  • This study concerns the vibrational behavior of multi-walled nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes using the finite element method. The beam elements are used to model the carbon-carbon and silicon-carbon bonds. Besides, spring elements are employed to simulate the van der Waals interactions between walls. The effects of nanotube arrangement, number of walls, geometrical parameters and boundary conditions on the frequencies of nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes are investigated. It is shown that the double-walled nanotubes have larger frequencies than triple-walled nanotubes. Besides, replacing silicon carbide layers with carbon layers leads to increasing the frequencies of nested silicon-carbide and carbon nanotubes. Comparing the first ten mode shapes of nested nanotubes, it is observed that the mode shapes of armchair and zigzag nanotubes are almost the same.

  • The gigahertz oscillator behavior of double-walled boron-nitride nanotube (BNNT) was investigated by using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The BNNT oscillator characteristics were compared to carbon-nanotube (CNT) and hybrid-C@BNNT oscillators. The results show that the BNNT oscillators are higher than the van der Waals force of the CNT oscillator. Since the frictional effects of BNNT oscillators are higher than that of a CNT oscillator, the damping factors of BNNT and hybrid oscillators are higher than that of a CNT oscillator.

  • Several actuation mechanism for carton nanotubes has teen reported recently, including actuation by double-layer charge injection and ac voltages applyied to multiple electrodes. Carbon nanotube actuator based on double layer charge injection work well in electrolyte at low voltage. AC dielectrophoresis based on four electrode geometry demonstrated carton nanotubes in solution phase can be oriently manipulated by dielectrophoresis. From this point of view, and in regard to their performance, bucky paper actuator may alternate natural muscle. also, applied AC signal with appropriate magnitude and frequency together with four electrode arrangement has potential to realize nanotube electrokinetics.

  • The thermal buckling properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are studied using nonlocal Timoshenko beam model, including the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The DWCNTs are considered as two nanotube shells coupled through the van der Waals interaction between them. The geometric nonlinearity is taken into account, which arises from the mid-plane stretching. Considering the small-scale effects, the governing equilibrium equations are derived and the critical buckling temperatures under uniform temperature rise are obtained. The results show that the critical buckling temperature can be overestimated by the local beam model if the nonlocal effect is overlooked for long nanotubes. In addition, the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia on the buckling temperature is more obvious for the higher-order modes. The investigation of the thermal buckling properties of DWCNTs may be used as a useful reference for the application and the design of nanostructures in which DWCNTs act as basic elements.

  • We studied on the field emission properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) coated with lead selenide (PbSe) nanoparticles. PbSe nanoparticles were uniformly attached on the surface of the DWCNTs by a simple chemical process. The PbSe-coated DWCNTs showed highly increased emission current density and enhanced emission stability over 20 h, compared with raw DWCNTs. We consider that the enhanced field emission properties of PbSe-coated DWCNTs were attributed to the increased field enhancement factor and lowered work function of the emitters.

  • Dynamic behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an electric field is directly observed by in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CNT field emitters examined by in-situ TEM are multiwalled, double-walled and single walled CNTs. Threshold fields for electron emission and sustainable emission currents depending on the structure of CNTs are presented, and degradation mechanism of the CNT field emitters is discussed. In addition to the microscopy studies on individual CNTs, our recent development in surface treatment of CNT layers grown by chemical vapor deposition, which brings about high density of emission current and high uniformity, is also presented.

  • The unique effects of highly conductive conducting polymer/SWNT (single walled carbon nanotube) composite nanoparticles in electric double layer capacitors are studied for the enhancement of the adhesive properties, specific capacitance and power characteristics of the electrode. Because the conducting polymer/SWNT composite material, which is believed to act as a polymer binder, an active material for charge storage and a conducting agent, is well distributed on the activated carbon, greatly enhanced adhesion properties, cell capacitance and power characteristics were obtained.
