  • One of the ever-increasing demands on the performances of heterodyne interferometers is to improve the measurement resolution, of which current state -of-the-art reaches the region of sub-nanometers. So far, the demand has been met by increasing the clock speed that drives the electronics involved fur the phase measurement of the Doppler shift, but its further advance is being hampered by the technological limit of modem electronics. To cope with the problem, in this investigation, we propose a new scheme of phase -measuring electronics that reduces the measurement resolution without further increase in clock speed. Our scheme adopts a super-heterodyne technique that lowers the original beat frequency to a level of 1 MHz by mixing it with a stable reference signal generated from a special phase- locked-loop. The technique enables us to measure the phase of Doppler shift with a resolution of 1.58 nanometer at a sampling rate of 1 MHz. To avoid the undesirable decrease in the maximum measurable speed caused by the lowered beat frequency, a special form of frequency up-down counting technique is combined with the super-heterodyning. This allows performing required phase unwrapping simply by using programmable digital gates without 2n ambiguities up to the maximum velocity guaranteed by the original beat frequency.

  • The dynamic response of the head arm assembly (HAA) of a hard disk drive to an impact load was obtained from a 3D non-linear finite element model using ANSYS/LS-DYNA and from experiments using a modified levitation mass method (LMM). In the finite element model, the impact load was created by modeling the mass as a rigid body and making it collide with the HAA. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were then obtained from the time history data of the finite element analysis. In the LMM, a mass that was levitated with an aerostatic linear bearing, and hence encountered negligible friction, was made to collide with the actuator arm, resulting in a dynamic bending test for the arm. During the collision, the Doppler frequency shift of the laser beam reflected from the mass was accurately measured with an optical interferometer. The velocity, displacement, acceleration, and inertial force of the mass were accurately calculated from the measured time-varying Doppler frequency shift. A good correlation between the experimental data and FEA results was observed. The FEA was also used to investigate the dynamic response of the HAA to impact by different masses.

  • The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique and the single carrier with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) scheme are very attractive solutions for wireless applications, being computationally efficient since equalization is performed in the frequency domain. The equalizer could not entirely handle significant mean. Doppler shift. This motivates the use of a phase error tracking loop that operates jointly with the frequency equalizer. This paper describes the effect of the mean phase error and the performance of the proportional equalizer coupled with a phase error tracking loop based on decision-directed method. Furthermore, simulation results show that we can reduce the computational toad of the tracking loop with minimal performance degradation.

  • The feedback interference channels are those made through the multipaths that are built by moving and stationary objects around transmit and receive antennas mounted at the same point. This paper describes the method to measure the feedback interference channels in the rural regions and sides of highways and the analysis on channel characteristic parameters. Using the measured samples, we estimated scattering functions, delay power spectra, and Doppler power spectra, and we analyzed the channels using eight parameters including coherence bandwidth, coherence time, maximum excess delay, average excess delay, rms delay spread, Doppler shift, Doppler spread, and spread factor, and delay and Doppler cumulative distributions. Even though many observations are made, note that the feedback signals of high Doppler frequencies and large energy are observed in the sides of highways due to high speed vehicles while low Doppler frequencies occurred in the rural region due to rare traffic.

  • This paper presents an underwater acoustic communication with nonlinear chirp modulation. The information is carried by the carrier amplitude, frequency or phase in the most common underwater acoustic communications. However, the proposed method includes the information within frequency variation of carrier wave for a symbol. Especially, as carrier wave the hyperbolic frequency modulated signal, one of the nonlinear chirp signal, is used and it is robust in the Doppler channel. The proposed method was analyzed and compared to conventional method by simulation. When the doppler shift existed, the error probability of the proposed method is reduced by 5~12 % than conventional method with linear frequency modulated signal. Sea trial was performed to analyze the performance of the proposed method.

  • Moving terminals like high-speed-train undergo high Doppler frequency shift, and this leads to carrier frequency offsets that have to be compensated to avoid degradation of communication performance. In multiple access mechanism like OFDMA, base-stations need complex hardware to compensate the uplink frequency offset. In this paper, we propose a method, which can reduce burden of the base-station and makes frequency offset estimation and compensation simple. This method contains transmitting new synchronization signal, estimating frequency offsets in base-station, transmitting feedback information to terminal, and compensating the offset in uplink transmission. Simulation results show the proposed method operates well in high Doppler frequency shift conditions of 500 km/h which is the requirements of 5G mobile communication.

  • Here we report the results from spectroscopic observations of soloar active regions in the HeI 10830 ${\AA}$ line at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope(VTT) in Tenerife during the August 199:3 International EFR(Emerging Flux Region) Campaign. Four active regions in various stages of their evolution, i.e., NOAA7558, 7560, 7561, and 7562, were ovserved on 10 August 1993. From the observed HeI 10830 ${\AA}$ spectra in these active regions, spectroscopic quantities such as equivalent width(EW), doppler shift, doppler width, etc., were derived(see Figure l(a)) and the correlation between them were studied(see Figure l(b)). Our main results are as follows: (I)In NOAA7562, which is a young and evolving EFR, the EW is large, while it is small around a simple and roundish spot of NOAA7558. (2)In these active regions, redshift in the 10830 line is dominant when the EW is larger. (3)As the doppler width increases, the line tends to shift redward. (4)When the EW is smaller, it seems to exist another component which have dynamic characteristics different from the redshifting component. In NOAA7560 and NOAA7561, regions which have several small spots, the values of the EW are intermediate. Results (2) and (3) may suggest the possible existence of downflow above active regions, if the HeI 10830 ${\AA}$line is formed in the upper chromopshere, and it is consistent with the earlyer result from the SMM extreme-ultraviolet observation by Klimchuk(1987, Astrophys. J., 323, 368) (to be submitted. to Astronomy and Astrophysics; an extended abstract)

  • In the paper we validate theoretical models of the pulse against experimental data from the Jozef Stefan Institute TRIGA Mark II research reactor. Data from all pulse experiments since 1991 have been collected, analysed and are publicly available. This paper summarizes the validation study, which is focused on the comparison between experimental values, theoretical predictions (Fuchs-Hansen and Nordheim-Fuchs models) and calculation using computational program Improved Pulse Model. The results show that the theoretical models predicts higher maximum power but lower total released energy, full width at half maximum and the time when the maximum power is reached is shorter, compared to Improved Pulse Model. We evaluate the uncertainties in pulse physical parameters (maximum power, total released energy and full width at half maximum) due to uncertainties in reactor physical parameters (inserted reactivity, delayed neutron fraction, prompt neutron lifetime and effective temperature reactivity coefficient of fuel). It is found that taking into account overestimated correlation of reactor physical parameters does not significantly affect the estimated uncertainties of pulse physical parameters. The relative uncertainties of pulse physical parameters decrease with increasing inserted reactivity. If all reactor physical parameters feature an uncorrelated uncertainty of 10 % the estimated total uncertainty in peak pulse power at 3 $ inserted reactivity is 59 %, where significant contributions come from uncertainties in prompt neutron lifetime and effective temperature reactivity coefficient of fuel. In addition we analyse contribution of two physical mechanisms (Doppler broadening of resonances and neutron spectrum shift) that contribute to the temperature reactivity coefficient of fuel. The Doppler effect contributes around 30 %-15 % while the rest is due to the thermal spectrum hardening for a temperature range between 300 K and 800 K.

  • The properties of Fe-Se-Te system(FeSe(sub)1-xTe(sub)x, x=0.2, 0.5, 0.8) have been studied by means of the X-ray diffraction method and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns show that three samples have the ixed structure of tetragonal PbO and a small amount of hexagonal NiAs structure respectively. For x=0.5 the lattice parameters of tetragonal PbO structure are a=3.795$\AA$, c=5.896$\AA$ and c/a=1.55. The Mossbauer spectra were obtained with the various temperature variation and than they do not exhibit magnetic hyperfine structure but show a strong doublet. The values of observed isomer shift and quadrupole splitting suggest that the irons of all samples exist in the +2 oxidation state with a major covalent contribution. The temperature dependence of isomer shift values for x=0.8 seems to be originated from the second order Doppler effect.

  • In a conventional sonar system, which uses LFM signal for detecting targets with varying speed, the results of multiple LFM Doppler correlators are aligned and the maximum alined result are selected as a test cell for detecting targets. As the number of the LFM Doppler correlators are increased for accurate target detection, as the required computational complexity and the memory are also increased. This fact makes it difficult to implement the accurate LFM target detector. In this paper, we propose a new fast target detection which is robust for the variation of target speed. Because the proposed method uses the summation of alined results of large numbers of LFM Doppler correlators, the proposed method increase SNR and provide robust SNR for the variation of target speed. And the proposed method can provide very fast target detection by implementing the process, the summation of alined results of large numbers of LFM Doppler correlators, as one summation filter.
