  • This paper deals with the control strategy for constant voltage, constant frequency (CVCF) generation of doubly-fed Induction generator. As induction machine is a nonlinear and multivariable machine, so, the influential factors for CVCF generation of induction generator are the magnitude of output voltage, load current and its power factor, slip of the machine, etc. To get appropriate control scheme and to research the effect of its parameters, the control equation of induction machine is derived and tested. The derived condition is very useful for the CVCF control of the machine and for determing the characteristics of the system. The simulation results show that magnetizing reactance and rotor resistance is a very important parameter in this control system.

  • Controller for doubly-fed induction-type wind generation system should be designed with mechanical power on blade. The controller in this paper consists of upper level controller and lower level controller. The upper level controller determines operating modes according to mechanical input power and calculates proper reference values. There are 4 operating modes - minimum speed control, variable torque control, torque limit control and idle mode. The lower level controller performs current regulated PWM control of rotor-side converter and grid-side inverter. A wind turbine simulator is implemented using doubly-fed induction-type generator and DSP based back-to-back converter to verify the performance of designed controller experimentally.

  • This paper analyzes the steady-state operating characteristics of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) and fixed-speed induction generator(FSIG) in wind turbine system. It also presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system for dynamics analysis on MATLAB/Simulink, and compares the responses between DFIG and FSIG wind turbine systems with respect to wind speed variation, 3-phase fault and 1-phase ground fault of the network. Simulation results show the variations of generator's active/reactive output, rotor speed, terminal voltage, fault current, etc. Case studies demonstrate that DFIG illustrates better performance compared to FSIG.

  • An application of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), which is one of adjustable speed generators, to a gas engine cogeneration system has been investigated. To operate during a blackout as an emergency power supply is one of important roles for the gas engine cogeneration system. However, the DFIG requires initial excitation for startup during a blackout because the DFIG has no excitation source. In this paper, we propose the "blackout start" as a new excitation method to generate a rated voltage at the primary side during a blackout. In addition, a stand-alone operation following a blackout has been investigated by using experimental setup with a real gas engine. Power flows in the generating set with the DFIG at the stand-alone operation have been investigated experimentally. Experimental investigation of the power flow suggests that the generating set with DFIG has optimal speed in minimizing whole system losses.

  • We have developed electrical power train for 1MW tidal current plant which is composed of both 500kW tidal current plant with doubly-fed induction generator and 500kW tidal current plant with synchronous generator. To check performances of the protype, 2MW dynamometer is used to simulate a helical turbine, and then protype generator and converter are coupled with the dynamometer separately. From the suggested experimental results it is reconfirmed that two kinds of the power train to be installed at the Uldolmok located at southwestern shore in Korea are able to operate under all kinds of the condition about speed and power.

  • This paper presents a design approach for wind power generator. Among several different generator systems, doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) is selected for Hyosung 2MW wind turbine system from the view of cost and weight. The time step finite element method is applied to analyze the performance of DFIG, and design of experiment(DOE) is used as an optimization method.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic analysis of doubly-fed induction generators for wind power system. The 3-phase voltage equations for stator and rotor of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) are derived and then, the equivalent circuit and mechanical output power of induction generators are obtained by converting the 3-phase voltage into do voltage equation. Finally, the dynamic characteristics such as torque, speed and voltage for rotor of DFIG are presented, for the case when wind is considered.

  • Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with the speed and power control using the Grid connected DFIG in the super-synchronous speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. For the speed control analysis, torque simulation is performed whereby the different slip between operating motor driving frequency and synchronous frequency of M-G system applied. To keep the output rating of the generator, the exciting frequency and voltage attenuation are applied.
