  • The objective of this work is to investigate fluid mixing phenomena related to pressurized thermal shock(PTS) in a pressurized water reactor(PWR) vessel downcomer during transient cooldown with direct vessel injection(DVI) using test models. The test model designs were based on ABB Combustion Engineering(C-E) System 80+ reactor geometry. A cold leg small break loss-of-coolant accident(LOCA) md a main steam line teak were selected as the potential PTS events for the C-E System 80+. This work consist of two parts. The first part provides the visualization tests of the fluid mixing between DVI fluid and existing coolant in the downcomer region, and the second part is to compare the results of thermal mixing tests with DVI in the other test model. Row visualization tests with DVI have clarified the physical interaction between DVI fluid and primary coolant during transient cooldown. A significant temperature drop was observed in the downcomer during the tests of a small break LOCA Measured transient temperature profiles agree well with the predictions by the REMIX code for a small break LOCA and with the calculations by the COMMIX-1B code for a steam line break event.

  • The experimental study on the shape and behavior of bubbles in U-tube deep shaft of 32m has been performed. According to the results in this paper, the equivalent spherical diameter of bubbles was 0.422-0.722cm and the shape of bubbles was almost ellipsoidal for bubbles to be generated ta single-orifice of diameter 0.06cm in the downcomer of the deep shaft system. Gas hold-up and gas-liquid contact area of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth, Also downcomer velocity of bubbles was slower than circulation velocity of liquid and riser velocity of bubbles was fast than circulation velocity. The bubble-size-distribution of bubbles in the deep shaft was the logarithmic probability distribution. The number of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth and the number of bubbles in the downcomer is more than the bubbles in the riser.

  • An improved version of RELAP5/MOD2 Cycle 36.04 code is assessed for LOFI LBLOCA Test L2-5. Minor modifications to the original version have been done to avoic reflood related errors. Based on the modified version, one base case and two cases for sensitivity study on downcomer and core channel modelling are calculated. The calculation results are compared with the experimental data for primary system pressure, break mass How rate and cladding temperature at hot spot According to the comparison, it is found that the hydraulic system behaviors are well predicted, excessive core cooling exist in blowdown phase for a single core channel and a combined downcomer case, and a better result can be obtained for a two core channel case.
