  • Heloniopsis koreana and Heloniopsis tubiflora (Melanthiaceae) are endemic herbaceous species of the Korean Peninsula. The Melanthiaceae family has been described as having seeds with small, underdeveloped embryos at the time of dispersal, and morphological (MD) or morphophysiological dormancy (MPD). However, there are few reports on embryo growth, morphology, and seed germination in Heloniopsis species. The aims of this study were to investigate embryo growth and seed dormancy, and to determine the type of dormancy exhibited by these species. The effects of incubation temperatures, light conditions, and gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) on dormancy break and seed germination were tested. Freshly matured seeds of the two species had small embryos that occupied about 9-11% of the length of the endosperm, and which increased by more than 300% in length before radicle emergence, indicating that the embryos are underdeveloped at the time of dispersal. Embryos in the seeds grew under warm temperature regimes (between $25/15^{\circ}C$ and $30/20^{\circ}C$). $GA_3$ application (tested only in the light) overcame seed dormancy and promoted germination. Approximately 30% of the seeds of H. koreana and approximately 40% of the seeds of H. tubiflora germinated in suitable environmental conditions (light and temperature) within 4 weeks. Therefore, 30-40% of the seeds of the two species exhibited MD, and the rest of the seeds had non-deep simple MPD. Light was found to be one of the critical factors for germination because no seed of either of the two Heloniopsis species germinated under constant dark conditions, and thus, these species have the potential to form a persistent soil seed bank. Understanding these germination requirements will help in development of effective strategies to increase the establishment of seedlings in their native habitat.

  • Employing the Numata-type life form, the paper analyzed changes of plants for 4 years at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake since its creation. The number of the species planted at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake, which was completed in December 2002, were 15 in total including, 10 families, 13 genera, 12 species and 3 varieties. As for the three-featured life forms of the planted species, there were 6 perennial hydatophytes, recording the biggest number of species in dormancy form; species each of $R_5$, $R_3$, $R_{2-3}$ respectively in radicoid from; 20 species of geomantic dissenminule form ($D_1$) in disseminule form and erecred type(e) existed the most in growth form. With regard to the 3 features of life form identified during the final year of the monitoring that lasted 5 years after the completion of the Wetlands, the number of species and individuals was found to have increased but there was no significant change of tendency as against the composition ration(%) of life form. There were 43 species of therophytes (Th) that covered 24.29% in dormancy form, while $R_5$ was prevalent in radicoid form and $D_4$, $D_1$, and $D_{1,4}$ comprosed 77.39% of the whole disseminule form. Growth form was surveyed in the order of erected type (e), bunch type (t), temporal rosette type (pr), branch type (b) and straight rosette type (ps) and these species comprised 64.97% of the whole flora. Consequently, in case of the artificial wetlands along the Boknaecheon of Juam Lake, it turned out that the vegetation type in which pioneer species of succession, or gradually stabilized perennial vegetation favoring Wetlands because the higher dormancy form has its perennial plants' composition ratio getting, the more its succession is progressing. Even though single grained plants ($R_5$) belonging to radicoid in breeding form, succession is predicted to take place considering the fact that they actually belong to ~ plants like Phragmites japonica that form a connection on the surface of the earth. In addition, it is judged that geomantic disseminule form ($D_1$) conveyed by water and gravitational disseminule form favored by the development of waterside woody plants ($D_4$) seem to be better fit to this area in desseminule form. As for growth form, bunch type (t) is judged to become prevalent on the Wetlands while a good variety of phanerophytes will coexist on the earth due to artificial as well as natural disturbances.

  • Picea abies plantation in Mt. Eifel, Germany was studied phytosociologically, with special reference to species composition, structure, ecology and dormancy form, comparing to those of Fagus sylvastica population that once dominated the P. abies plantation. Thirteen plant species appeared on average. According to their ecological distribution, they were classified into three groups, F sylvastica forests, natural coniferous forests and bare-land after clear-cutting. In Luzulo-Fagetum population, Luzula luzuloides was the dominated species while in P. abies plantation was dominated by Avenella flesuosa. In assessment of herbaceous plants by indicator species of Ellenberg, increasing number of shade-intolerant species and acid-tolerant species occurred. In analysis of plant dormancy form, species of Chamaephytes, Phanerophytes and Hemikryptophytes increased, while that of Geophytes decreased. As a result, we found P. abies plantation unstable in ecological aspects.

  • The preliminary study for providing the relationship of the factors which are climate and the pteridophyta was carried out. Dormancy form and leaf phenology of the 321 taxa belonging to 27 families were analyzed. This survey shows life-form spectrum of Korean ferns. The results obtained from this study were as follows: Deciduous (d), Evergreen (e) and Summer-deciduous (sd) were calculated as 37.4%, 59.2%, 1.9%, respectively and the Evergreen (e) has the highest value compared to the other leaf phenologies. It observed from the life-form spectra that Hemicryptophytes (H) was the most common dormancy form at 42.1%. Geophytes (G), Epiphytes (E) and Chamaephytes (Ch) were calculated at 25.5%, 15.9%, and 11.8%, respectively. There will be a discussion about geographical distribution of Korean ferns and possibility of their distribution range.

  • The phase and times on the development of dormancy bud in seedling, and those of flower organs in 2-year-old ginseng are different to those of over 2-,3-year-old plant, respectively. The growing aspects of dormancy bud in seedling were investigated from rooting stage (April, 8) to Mid-June, and those of flower organs in 2-year-old plant had done once in two days late in April after compound leaves were unfolded. Firstly, the formation of dormancy bud in seedling was begun on Mid-late in March. This is early about one month compare with those of over 2-year-old plant. Fine bud in seedling was formed between cotyledons, at W spot under young shoot. Secondly, development of flower organs in 2-year-old plant was completed from late of April to early of May after compound leaves of transplanted plant were unfolded. In tare, this is very different characteristics because plants of any other ages form the flower organs one year ago. Thirdly, flower organs of ginseng plant, over 3-year-old plant, always develop in the rhizome formed one year ago, but those of 2-year-old plant develop in apical shoot meristem.

  • According to previous research on evaluating vegetative value of wetland and RAM evaluation targeting the man-made wetland in Gunsan, Gunsan Reservoir and Gongchang Reservoir had been found to have satisfactory results while Anjeong Reservoir and Changan Reservoir had been found to have unsatisfactory results. Aimed at those reservoirs, a vegetation survey was conducted to analyze differences in terms of flora and growth habit. As for the flora, Gunsan Reservoir ranked first with 433 kinds of plants, followed by Gongchang Reservoir with 306, Changan Reservoir with 176 and Anjeong Reservoir with 167. As for specific plant species by floristic region, it was identified that Gunsan Reservoir had 18 species, larger than other wetlands and also, it had more species of naturalized plants than others. This phenomenon is related to various wetland environments resulted from wider area of Gunsan Reservoir. In the case of dormancy form, hemicryptophytes were mainly distributed in Gunsan Reservoir and Gongchang Reservoir while annual plants were mainly distributed in Anjeong Reservoir and Changan Reservoir with heavy disturbance.
