Losses on the turbine consist of the mechanical loss, tip clearance loss, secondary flow loss and blade profile loss etc.,. More than 60 % of total losses on the turbine is generated by the two latter loss mechanisms. These losses are directly related with the reduction of turbine efficiency. In order to provide a new design methodology for reducing losses and increasing turbine efficiency, a two-dimensional axial-type turbine blade shape is modified by the optimization process with two-dimensional compressible flow analysis codes, which are validated by the experimental results on the VKI turbine blade. A turbine blade profile is selected at the mean radius of turbine rotor using on a heavy duty gas turbine, and optimized at the operating condition. Shape parameters, which are employed to change the blade shape, are applied as design variables in the optimization process. Aerodynamic, mechanical and geometric constraints are imposed to ensure that the optimized profile meets all engineering restrict conditions. The objective function is the pitchwise area averaged total pressure at the 30% axial chord downstream from the trailing edge. 13 design variables are chosen for blade shape modification. A 10.8 % reduction of total pressure loss on the turbine rotor is achieved by this process, which is same as a more than 1% total-to-total efficiency increase. The computed results are compared with those using 11 design variables, and show that optimized results depend heavily on the accuracy of blade design.
The application of the pervaporation process in biotechnology is rapidly growing. A two stage pervaporation process can be applied to the downstream processing of ethanol fermentation. In this paper, the second stage process in which the water-ethanol composition was 50:50 wt.% was investigated in more detail by using Nylon 4 and its blended membranes containing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Nylon 4 membranes were tested for compositions at 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$. Nylon 4 membranes had a separation factor of 4.18 with a permeability of $0.69kg/m^2hr$ at water-ethanol composition of 50:50 wt.%, while nylon 4-PVA blended membranes crosslinked by 5 Mrad gamma-ray irradiation showed a higher separation factor of 10.56 with permeability $0.55kg/m^2hr$ at the same composition. Nylon 4 also showed a high separation factor 27.8 at the ethanol-water azeotropic composition among the homopolymer membranes.
Succinic acid is an important material in industries producing biodegradable polymers, food and pharmaceutical products, and green solvents. Furthermore, succinate fermentation is a novel process due to the fixation of $CO_2$ into succinate during fermentation. However, the impurities in fermentation broth make the separation process of succinic acid be difficult. Reactive extraction has been proposed to be an effective primary separation step of succinic acid from dilute fermentation broth. This article presents the principles of reactive extraction along with the characteristics of tertiary amino extractants. A brief overview on the current research on reactive extraction of succinic acid is presented. Finally, for the succinic acid separation, reactive extraction as a primary step is suggested in the whole downstream process for succinic acid from fermentation broth.

This study was initiated to evaluate the effect of HRT(hydraulic retention time) on removal efficiencies of organic matter (C), nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in municipal wastewater for suspenced-growth processes(MLE; Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) and hybrid process(Modified-Dephanox). M-Dephanox process was designed to improve the performance of Dephanox process on denitrification efficiency. As the results, removal efficiencies of C, N and P in M-Dephanox process, which is hybrid process, were higher than those in MLE, which is suspended-growth process. Especially, nitrification inhibition of MLE was observed more severely than M-Dephanox as hydraulic retention time was reduced from 6 hr to 3.5 hr. Nitrification in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox, at short HRT, was so excellent that ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency in nitrification reactors of M-Dephanox was about 92% at 1.59 hr of HRT of nitrification reactors, however, nitrification in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox was affected severely by organic matter entering to nitrification reactors from downstream settler. It was observed that reducing of HRT in whole process resulted from reducing of HRT in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox.
In this study for the development of area due to the increasing of industry, population and spreading of urbanization is rapidly increasing but about seventy percent of our nation's areas consists of the mountainous districts. In such case, when those areas have the heavy rains break, they are washed away by a fast-flowing stream of a valley and overflowed. Thus it could result on human life and property damage and also the widespread of flood damage in the downstream area. To decrease those damage, the construction of flood control reservoir is necessary. This research was aim to construct the flood runoff models of a mountainous small district and to determine the probability rainfall by analyzing precipitation. The study also examined the effects of location and size of flood control reservoir on flood reduction. The result showed that the construction of detention basin was an effective way to ensure the safety of flood control and multiple detention basin had superior result for reducing amount of runoff in the down stream area than the single detention basin.

This paper investigates the effects of acoustic forcing on NOx emissions and mixing process in the near field region of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. The resonance frequency was selected to force the coaxial air jet acoustically, because the resonance frequency is effective to amplify the forcing amplitude and reduce NOx emissions. When the resonance frequency is acoustically excited, a streamwise vortex is formed in the mixing layer between the coaxial air jet and coflowing air. As the vortex develops downstream, it entrains both ambient air and combustion products into the coaxial air jet to mix well. In addition, the strong vortex pulls the flame surface toward the coaxial air jet, causing intense chemical reaction. Acoustic excitation also causes velocity fluctuations of coaxial air jet as well as fuel jet but, the maximum value of centerline fuel velocity fluctuation occurs at the different phases of $\Phi$=$180^{\circ}$ for nonreacting case and $\Phi$=$0^{\circ}$ for reacting case. Since acoustic excitation enhances the mixing rate of fuel and air, the line of the stoichiometric mixture fraction becomes narrow. Finally, acoustic forcing at the resonance frequency reduces the normalized flame length by 15 % and EINOx by 25 %, compared to the flame without acoustic excitation.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in many parts of the world. Its development is a multi-step process involving three distinct stages, initiation that alters the molecular message of a normal cell, followed by promotion and progression that ultimately generates a phenotypically altered transformed malignant cell. Reports have suggested an association of the phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway with colon tumorigenesis. Activation of Akt signaling and impaired expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) (a negative regulator of Akt) has been reported in 60-70% of human colon cancers and inhibitors of PI3K/Akt signaling have been suggested as potential therapeutic agents. Around 80% of human colon tumors possess mutations in the APC gene and half of the remainder feature ${\beta}$-catenin gene mutations which affect downstream signaling of the PI3K/Akt pathway. In recent years, there has been a great focus in targeting these signaling pathways, with natural and synthetic drugs reducing the tumor burden in different experiment models. In this review we survey the role of PI3K/Akt/mTOR and Wnt signaling in CRC.

The p53-inducible gene 3 (PIG3), initially identified as a gene downstream of p53, plays an important role in the apoptotic process triggered by p53-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Recently, several studies have suggested that PIG3 may play a role in various types of cancer. However, the functional significance of PIG3 in cancer remains unclear. Here, we found that PIG3 was highly expressed in human colon cancer cell lines compared to normal colon-derived fibroblasts. Therefore, we attempted to elucidate the functional role of PIG3 in colon cancer. PIG3 overexpression increases the colony formation, migration and invasion ability of HCT116 colon cancer cells. Conversely, these tumorigenic abilities were significantly decreased in in vitro studies with PIG3 knockdown HCT116 cells. PIG3 knockdown also attenuated the growth of mouse xenograft tumors. These results demonstrate that PIG3 is associated with the tumorigenic potential of cancer cells, both in vitro and in vivo, and could play a key oncogenic role in colon cancer.

In this study, his technique was applied to a GDI spray in order to investigate the mixture distribution. In addition, the homogeneity degree and diffusion effect according to ambient temperature in the high pressure chamber were analyzed by using an entropy analysis method. From this experiment, we could find that entropy analysis is very effective method for the analysis of mixture formation, and the entropy values increase with the progress of uniformity in diffusion Process. we tried to provide the fundamental data for parameter which effects on the spray macroscopic characteristics with mixture ratio of diesel and gasoline. In addition, the mixture formation was analyzed by using entropy analysis. The entropy analysis is based on the concept of statistical entropy, and it identifies the degree of homogeneity in the fuel concentration. From the entropy analysis results we could find that the direct diffusion phenomena is a dominant factor in the formation of a homogeneous mixture at downstream of GDI spray especially in vaporizing conditions. As to increasing ambient temperature and increasing gasoline rate, the entropy intensity using the statistic thermodynamics method is increased because evaporation rate is higher gasoline than diesel.
The sphingomyelin cycle and ceramide generation have been recognized as potential growth suppression signals in mammalian cells. Ceramide has been shown to induce differentiation, cell growth arrest, senescence, and apoptosis. Although the intracelluar target for the action of ceramide remains unknown, recent studies have demonstrated the role of cytosolic ceramideactivated protein phosphatase(CAPP). In this study, the cytotoxic effect of C2-ceramide, a synthetic cellpermeable ceramide analog, on HEp-2 cells and the mechanism by which ceramide induces cell death were investigated. The addition of exogenous C2-ceramide resulted in a concentration dependent cell death. Okadaic acid, a potent inhibitor of CAPP, enhanced ceramide-mediated cell death, which suggests that CAPP is not involved in this process. To understand the mechanism of action of ceramide, we studied the relationship between ceramide and c-Myc and pRb which are defined components of cell growth regulation. Western blot analyses revealed that C2-ceramide (10${\mu}M$) induced c-Myc down-regulation, but there were no significant changes in pRb. However, treatment of okadaic acid (10 nM) enhanced c-Myc and pRb down-regulation. Reduction of the amount of c-Myc and pRb occurred during HEp-2 cell death. These results suggest that the cytotoxic effect of ceramide in HEp-2 cells may not be mediated through the action of CAPP and that the downstream target for ceramide is c-Myc and pRb.
