for methods to activate the city by relating the practical use of unused school facilities.
